Zirconia membrane was prepared in the sol-gel process by filtering viscous colloidal zirconia sol through microporous alumina support and gelling followed by sintering at 743 K. The scanning electron micrograph shows that mean pore size is 543 nm and pore density is 1.47 multiplied by 10**7/cm**2. The filtration characteristics during membrane layer formation show that the membrane layer formation starts after 40 min. The membrane layer thickness and the porosity of the membrane were determined gravimetrically by finding out the amount of water present in the pores. The membrane layer thickness was found to be 3 micron and the porosity was found out to be 0.38. The pore charge density was estimated from the particle charge density, pore density, pore diameter and the thickness of the membrane layer. (Edited author abstract) 5 Refs.

Broadleaf Weed Control in sunflower (<i>Helianthus annuus</i>) with Preemergence-Applied Pyroxasulfone with and without sulfentrazone

A field study was conducted at two locations in Kansas, UsA in 2011 and 2012 to test weed control efficacy and crop response to preemergence-applied pyroxasulfone alone and in combination with sulfentrazone in sunflower. Treatments included three rates of pyroxasulfone (100, 200 and 400 g·ha-1) applied alone and tank-mixed with sulfentrazone at 70, 140 and 280 g·ha-1. Commercial standards sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 + pendimethalin at 1390 g·ha-1 and sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 + s-metolachlor at 1280 g·ha-1 were also included. Pyroxasulfone at 100 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth 87% at 3 weeks after application (WAA), but control decreased to 76% at 6 WAA. Increasing pyroxasulfone rate to ≥200 g·ha-1 or tank mixing with sulfentazone at 140 g·ha-1 provided ≥90% Palmer amaranth control for at least 6 WAA. sulfentrazone alone at 70 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth 77% at 3 WAA, but control dropped to 69% at 6 WAA. Increasing sulfentrazone rate from 70 to 140 or 280 g·ha-1 increased control to >90% at 3 WAA, but did not maintain acceptable control at 6 WAA. Tank mixing sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 with pendimethalin at 1390 g·ha-1 or s-metolachlor at 1280 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth ≥90 and 84% at 3 WAA and 6 WAA, respectively. The lowest rate of pyroxasulfone (100 g·ha-1) controlled kochia 98% and the control was complete with all other treatments. However, no treatment provided as much as 90% puncturevine control at 3 WAA and the control was commercially unacceptable (sibly injured sunflower anytime during the season or reduced sunflower plant population.

Broadleaf Weed Control and Crop safety with Premixed Pyrasulfotole and Bromoxynil in Winter Wheat

For more than two decades acetolactate synthase (ALs) inhibiting herbicides have been the major weed control tools in winter wheat which resulted in selection of resistant weeds to those herbicides. Premix of pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil (Huskie?), a relatively new herbicide, was registered for use in wheat in 2008. Pyrasulfotole inhibits 4-hydoxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) enzyme in susceptible plants and is the first significant new mode of action for use in cereals for more than two decades. Field experiments were conducted from 2007 to 2010 at two locations in Kansas, UsA to test the efficacy of pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil for broadleaf weed control and crop safety in winter wheat. Treatments included pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone at 253 g·ai·ha-1 and tank mixtures of pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil at 207 g·ai·ha-1 with MCPA at 280 g·ai·ha-1, dicamba at 140 g·ai·ha-1 or metsulfuron-methyl at 4.2 g·ai·ha-1. Herbicides were applied postemergence in fall and spring seasons. Pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone or in combination with tank-mix partners, regardless of application time, controlled flixweed, blue mustard, bushy wallflower and field pennycress 98% or more. Henbit control was better when pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil treatments were applied in fall than spring (≥98% vs ≥67%). Pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone applied in spring was not effective on wild buckwheat, but tank mixing with dicamba or metsulfuron-methyl controlled it 84% or more. Pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil alone or as tank mixture caused little (≤7%) or no injury to wheat and the injury did not influence wheat grain yields. Based on excellent control of broadleaf weeds evaluated, pyrasulfotole & bromoxynil is an alternative tool to control ALs-inhibitor resistant weeds in winter wheat. Fall season application and tank mixing with other herbicides are desirable for effective and broad spectrum weed control.

A preliminary study conducted in the central UsA near Colby and Hays, Kansas (Ks) in 2010 indicated a premix of s-metolachlor & sulfentrazone codenamed F7583 (Broadaxe?) had good potential for use in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Additional studies were conducted in 2011 at Colby, Hays, Manhattan, Ks to refine rate and application timing of F7583 for weed control and crop safety. Four rates of F7583 (860, 1100, 1350 and 1840 g·ha-1) were compared to single rates of s-metolachlor and pendimethalin, and applied 21 days preplant versus preemergence (PRE). F7583 at ≥1100 g·ha-1 applied preplant or PRE controlled Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri s. Wats.) and kochia [Kochia scoparia (L.) schrad.] ≥95% and 100%, respectively in neutral pH soils. In slightly acidic soils, PRE application of F7583 was more effective against Palmer amaranth and grass weeds compared to preplant application. No benefit was gained by increasing the rate of F7583 from 1100 to 1350 g·ha-1 at either application timing. Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris L.) control was not commercially satisfactory with F7583 at any rate or time of application. Both s-metolachlor at 1070 g·ha-1 and pendimethalin at 1600 g·ha-1 applied either preplant or PRE were considerably less effective on all three broadleaf weeds compared to F7583 treatments. Individually, s-metolachlor and pendimethalin were more effective when applied PRE compared to preplant application. F7583 did not reduce sunflower plant population or visibly injure sunflower anytime during the season.

We explore the entanglement features of pure symmetric N-qubit states characterized by N-distinct spinors with a particular focus on the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and , an equal superposition of W and obverse W states. Along with a comparison of pairwise entanglement and monogamy properties, we explore the geometric information contained in them by constructing their canonical steering ellipsoids. We obtain the volume monogamy relations satisfied by states as a function of number of qubits and compare with the maximal monogamy property of GHZ states.

We investigated the emission properties of Eu3+-doped GdNbO4-based oxide phosphors,aiming at improving the Eu3+emission by codoping of Bi3+and Li+.Eu3+singly doped,Eu3+and Bi3+doubly doped,and Eu3+,Bi3+,and Li+triply doped GdNbO4were prepared using a high-temperature solid-state reaction *** red-orange emissions from Eu3+in the singly doped samples are significantly improved by the codoping of Bi3+,mainly due to the energy transfer from Bi3+to Eu3+.The additional codoping of Li+is found to increase the Eu3+emission *** improvement might be attributed to the increase in the photoluminescent quantum yield originating from larger grain sizes and better crystallinity.A detailed analysis of the X-ray diffraction pattern and the asymmetric ratio estimated from the photoluminescence spectra show that the local lattice environment around Eu3+in GdNbO4does not change significantly with the codoping of Bi3+and Li+.Our results indicate that Li+doping is a promising way to improve the emission properties of rare-earth ion-doped GdNbO4phosphors.
