Growth of carbon nanotube arrays on various CtxMey alloy films by chemical vapour deposition method

Carbon nanotube （CNT） arrays were fabricated on Ct-Me-N-（O） alloys with content of Ct in the range of 6-40 at.% by chemical vapour deposition. The Ct was a catalytic metal from the group of the following elements： Ni, Co, Fe, Pd, while Me was a transition metal from the group of Iv-vII of the periodic table （where Me=Ti, v, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ta, W, Re）. Carbon nanotubes were found to grow efficiently on the alloy surface with its composition containing Ti, v, Cr, Zr, Hf, Nb or Ta. The growth of CNTs was not observed when the alloy contained W or Re. Additions of oxygen and nitrogen in the alloy facilitated the formation of oxynitrides and catalyst extrusion on the alloy surface. Replacement of the metals in alloy composition affected the diameter of the resulting CNTs. The obtained results showed that the alloy films of varying thickness （10-500 nm） may be used for the CNTs growth. The resulting CNT material was highly homogenous and its synthesis reproducible.

Preventive effect of a pectic polysaccharide of the common cranberry vaccinium oxycoccos L. on acetic acid-induced colitis in mice

AIM： To study isolation and chemical characterization of pectin derived from the common cranberry vaccin/um oxycoccos L. （oxycoccusan OP） and the testing of its preventive effect on experimental colitis. METHODS： Mice were administrated orally with OP two days prior to a rectal injection of 5% acetic acid and examined for colonic damage 24 h later. Colonic inflammation was characterized by macroscopical injury and enhanced levels of myeloperoxidase activity measured spectrophotometrically with o-phenylene diamine as the substrate. The mucus contents of the colon were determined by the Alcian blue dye binding method. vascular permeability was estimated using 4% Evans blue passage after i.p. injection of 0.05 mol/L acetic acid. RESULTS： In the mice treated with OP, colonic macroscopic scores （1.1 ± 0.4 vs 2.7, P 〈 0.01） and the total square area of damage （10 ± 2 vs 21 ± 7, P 〈 0.01） were significantly reduced when compared with the vehicle-treated colitis group. OP was shown to decrease the tissue myeloperoxidase activity in colons （42 ± 11 vs 112 ± 40, P 〈 0.01） and enhance the amount of mucus of colitis mice （0.9 ± 0.1 vs 0.4 ± 0.1, P 〈 0.01）. The level of colonic malondialdehyde was noted to decrease in OP-pretreated mice （3.6 ± 0.7 vs 5.1 ± 0.8, P 〈 0.01）. OP was found to decrease the inflammatory status of mice as was determined by reduction of vascular permeability （161 ± 34 vs 241 ± 21, P 〈 0.01）. Adhesion of peritoneal neutrophils and macrophages was also shown to decrease after administration of OP （141 ± 50 vs 235 ± 37, P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Thus, a preventive effect of pectin from the common cranberry, namely oxycoccusan OP, on acetic acid-induced colitis in mice was detected. A reduction of neutrophil infiltration and antioxidant action may be implicated in the protective effect of oxycoccusan.

The results of numerical simulation of the mosaic embedding iron ore sintering （MEBIOS） process according to the model presented in the first part of the study are introduced. The main objective of the second part is the elucidation of key factors influencing the process efficiency, particularly the sintering completeness, velocity of the heat wave propagation and maximum temperature achievable in the pellet during the wave propagation. Numerical results reveal that the mass fraction of coal, diameter of coal particles and air inlet velocity are of prime importance in determining efficiency of the MEBIOS sintering process.

BER Performance of Finite in Time Optimal FTN Signals for the viterbi Algorithm

In this article, we consider the faster than Nyquist(FTN) technology in aspects of the application of the viterbi algorithm(vA). Finite in time optimal FTN signals are used to provide a symbol rate higher than the "Nyquist barrier" without any encoding. These signals are obtained as the solutions of the corresponding optimization problem. Optimal signals are characterized by intersymbol interference(ISI). This fact leads to significant bit error rate(BER) performance degradation for "classical" forms of signals. However, ISI can be controlled by the restriction of the optimization problem. So we can use optimal signals in conditions of increased duration and an increased symbol rate without significant energy losses. The additional symbol rate increase leads to the increase of the reception algorithm complexity. We consider the application of vA for optimal FTN signals reception. The application of vA for receiving optimal FTN signals with increased duration provides close to the potential performance of BER,while the symbol rate is twice above the Nyquist limit.

vortex model of plane turbulent air flows in channels

We present a theoretical model of plane turbulent flows based on the previously proposed equations, which take into account both the longitudinal motion and the vortex tube rotation. Using the simple model of eddy viscosity, we obtain the analytical expressions for the mean velocity profiles of stationary turbulent flows. In particular,we consider the near-wall flow over a flat plate in a wind tunnel as well as Couette and Poiseuille flows in rectangular channels. In all these cases, the calculated velocity profiles are in good agreement with experimental data and results of direct numerical simulations.

