The use of natural lignocellulosic fibers(NLFs)as a reinforcement mechanism for cementitious composites,such as mortar,has been investigated in the last ***,their application has often been restricted to technological evaluation research.A NLF with great potential the curaua,which after treatment with NaOH solution,proved to be technologically feasible for mortars reinforcement based on cement and *** objective of this research was the comparative evaluation between a traditional mortar,based on cement and lime,with 1:1:6:0.8 ratio of cement:lime:sand:water,and a modified mortar with addition of 2 wt.%treated curaua fiber in cement mass by evaluating environmental and durability *** a curing time for 28 days,environmental assessments were carried out and durability methodologies were *** tests performed were:(i)attack by chlorides and sulfate,(ii)the wetting and drying cycles,and(iii)slake durability *** results showed that the mortar with the addition of curaua fiber presented a similar behavior to the reference mixture,both in terms of environmental and durability *** modified mortar is able to be used in internal and external environments,the latter with some ***,it also contributes to the promotion of sustainable use of curaua fiber.

This research aimed to evaluate the efficiency of eucalyptus(e)and bamboo(B)residual biomass biochars as filter materials for drinking water *** efficiencies of these two biochars in the rapid filtration process were evaluated using water(raw,flocculated and settled)at the rate of 120 m^(3)/m^(2)/*** that bamboo biochar manufactured under a slow pyrolysis process"b"(Bb)had the best ***,Bb was evaluated with three different granulometries,and it was found that the effective size with the best performance was the finest(0.6-1.18 mm).Subsequently,this biochar was compared with conventional filter materials such as gravel,sand and anthracite,using different types of water(raw,flocculated and settled)and at different filtration rates(120 and 240 m^(3)/m^(2)/d),and it was found that the filter material with the best performance was precisely biochar,with average removal efficiencies of 64.37%turbidity and 45.08%colour for raw water;93.9%turbidity and 90.75%colour for flocculated water,and 80.79%turbidity and 69.03%colour for settled *** efficiency using simple beds of sand,biochar,anthracite and gravel at the rate of 180 m^(3)/m^(2)/d was 75.9%copper,90.72%aluminium,95.7%iron,10.9%nitrates,94.3%total coliforms and 88.9%fecal *** efficiencies achieved by biochar were higher compared to those of conventional filter *** was also found that biochar contributes to improving the performance of sand and anthracite in mixed ***,it was possible to demonstrate that the volume of washing water required for the biochar is lower compared to the other filter ***,it is recommended to carry out more tests for the purification of water with biochars from rural areas affected by the mining and oil exploitation,as well as the purification of seawater with biochars from coastal areas with residues from dry forests and organic residues from municipalities.

Meningococcal disease is the acute infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, which has humans as the only natural host. The disease is widespread around the globe and is known for its epidemical potential and high rates of lethality and morbidity. The highest number of cases of the disease is registered in the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In Brazil, it is endemic with occasional outbreaks, epidemics and sporadic cases occurring throughout the year, especially in the winter. The major epidemics of the disease occurred in Brazil in the 70's caused by serogroups A and C. Serogroups B, C and Y represent the majority of cases in europe, the Americas and Australia. However, there has been a growing increase in serogroup W in some areas. The pathogen transmission happens for respiratory route(droplets) and clinically can lead to meningitis and sepsis(meningococcemia). The treatment is made with antimicrobial and supportive care. For successful prevention, we have some measures like vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and droplets' precautions. In this review, we have described and clarify clinical features of the disease caused by N. meningitidis regarding its relevance for healthcare professionals.

Functional traits shape size-dependent growth and mortality rates of dry forest tree species

Aims Functional traits have emerged as an important tool to evaluate plant ***,the environmental conditions and ecological pressures that plants face change with their size,and the relationship between traits and plant performance should therefore be size-dependent,which has rarely been *** Here,we evaluated over a broad range of tree sizes the interspe-cific relationship between tree growth and mortality and eight func-tional stem,leaf and seed *** did so across 59 tree species in Brazilian dry forests and evaluated whether the relationships found for wet forest types in the literature also hold for dry forests,where water rather than light might limit tree *** Findings We indeed found a strong size-dependent relationship between demographic rates and functional *** small sizes,when trees are in the shaded understory,species with functional trait values that enhance light capture or shade tolerance(*** maximum adult stature,taller heights,wider crowns,higher seed mass)have higher growth and/or lower mortality rates(MR).This relationship disappears at larger sizes when trees attain better light conditions in the *** adaptations play only a role at larger tree sizes;once trees are in the dry and exposed canopy,species with higher wood density(an indicator of cavitation resistance)have lower *** study shows that both drought and shade adaptations are important in this dry forest,and that the relationships between func-tional traits and plant performance changes with plant *** size should therefore explicitly be included as an axis of variation in functional analyses,to better understand the relationship between functional traits and demographic rates.

