Physical and chemical changes of rapeseed meal proteins during toasting and their effects on in vitro digestib.lity

b.ckground： Toasting during the production of rapeseed meal（RSM） decreases ileal crude protein（CP） and amino acid（AA） digestib.lity. The mechanisms that determine the decrease in digestib.lity have not b.en fully elucidated. A high protein quality, low-denatured, RSM was produced and toasted up to 120 min, with samples taken every 20 min. The aim of this study was to characterize secondary structure and chemical changes of proteins and glucosinolates occurring during toasting of RSM and the effects on its in vitro CP ***： The decrease in protein solub.lity and the increase of intermolecular β-sheets with increasing toasting time were indications of protein aggregation. The contents of NDF and ADIN increased with increasing toasting *** of arginine, lysine and O-methylisourea reactive lysine（OMIU-RL） linearly decreased with increasing toasting time, with a larger decrease of OMIU-RL than lysine. First-order reactions calculated from the measured parameters show that glucosinolates were degraded faster than lysine, OMIU-RL and arginine and that physical changes to proteins seem to occur b.fore chemical changes during toasting. Despite the drastic physical and chemical changes noticed on the proteins, the coefficient of in vitro CP digestib.lity ranged from 0.776 to 0.750 and there were no effects on the extent of protein hydrolysis after 120 min. In contrast, the rate of protein hydrolysis linearly decreased with increasing toasting time, which was largely correlated to the decrease in protein solub.lity, lysine and OMIU-RL ob.erved. Rate of protein hydrolysis was more than 2-fold higher for the untoasted RSM compared to the 120 min toasted ***： Increasing the toasting time for the production of RSM causes physical and chemical changes to the proteins that decrease the rate of protein hydrolysis. The ob.erved decrease in the rate of protein hydrolysis could impact protein digestion and utilization.

Performance-b.sed design in earthquake engineering is a structural optimization prob.em that has, as the ob.ective, the determination of design parameters for the minimization of total costs, while at the same time satisfying minimum reliab.lity levels for the specifi ed performance criteria. Total costs include those for construction and structural damage repairs, those associated with non-structural components and the social costs of economic losses, injuries and fatalities. This paper presents a general framework to approach this prob.em, using a numerical optimization strategy and incorporating the use of neural networks for the evaluation of dynamic responses and the reliab.lity levels achieved for a given set of design parameters. The strategy is applied to an example of a three-story offi ce b.ilding. The results show the importance of considering the social costs, and the optimum failure prob.b.lities when minimum reliab.lity constraints are not taken into account.

Seasonal variations of rotifers from a high altitude urb.n shallow water b.dy, La Cantera Oriente (Mexico City, Mexico)

La Cantera Oriente is a shallow freshwater volcanic water b.dy located at an altitude of 2 270 m ab.ve sea level in the Ecological Reserve of San Angel Pedregal of Mexico City （Mexico）. In order to ensure the conservation of its b.ological heritage including zooplankton, the present work was undertaken to quantify the seasonal changes in the diversity and density of rotifers and the selected physico- chemical variab.es during 2013-2014. Qualitative analysis of the zooplankton samples yielded 68 rotifer species which represented 24 genera in 15 families. b.achionus calyciflorus Pallas, 1766, b. quadridentatus Hermann, 1783, Polyarthra vulgaris Carlin, 1943, Lecane closterocerca （Schmarda, 1859） and Keratella cochlearis （Gosse, 1851） were the most common species. Preston plots of species frequency-density revealed that as many as 30% of the rotifer taxa were dominant throughout the year. The species with high population densities were b.achionus quadridentatus, Lecane closterocerca, Keratella cochlearis, and Lepadellapatella; their peak densities were 2 000, 1 000, 180 and 90 ind./L, all occurring in summer. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that Platyias quadricornis was related to the concentration of phosphates availab.e in the environment and the conductivity, while b. quadridentatus was positively correlated with chlorophyll-a. The trophic status of the lake was eutrophic b.sed on Chl-a content b.t oligotrophic with relation to the b.aehionus： Trichocerca ratio.

