Batesian mimicry is the process in which harmless species adopt the appearance of a dangerous, aposematic *** some prey species,both Batesian mimetic and non-Batesian morphs coexist,presupposing that both morphs have to be evolutionarily *** viperine snake, Natrix maura,exhibits a zigzag dorsal pattern and antipredatory behavior that mimics european *** snake also has a striped dorsal pattern that coexists with the zigzag *** have examined whether individuals belonging to different geographically structured clades were more likely to exhibit a certain dorsal pattern,and whether the zigzag pattern has a protective function by exposing artificial snakes to predation in natural environments,in addition to comparing antipredatory behavior between zigzag and striped snakes also in natural *** results indicate that the striped pattern was not geographically structured,but *** predators less frequently attacked zigzag plasticine models than striped or unpatterned *** detected a shift in antipredator behavior between the 2 morphs,as Batesian mimicking *** responded to an approaching potential predator by remaining immobile or fleeing at shorter distances than did striped *** conclude that Batesian mimics maintain the cryptic and aposematic value by resembling vipers,whereas in open habitats the non-Batesian mimic has altered its antipredator behavior to maintain its fitness.

气候条件影响了山地社区的社会经济发展,特别是易发生高山斜坡破坏和泥石流等自然灾害的山区,气候因素将发挥重要的影响作用,因此在制定适当的可持续发展方案时应考虑到气候因素。同时,气候变化改变了生态系统服务(eS)功能,使得土壤肥力下降、水资源供应减少、草地面积减少、监管服务(如防止自然灾害)和文化服务发生潜在转变。本研究以意大利阿尔卑斯山区为研究区域进行初步讨论,该地区经历过极端降水和侵蚀,社区的发展十分依赖于对自然资源的直接利用。初步研究结果表明,经济因素影响了诺瓦莱萨社区(位于意大利西北部的皮埃蒙特地区)过去的人口变化趋势。然而,由气象气候因素引发的岩崩和泥石流事件的数量不断增加,可能会进一步影响社区人们的生计。因此,环境监测和数据分析对于辨识景观和气候变化的趋势并选择适当的规划方案是很重要的,这有助于将山地社区人口维持在全球人口的10%左右,这也是贫困地区未来经济发展的一个重要机遇。

Protein Domains Involved in Assembly in the endoplasmic Reticulum Promote Vacuolar Delivery when Fused to Secretory GFP, Indicating a Protein Quality Control Pathway for Degradation in the Plant Vacuole

The correct folding and assembly of newly synthesized secretory proteins are monitored by the protein quality control system of the endoplasmic reticulum （eR）. Through interactions with chaperones such as the binding protein （BiP） and other folding helpers, quality control favors productive folding and sorts for degradation defective proteins. A major route for quality control degradation identified in yeast, plants, and animals is constituted by retrotranslocation from the eR to the cytosol and subsequent disposal by the ubiquitin/proteasome system, but alternative routes involving the vacuole have been identified in yeast. In this study, we have studied the destiny of sGFP418, a fusion between a secretory form of GFP and a domain of the vacuolar protein phaseolin that is involved in the correct assembly of phaseolin and in BiP recognition of unassembled subunits. We show that sGFP418, despite lacking the phaseolin vacuolar sorting signal, is delivered to the vacuole and fragmented, in a process that is inhibited by the secretory traffic inhibitor brefeldin A. Moreover, a fusion between GFP and a domain of the maize storage protein γ-zein involved in zein polymerization also undergoes post-translational fragmentation similar to that of sGFP418. These results show that defective secretory proteins with permanently exposed sequences normally involved in oligomerization can be delivered to the vacuole by secretory traffic. This strongly suggests the existence of a plant vacuolar sorting mechanism devoted to the disposal of defective secretory proteins.

Contralateral delayed endolymphatic hydrops: Clinical features and long term outcome

Background:Contralateral delayed endolymphatic hydrops(CDeH)is a clinical entity characterized by fluctuating low frequency hearing loss and/or vertigo,mimicking Meniere’s disease(MD),that manifests after the appearance of severe non-hydropic hearing loss(NHHL)at the other ***:to describe the clinical features and the course of 57 patients affected by ***:this is a retrospective study;57 patients affected by CDeH,out of 1065 patients seen in the same period and affected by MD,were subjected to otoscopy,PTA threshold evaluation,impedance testing,ABR,research of positioning nystagmus,vestibular function evaluated by means of bithermal caloric test under video-oculographic,and MRI with ***:the CDeH was definite in 24 cases(42%),probable in 2(4%)and possible in 31(54%).The mean PTA threshold at the hydropic ear was 41 *** the last follow-up,40 patients(70%)did not report vertigo or fluctuating hearing *** the 17 patients who still reported symptomatology,11(64%)were affected by fluctuating hearing loss alone,4(23%)reported a subjective worsening of hearing loss and 2(12%)an acute vertigo ***:contralateral delayed endolymphatic hydrops is a relatively rare form of Meniere disease that manifests more frequently as a definite form or with fluctuating low-frequency hearing *** prognosis at a long term follow-up is relatively good in terms of vertigo *** delayed endolymphatic hydrops rarely determines a severe hearing loss in the better ear.