Advanced characterization for industrial catalysis applications

The interplay between analytical technique and industrial practice has been central in the development of catalytic materials for processing petroleum. This article presents reviews of key aspects of two of the most important classes of catalytic materials: noble-metal Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on alumina, which are the basis of catalytic reforming;and layered sulfides of Mo and W, which catalyze hydrogenation and hetero-atom removal in hydroprocessing. The state of understanding of Pt cluster growth and resulting structures, as developed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and STeM, is reviewed. Influences of both Pt reduction temperature in hydrogen gas, and oxidizing pretreatment conditions prior to Pt reduction, are considered. Recent work by the present authors on Pt NP structure evolution is presented in the context of the previous work. A review is subsequently presented of layered sulfide based NPs, summarizing contributions from a range of analytical techniques. Work on active site structures of sulfide NPs is reviewed, focusing particularly on the critical interactions of active edge sites with sulfur and hydrogen in chemisorption, physisorption, and spillover interactions. New temperature programmed reduction (TPR) results are presented for supported and unsupported sulfide NPs. Structural changes in TPR of alumina-supported MoS2 are investigated using extended X-ray absorption fine structure and density functional theory modeling, and are determined to arise from removal of identifiable edge-site sulfur species.

Lignin is a cheap, abundant and non-toxic group of complex phenolic polymers obtained in large amounts from the papermaking and cellulosic biofuel industries. Although the application of lignin has been ex- plored in these and several more industries, there are limited applications of lignin in the energy industry. However, numerous research revealed a great interest in the exploration of this renewable biopolymer in storage energy devices. Some of these applications include the use of lignin as an expander for lead-acid batteries, electrodes for primary and rechargeable batteries, electrodes for electronic double layer capac- itors and electrochemical pseudocapacitors, and to feed different types of fuel cells. The use of lignin in energy storage devices improves not only the performance of these devices but also decreases the price and toxicity, contributing to obtaining greener energy devices. Based on the above, this review provides an overview of the main research work related to the use of lignin as a renewable component, suitable to replace some synthetic and toxic compounds used in the fabrication of energy storage devices with particular emphasis on batteries, advanced supercapacitors, and solar and fuel cells.

Sufficient conditions for the wavelet system to constitute a frame for L 2(R n ) are given. For a class of functions g∈L 22(R n ) we prove that certain growth conditions on {λ j } will frames, and that some other types of sequences exclude the frame property. We also give a sufficient condition for a Gabor system $\left\{ {e^{zrib\left( {j,x} \right)} g\left( {x - \lambda _k } \right)} \right\}_{j\varepsilon z^n ,k\varepsilon z} $ to be a frame.

early graft dysfunction following adult-to-adult livingrelated liver transplantation:Predictive factors and outcomes

AIM:To describe a condition that we define as early graft dysfunction(eGD)which can be identified preoperatively. MeTHODS:Small-for-size graft dysfunction following living-related liver transplantation(LRLT)is characterized by eGD when the graft-to-recipient body weight ratio(GRBWR)is below 0.8%.However, patients transplanted with GRBWR above 0.8%can develop dysfunction of the *** 73 recipients of LRLT(GRBWR>0.8%),we identified 10 patients who developed *** main measures of outcomes analyzed were overall mortality,number of re-transplants and length of stay in days(LOS).Furthermore we analyzed other clinical pre-transplant variables,intraoperative parameters and post transplant ***:A trend in favor of the non-eGD group(3-mo actuarial survival 98%vs 88%,P=0.09;3-mo graft mortality 4.7%vs 20%,P=0.07)was observed as well as shorter LOS(13 d vs 41.5 d;P=0.001)and smaller requirement of peri-operative Units of Plasma (4 vs 14;P=0.036).Univariate analysis of pre- transplant variables identified platelet count,serum bilirubin,INR and Meld-Na score as predictors of eGD. In the multivariate analysis transplant Meld-Na score (P=0.025,OR:1.175)and pretransplant platelet count(P=0.043,OR:0.956)were independently associated with eGD. CONCLUSION:eGD can be identified preoperatively and is associated with increased morbidity after LRLT. A prompt recognition of eGD can trigger a timely treatment.