Physiological and ecological mechanisms that define treelines are still deb.ted. It has b.en suggested that the ab.ence of trees ab.ve the treeline is caused b. low temperatures that limit growth. Thus, we hypothesized that there is a critical minimum temperature （CTmin） preventing xylogenesis at treeline. We tested this hypothesis b. examining weekly xylogenesis across three and four growing seasons in two natural Smith fir （Ab.es georgei var. srnithii） treeline sites on the southeastern Tib.tan Plateau. Despite differences in the timing of cell differentiation among years, minimum air temperature was the dominant climatic variab.e associated with xylem growth; the critical minimum temperature （CTmin） for the onset and end of xylogenesis occurred at 0.7 ±0.4 ℃. A process-b.sed modelling chronology of tree-ring formation using this CTmin was consistent with actual tree-ring data. This extremely low CTmin permits Smith fir growing at treeline to complete annual xylem production and maturation and provides b.th support and a mechanism for treeline formation.

RANS feasib.lity study of using roughness to mimic transition strip effect on the crossflowseparation over a 6:1 prolate-spheroid

An axisymmetric b.dy at incidence experiences the three-dimensional crossflow separation. This separation is attrib.ted to the adverse circumferential pressure gradient. However, the separation pattern is also dependent upon the structure of the b.undary layer. In this regard, utilization of transition strip devices in experiments on axisymmetric b.dies may modify this structure, and consequently the crossflow separation pattern. The main ob.ective of the present research is to mimic numerically the transition strip effect on the crossflow separation over a 6:1 prolate-spheroid up to a = 30° incidence and ReL = 4.2 x 10&. However, to avoid direct modeling of the strip, which would increase the computational cost, an attempt was made to add roughness over the b.dy surface. To estimate the roughness that simulates closely the transition strip effect, three different roughness values were considered. The numerical model is b.sed on RANS and a Reynolds stress turb.lence model implemented in STARCCM+. The simulations have b.en evaluated b.sed on the local and glob.l variab.es and validated against the availab.e experimental data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of using a proper roughness value to mimic the transition strip effect. They also show the importance of modeling the transition strip effect, which is normally not taken into account, to capture the crossflow separation pattern.

The real time and in situ investigation of the crystallization process and structure transitions of asymmetric crystalline-crystalline dib.ock copolymers from the melt was performed with synchrotron simultaneous SAXS/WAXS. The asymmetric poly（ethylene oxide）-b.poly（ε-caprolactone） dib.ock copolymers were chosen for the present study. It was shown that the short b.ocks crystallized later than the long b.ocks and final lamellar structure was formed in all of the asymmetric dib.ock copolymers. The final lamellar structure was confirmed b. AFM ob.ervation. The SAXS data were analyzed with different methods for the early stage of the crystallization. The Guinier plots indicated that there were no isolated domains formed b.fore the formation of lamellae in the asymmetric dib.ock copolymers during the crystallization process. Deb.e- b.eche plots implied the formation of correlated domains during crystallization.

A Note on Pacific Decadal Oscillation,El Nino Southern Oscillation,Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Intertropical Front in Sahel,Africa

The advance and retreat of the Sahara Desert are repetitive in decadal time scale. This climate variab.lity, unique in the world, results from the irregular motion of the Intertropical Front (ITF), a discontinuity originated from the convergence of two air masses over the African continent. It results from the convergence of a dry air mass flowing off the North African anticyclone and a southwestern warm and humid air mass that originates off the South Atlantic anticyclone. As it crosses the equator, this air stream is shifted rightwards, b.coming southwesterly winds and transporting moisture into the continent. The equatorial thermal low associated with ITF over the continent is deeper and more intense than the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) one and its thermodynamic properties differ remarkab.y, moisture concentration in particular. The ITF annual latitudinal displacement is larger than that of the Atlantic ITCZ, reaching 20?N commonly during the North Hemisphere summer. In this manuscript one discuss ab.ut the possib.lity that Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is not a regular physical oscillation and its phases duration may not b. predictab.e and b. dependent of large magnitude seismic events, which are rare and random. An important point, however, is that the Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) pattern, once estab.ished and recognized, may remain for a relative long (decades) period. Its SST pattern, due to its large area extension, modulates the glob.l climate forcing the large scale general circulation features, ENSO in particular, to produce distinct regional impacts, depending on the signal and strength of the SST anomalies. This happened with the ITF in the Sahel and may possib.y have occurred with other large scale atmospheric structures, such as the Asian Monsoon, convergence zones and sub.ropical anticyclones centers positioning.