I dati emersi permettono di ordinate i laghi secondolivelli di trofia crescente nella seguente maniera: Garda eo ≈ Moro emical research in the lakes Garda, Iseo, Idro and Moro (Brescia). Resultsof a research about the lakes Garda, Iseo, Idro and Moro carried out from October 1988 to April 1990with four campaigns of survey, are synthetically described. During this period deep mixing of waterswas never observed and the meromittic state of lakes Idro and Moro was confirmed. The data so farcollected allow to list these lakes as follows, according to their levels of increasing trophic condition:Garda eo ≈ Moro < Idro.

Axisymmmetric empty Space: Light Propagation, Orbits and dark Matter

This study presents an axisymmetric solution of the einstein equations for empty space. The geometry is studied by determining its Petrov classification and killing vectors. Light propagation, orbital motion and asymptotic and Newtonian limits are also studied. Additionally, cosmological applications of the geometry are also outlined as an alternative model for the inflationary universe and as a substitute for dark matter and quintessence.

AIM To investigate the type and timing of evolution of incidentally found branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(bd-IPMN) of the pancreas addressed to magnetic resonance imaging cholangiopancreatography(MRCP) *** We retrospectively evaluated 72 patients who underwent, over the period 2006-2016, a total of 318 MRCPs(mean 4.4) to follow-up incidental, presumed bdIPMN without signs of malignancy, found or confirmedat a baseline MRCP examination. Median follow-up time was 48.5 mo(range 13-95 mo). MRCPs were acquired on 1.5T and/or 3.0T systems using 2D and/or 3D technique. Image analysis assessed the rates of occurrence over the follow-up of the following outcomes:(1) imaging evolution, defined as any change in cysts number and/or size and/or appearance; and(2) alert findings, defined as worrisome features and/or high risk stigmata(e.g., thick septa, parietal thickening, mural nodules and involvement of the main pancreatic duct). Time to outcomes was described with the Kaplan-Meir approach. Cox regression model was used to investigate clinical or initial MRCP findings predicting cysts *** We found a total of 343 cysts(per-patient mean 5.1) with average size of 8.5 mm(range 5-25 mm). Imaging evolution was observed in 32/72 patients(44.4%; 95%CI: 32-9-56.6), involving 47/343 cysts(13.7%). There was a main trend towards small(ease and/or decrease of cysts size at a median time of 22.5 mo. Alert findings developed in 6/72 patients(8.3%; 95%CI: 3.4-17.9) over a wide interval of time(13-63 mo). No malignancy was found on endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration(5/6 cases) or surgery(1/6 cases). No clinical or initial MRCP features were significantly associated with changes in bd-IPMN appearance(P > 0.01).CONCLUSION Changes in MRCP appearance of incidental bd-IPNM were frequent over the follow-up(44.4%), with relatively rare(8.3%) occurrence of non-malignant alert findings that prompted further diagnostic steps. Sub-10nm nanogap fabrication on suspended glassy carbon nanofibers

Glassy carbon nanofibers(GCNFs)are considered promising candidates for the fabrication of nanosensors for biosensing ***,in part due to their great stability,carbon electrodes with sub-10 nm nanogaps represent an attractive platform for probing the electrical characteristics of *** fabrication of sub-10 nm nanogap electrodes in these GCNFs,which is achieved by electrically stimulating the fibers until they break,was previously found to require fibers shorter than 2µm;however,this process is generally hampered by the limitations inherent to photolithographic *** this work,to obtain nanogaps on the order of 10 nm without the need for sub-2µm GCNFs,we employed a fabrication strategy in which the fibers were gradually thinned down by continuously monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of the fiber and adjusting the applied voltage *** further reduce the nanogap size,we studied the mechanism behind the thinning and eventual breakdown of the suspended GCNFs by controlling the environmental conditions and pressure during the *** this approach,which includes performing the experiments in a high-vacuum chamber after a series of carbon dioxide(CO 2)purging cycles,nanogaps on the order of 10nm were produced in suspended GCNFs 52µm in length,much longer than the~2µm GCNFs needed to produce such small gaps without the procedure employed in this ***,the electrodes showed no apparent change in their shape or nanogap width after being stored at room temperature for approximately 6 months.

Microsurgical tunica albuginea transplantation in an animal model

Several andrological diseases require surgical repair or reconstruction of tunica albuginea, which envelops the corpora cavernosa penis. Despite intense research efforts involving a variety of biological materials, such as skin, muscle aponeurosis, human dura mater, tunica vaginalis, and pericardium, engineered tunica albuginea suitable for graft use is yet to be obtained. The study investigates microsurgical tunica albuginea allotransplantation in an animal model with the purpose of creation of an organ-specific tissue bank to store penile tissue, from cadaveric donors and male-to-female trans-sexual surgery, for allogeneic transplantation. Materials were tunica albuginea tissue explanted from 15 donor rats, cryopreserved at -80~C, gamma-irradiated, and implanted in 15 recipient rats, of which three rats were used as controls. Penile grafts were explanted at different time intervals; after macroscopic evaluation of the organ, the grafts were processed to morphological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical examinations by light microscopy. Detection of pro-inflammatory cytokines was also performed. examination of the tunica albuginea allografts collected 1, 3, or 6 months after surgery and of control tunica albuginea fragments showed that tunica albuginea implants achieved biointegration with adjacent tissue at all-time points. The integration of cryopreserved rat tunica albuginea allografts, documented by our study, encourages the exploration of tunica albuginea allotransplantation in humans. In conclusion, the effectiveness and reliability of the tunica albuginea conditioning protocol described here suggest the feasibility of setting up a tunica albuginea bank as a further tissue bank.
