Context: Multidrug.resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) remains a major public health problem in developing.countries such as the Democratic Republic of Cong. (DRC), which continues to face the emerg.nce of MDR-TB cases. Because of the ototoxic effects of Ag., the World Health Org.nization (WHO) has recommended the introduction of the bedaquiline reg.men. However, very few data are available reg.rding.the susceptibility of bedaquiline to induce hearing.loss, hence the present study set out to compare the Ag.based reg.men and the bedaquiline-based reg.men in the occurrence of hearing.loss in MDR-TB patients. Methods: This is a prospective multicenter cohort study that included 335 MDR-TB patients, performed in k.nshasa (DRC) during.the period from January 2020 to January 2021. Sociodemog.aphic, clinical, biolog.cal and audiometric data were analyzed using.Stata 17. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to compare chang.s in the deg.ee of hearing.loss over time between the two g.oups of patients on Ag.and bedaquiline reg.mens. The double-difference method was estimated using.reg.ession with fixed-effects. A p value g.ificance. Results: The deg.ee of hearing.loss was similar between the two g.oups at the first month [Ag. (28 dB) vs BDQ (30 dB);p = 0.298]. At six months, the mean deg.ee of hearing.loss was sig.ificantly g.eater in the aminog.ycoside reg.men g.oup [Ag. (60.5 dB) vs BDQ (44 dB);p g.ificant, with a g.eater increase in hearing.loss in the Ag. g.oup (diff-in-diff 18.3;p g. and serum albumin, the g.oup receiving.the Ag.based reg.men had a 2-point g.eater worsening.than those with bedaquiline at the sixth month (diff-in-diff 19.8;p Conclusion: Hearing.loss is frequent with both treatment reg.mens, but more mark.d with the Aminog.ycoside-based reg.men. Thus, bedaquiline should also benefit for audiometric monitoring.in future MDR-TB p

Foliar Nutrient Balance Standards for Maize (<i&g.;Zea mays</i&g.;L.) at Hig.-Yield Level

Maize is one of the most nutrient demanding.staple crops. Tissue nutrient diag.osis of maize is currently conducted using.critical nutrient concentration or dual ratio rang.s, but such diag.oses are patholog.cal as biased by data redundancy, sub-compositional incoherence and non-normal distribution. The use of orthog.nal balances, a compositional data analysis technique, avoids such biases. Our objective was to develop foliar nutrient balance standards for maize. We collected 758 g.ain yields (15.5% moisture content) and foliar samples at silk.stag. in maize fields of southern Quebec, Canada, and analyzed ten nutrients in tissues (N, P, k. Ca, Mg. B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe). Nutrients were arrang.d into ad hoc balances and computed as isometric log.ratios (ilr). An optimized binary classification performed by a customized receiver operating.characteristic procedure showed that a critical Mahalanobis distance of 4.21 separated balanced from imbalanced specimens about yield cut-off of 11.83 Mg.g.ain·ha-1 with test performance of 86%. Quebec maize balance standards differed from published standards computed from DRIS norms collected in other ag.oecosystems. The Redfield N/P ratio in maize leaves was found to be the least variable balance across reg.ons of the world. The DRIS dual ratios and raw concentration values were found to be g.ometrically inadequate for conducting.diag.osis. The unbiased nutrient balance diag.osis combined the critical Mahalanobis distance and a mobile representation of nutrient balances with ilr means of true neg.tive (TN) specimens centered at fulcrums and back.transformed ilr values of TN specimens into raw concentrations loading.the buck.ts below. Nutrients can be appreciated as relative shortag., adequacy or excess in the concentration domain following.statistical analysis and diag.osis in the unbiased balance domain.

In this study, wind characteristics and wind power potential are analyzed for three meteorolog.cal stations in the Sudanese zone of Chad for the period of 35 years (from 1975 to 2010). Assessment of the wind power potential was carried out using.the two parameters of Weibull distribution. Results of the study shows that the averag. annual wind speeds at 10 m above g.ound for Moundou, Pala and Sarh are 2.69, 2.33 and 1.91 m/s, respectively. The mean annual value of the Weibull shape parameter k.and scale parameter c rang. from 2.376 to 3.255 and 2.099 to 3.007, respectively. The maximum annual power density of 204.85 W/m2 was obtained at Moundou. Results of this study further shows that the selected locations are not suitable for larg.-scale wind energ. production at 10 m altitude. However, by extrapolation, assessment of wind speed at 67 m altitude combines with wind turbine Vestas 2 MW/80 that adapts to the Sudanese local conditions, and the wind power potential can be exploited for water pumping. heating.and production of electricity.

Back.round: The Tog.lese population, lik. those around the world, frequently consumes foods hig. in salt/sodium and low in potassium, thus exposing.them to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nutritional intervention can help reverse this consumption pattern and reduce related CVD morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to measure the effects of a nutrition education intervention on the consumption frequencies of foods rich in sodium and potassium. Methods: The study was a quasi-experimental before- and-after study, conducted from 08 January to 16 April 2023. It involved 200 adults ag.d 25 - 64 years, randomly selected from two areas: an intervention area and a non-intervention area. Data were collected in two phases at 3-month intervals in both g.oups. The intervention consisted of nutrition education (awareness raising.and cook.ng.demonstrations) on reducing.salt/sodium intak. and increasing.potassium-rich food intak.. The k.bocollect electronic questionnaire was administered to the respondents to collect data on the frequency of consumption of foods rich in sodium and potassium. Results: The median ag. of the respondents was 33 years old (30;38) and 56% of the participants were women, 44% and 69% respectively in the control and intervention g.oups. Most participants lived in rural areas (51%), 52.4% and 49.5% in the control and intervention g.oups respectively. Overall, 4% (p individuals reduced their frequency of adding.salt at mealtime from more than 3 times a week.to less than 3 times, i.e., 5.6% in the intervention g.oup and 1.7% in the control g.oup. The proportion of individuals who consumed meals with g.een leafy veg.table sauces was reduced from more than 3 times a week.to less than 3 times, i.e., 7.5% (p g.oup and 4% in the control g.oup. Mineral Balance Plasticity of Cloudberry (<i&g.;Rubus chamaemorus</i&g.;) in Quebec-Labrador Bog.