Fluctuating fine-scale spatial genetic structure in the common shrews (Eulipotyphla, Mammalia)

The spatial genetic structure is a topical issue in the studies of various aspects of ecology and *** the multilocus autocorrelation method with hypervariable microsatellite genetic markers,we investigated aﬁne-scale pattern of genetic structure in 5 local populations of the common shrew Sorex araneus separated by distances of 300–1000 m(the Moscow chromosomal race).Spatial genetic autocorrelation analysis based on 5 microsatellite loci(expected heterozygosity>0.79)with 90 alleles revealed a consistent pattern of signiﬁcant positive genetic *** testing the autocorrelation at multiple scales from 25 to 500 m,we found that positive spatial genetic structure is detectable in distance classes ofvely correlated with a higher ratio of nonresident individuals to residents’activity(number of captures).In contrast to nonresident animals,the residents demonstrated prominent genetic *** difference(FST)between the populations was signiﬁcant(0.016–0.051)and comparable with that between populations of different races analyzed previously(0.016–0.038).FST was not associated with geographic *** demographic patterns allowed us to propose a scheme of genetic-structure dynamics involving periodic appearance of more related local groups and renewal of allelic proﬁles fromаcommon pool where the alleles are *** scheme predictsﬂuctuating genetic structure and random similar differences among local populations.

Age of maturation and behavioral tactics in male yellow ground squirrel Spermophilus fulvus during mating season

Life-history theory predicts that in hibemators age of maturation is related positively to body size and negatively to the duration of active season aboveground. Yellow souslik is a large-sized ground squirrel with long hibernation, which suggests late maturation. We used four-year field observations of marked individuals to determine the age of maturation in males through analysis of age-dependent variation in body size, mass, androgen status, timing of spring emergence, ranging patterns and social behavior during the mating season. Yearling males were smaller, lighter, had lower level of fecal testosterone, emerged later and had smaller home ranges than older males. Social activity and the number of females encountered did not differ between age classes. After the second hibernation none of the studied parameters varied with age. Cluster analysis revealed two behavioral tactics：＂active＂ males （adults only） emerged earlier, ranged more widely, initiated more contacts, encountered more females and were heavier than ＂passive＂ males （both yearling and adult）. Thus, males of S. fulvus reached adult size and matured after two hibernations, which is relatively fast for such a big species with short active period. Indirect evidence for copulations and high variation among yearlings in all parameters suggest that some of them might successfully compete with adults. Active tactic of wandering and searching for females is energetically costly, and probably only adult males in good physical condition can afford it, whereas passive tactic of residing is energy saving and good for adults in poor condition and for yearlings that are continuing to grow.

Dynamic magnetic hysteresis in a liquid suspension of acicular maghemite particles

This paper presents theoretical and experimental studies on the magnetodynamics and energy absorption in a dilute suspension of small ferromagnetic particles with magnetic hysteresis and mechanical mobility in an AC magnetic field. Experiments with 0.1% suspensions of acicular particles of gamma ferric oxide in solid and liquid matrices, subjected to a 430 Hz magnetic field with an intensity of up to 1200 Oe, revealed important role of particle mobility. The main qualitative and quantitative features of the phenomenon are in agreement with a model of joint magneto-mechanical dynamics of particles with a chain-of-spheres mode of incoherent magnetic reversal.

Potential role of peripheral blood mononuclear cell' s mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction in heart failure severity prediction in patients with cardioverter-defibrillator implantation indications

Background It has been reported that the mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction (MRD) is important mechanisms affecting the heart failure (HF) *** sought to evaluate the potential role of MRD of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in HF severity prediction in patients with cardioverter-defibrillator implantation *** In this single-center study patients with HF of New York Heart Association (NYHA) Ⅰ-Ⅲ functional class (FC) and cardioverter-defibrillator implantation indications underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and MRD assessment using *** respiration rate (MRR) indicators (pyruvate+malate+adenosine diphosphate;succinate+adenosine diphosphate;pyruvate+malate–adenosine diphosphate[v4.1];succinate–adenosine diphosphate) were *** between HF NYHA FC,TTE and MRR indicators were *** on our data,we developed a risk model regarding HF *** Of 53 (100.0%) HF patients,33 (62.3%) had mild exercise intolerance (1stgroup) and 20 (37.7%) had moderate-to-severe exercise intolerance (2ndgroup).Patients with mild exercise intolerance were likely to have a higher v4.1(Pvalues.v4.1was independently associated with moderate-to-severe exercise intolerance in univariate and multivariate logistic regression (OR=0.932,95%CI:0.891–0.975,Pverity of HF is associated with PBMC mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction in patients with cardioverter-defibrillator implantation *** HF severity risk model including v4.1parameters is able to distinguish patients with mild and moderate-to-severe exercise *** investigations of their predictive significance are warranted.