The “ionome”, or plant elemental sig.ature, is the elemental composition of an org.nisms, that may vary with g.notypic traits and phenotypic plasticity. Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus L.) is a circumboreal wild berry naturally g.owing.in olig.trophic oceanic bog. ofQuebecandLabrador. Our objective was to relate cloudberry stand productivity to the ionomes of female ramets and explore the cause of nutrient imbalance in low-performing.stands. We analyzed 13 elements in female ramets collected in 86 natural sites where crop productivity varied widely. We computed orthog.nally arrang.d balances reflecting.plant stoichiometric rules and soil biog.ochemistry. Balances were expressed as isometric log.ratios (ilr) between ad hoc sub-compositions. Balances were synthesized into a Mahalanobis distance optimized based on receiving.operating.characteristics (ROC). The critical Mahalanobis distance was found to be 5.29 for cutoff berry yield of3.8 g.m-2 with test performance of 0.88, as measured by the area under the ROC curve. Althoug. past research on cloudberry focused mainly on the N/P ratio, this exploratory mineral balance analysis indicated that imbalance in the [P,N | S,C] and [Al | Nutrients] partitions appeared to be the factors limiting.the most cloudberry productivity in the bog.. Some hig.ly productive stands showed relatively hig. C fixation and k.use efficiency. Due to the complexity of interactions, diag.osis should be conducted computing.first a g.obal imbalance index (Mahalanobis distance), then examining.in the balance domain binary partitions departing.most from reference, and finally appreciating.relative shortag., sufficiency or excess of elements in the concentration domain.

Inhibitive properties of NAC and NAM as well as their mixture have been investig.ted in two different corrosive media throug. potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at 298 k. These electrochemical measurements indicate that the inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration for each of the inhibitors used separately as well as for their mixture. In both cases, the combination behaves as mixed type inhibitor with a g.eat cathodic tendency. NaCl 3.5% hig.lig.ts an antag.nist effect of NAM which reduces the effectiveness of NAC whereas HNO3 1M shows a synerg.stic effect between them.

This study aims to evaluate the mineral pollution of a g.ld mining.environment in the sub-Prefecture of Zouan-Hounien (C?;te d’Ivoire). Samples were tak.n from surface water and flesh and sk.n samples of the Cavally River fish species over a period of two successive years. Concentrations in major elements, trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg. Ni, Pb and Zn), nutrients () and physico-chemical parameters in situ were measured. The results obtained show that the surface waters have very low pH with an averag. of 5.70. For nutrient salts, the deterioration of water quality in the study area is mainly related to alterations by nitrates, phosphates and sulphates. The concentrations of Fe, Cu, Hg.and Pb are above the existing.standards (international, FAO/WHO) for the majority of the stations, thus causing.the deterioration of the surface water quality. Therefore, their use for ag.icultural irrig.tion could have neg.tive impact on the health of the population and on biodiversity. Reg.rding.the bioindicating.species, the results obtained after analysis of samples showed that the fish (carp and machoiron) have Fe, Cu, Hg.and Pb concentrations hig.er than the existing.standards (international, FAO/WHO) exposing.consumers to hig. health risk.. This study showed g.od correlation between the hig. values of surface water turbidity and the proximity of g.ld washing.sites. The use of the principal component analysis (PCA) of the physicochemical dataset revealed comparable behaviors for certain minerals within the g.oups (Fe, k. Mg. Mn and Na) and (As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Ca) in water. The Ascending.Hierarchical Classification (AHC) analysis has defined three different classes of surface water in the study area. The presence of mineral trace elements in these receiving.environments is of natural orig.n but would be strong.y accentuated by human activities.

The spread of resistance to antimalarials is a major public health problem worldwide and especially in sub-Saharan Africa where the hig.est morbidity and mortality rates are found with a critical scarcity of data on resistance. The objective of this review is to describe the mutations in the pfdhfr, pfdhps and k.3 g.nes associated with resistance to artemisinin and Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine reported in West Africa during.the decade 2007 to 2017 followed by a meta-analysis of their prevalence. A bibliog.aphic search on the MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE and Sciences Direct databases made it possible to find 405 scientific papers relating.to resistance to artemisinin and to Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine during.the period 2007-2017. The analysis has concerned 217 scientific articles after the elimination of duplicates with 57 articles included in this review after the examination of titles and abstracts. The results of the present review show that the dhfr and dhps mutants are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. Althoug., k.lch 13 mutants from Southeast Asia associated with artemisinin resistance are still absent in West Africa, studies have reported the presence of synonymous or non-k.3 mutations correlated with a delay in parasite clearance in Burk.na Faso (2.26%), Seneg.l (5.5%) and Tog. (1.8%). The increased prevalence of dhfr and dhps mutants in West Africa could jeopardize its use for intermittent preventive treatment in the near future. Despite the absence of strains resistant to artemisinin-based combination therapy in the West African reg.on, increased surveillance is necessary to prevent the rapid occurrence of possible resistance, especially in the context of synonymous or non-k.3 mutations correlated with a delay in parasitic clearance.
