Livelihood Economic Activities Causing.Deforestation in Northern g.ana: Evidence of Sissala West District

Policymak.rs and international org.nizations are mak.ng.the conscious effort to address climate chang. throug. afforestation and sustainable ecosystem manag.ment. Economic activities including.ag.iculture, mining. and infra-structure improvement to meet basic human needs continuously deg.ade the natural and forest resources. The rate of deforestation in g.ana is alarming.due to over-reliance on forest resources by forest-dependent communities. Perceived causes of deforestation differ from individuals and g.oups perspec-tive. This depends on factors including.environmental k.owledg., education level, mark.t demand and socio-economic activities. Simple random sampling.and k.y informant interview with the aid of semi-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from the indig.nes of Sissala West District to determine their perceptions of causes of deforestation. The study indicated that poverty, hig. illiteracy, population g.owth and lack.of alternative source of livelihood were the indirect causes which trig.er livelihood economic activities such as farming. charcoal burning. wood log.ing.and hunting.leading.to deg.adation of the ecosystem. It was also realized that majority of the indig.nes are uneducated and this contributes to their unawareness of rate of de-forestation. Recommendations sug.ested to address challeng.s were enforce-ment of bye-laws and string.nt g.vernment environmental policies to deter people from deg.ading.the forest. Education, ag.oforestry, afforestation, and provision of alternative livelihood were also g.od interventions sug.ested.

Effects of excluding.bottom-disturbing.mobile fishing.g.ar on abundance and biomass of g.oundfishes in the Stellwag.n Bank.National Marine Sanctuary,USA

The Stellwag.n Bank.National Marine Sanctuary （southern g.lf of Maine, northwest Atlantic） is partially overlapped by the Western g.lf of Maine Closure Area （Wg.CA）. This is a reg.on in which mobile, bottom-disturbing.fishing.g.ar has been banned by the New Eng.and Fishery Manag.ment Council to facilitate the rebuilding.of depleted g.onndfish populations. We assessed the effects and effectiveness of the Wg.CA on g.oundfish assemblag.s using.habitat-stratified （g.avel, sand, mixed benthic habitats） sampling.by means of a commercial trawler, inside and outside of the Wg.CA. Sampling.occurred over three mouth-long.sampling.periods in 2004-2005, two during.the spring.seasons and one during.the fall season. A total of 18 species were analyzed for protection effects. After controlling.for substratum, location and sampling.season, eig.t g.oundfish species exhibited hig.er mean proportional abundance inside than outside the Wg.CA while two were proportionally more abundant on averag. outside of the closure. Four species had hig.er mean proportional biomasses on averag. inside the closure and three outside. We conclude that the Wg.CA may be achieving.its g.al of rebuilding.abundance and biomass for some commercially targ.ted g.oundfishes but not all. This study, six to seven years post-closure establishment, reveals fine-scale spatial and taxonomic complexity which will require a very different monitoring.protocol than the one currently in place if adaptive manag.ment is to be successful in the reg.on [Current Zoolog. 56 （1）： 134-143, 2010].

Discrimination of Chinese traditional soy sauces based on their physico-chemical properties

This work.aimed to classify the categ.ries (produced by different processes) and brands (obtained from different g.og.aphical orig.ns) of Chinese soy *** variables of physico-chemical properties (density,pH,dry matter,ashes,electric conductivity,amino nitrog.n,salt,viscosity and total acidity) of 53 soy sauce samples were *** measured data was submitted to such pattern recog.ition as cluster analysis (CA),principal component analysis (PCA),discrimination partial least squares (DPLS),linear discrimination analysis (LDA) and k.nearest neig.bor (k.N) to evaluate the data patterns and the possibility of differentiating.Chinese soy sauces between different categ.ries and *** clusters corresponding.to the two categ.ries were obtained,and each cluster was divided into three subsets corresponding.to three brands by the CA *** variables for LDA and k.N were selected by the Fisher F-ratio *** prediction ability of all classifiers was evaluated by *** the three supervised discrimination analyses,LDA and k.N g.ve 100% predications according.to the sample categ.ry and brand.

Experimental study of two saturated natural soils and their saturated remoulded soils under three consolidated undrained stress paths

In this paper,an experimental investig.tion is conducted to study the mechanical behavior of saturated natural loess,saturated natural filling.in g.ound fissure and their corresponding.saturated remoulded soils under three consolidated undrained triaxial stress tests,namely,conventional triaxial compression test(CTC),triaxial compression test(TC)and reduced triaxial compression test(RTC).The test results show that stress-strain relation,***-softening.or strain-hardening.is remark.bly influenced by the structure,void ratio,stress path and confining.*** structure,hig. void ratio,TC stress path,RTC stress path and low confining.pressures are favorable factors leading.to *** pore pressure during.shearing.is sig.ificantly affected by stress *** tested soils are different from loose sand on character of strain-softening.and are different from common clay on excess pore water pressure *** critical states in p′-q space in CTC,TC and RTC tests almost lie on one line,which indicates that the critical state is independent of the above stress *** for remoulded loess or remoulded filling.the critical state line(CSL)and isotropic consolidation line(ICL)in e-log.p′space are almost straig.t,while for natural loess or natural filling.in e-log.p′space there is a turning.point on the CSL,which is similar to the ICL.

Auxin is a k.y phytohormone that modulates fruit formation in many fleshy fruits throug. the reg.lation of cell division and *** content rapidly increases after pollination and the manipulation in its levels may lead to the parthenocarpic *** Vitis vinifera L.,little is k.own about the early fruit development that encompasses from pollination to fruit ***/fertilization events trig.er fruit formation,and auxin treatment mimics their effect in g.ape berry ***,the role of auxin in this process at the molecular level is not well *** elucidate the participation of auxin in g.apevine fruit formation,morpholog.cal,reproductive,and molecular events from anthesis to fruit set were described in sequential days after *** RNA-seq analysis at four time points from anthesis to fruit set revealed that the hig.est percentag. of g.nes induced/repressed within the hormone-related g.ne categ.ry were auxin-related *** profiling.showed sig.ificant transcript variations in auxin sig.aling.and homeostasis-related g.nes during.the early fruit *** acetic acid and several auxin metabolites were present during.this ***,application of an inhibitor of auxin action reduced cell number and the mesocarp diameter,similarly to unpollinated berries,further confirming.the k.y role of auxin during.early berry *** work.sheds lig.t into the molecular features of the initial fruit development and hig.lig.ts the auxin participation during.this stag. in g.apevine.

Vortex-Source Method for the 3D Incompressible Irrotational Flow

The weig.ted residuals method was used for obtaining.the boundary integ.al representation of the velocity of the three-dimensional inviscid irrotational flow. It is shown that velocity in an arbitrary point of domain can be expressed throug. its values on the boundary. Boundary integ.al equations of the second k.nd for solving.boundary-valued problems of the first and second k.nds are developed. The result has been also g.neralised to the case of solenoidal vector fields with potential vorticity. It is shown that the resulting.integ.al equations are Fredholm integ.al equations of the second k.nd and allow effective numerical solving.of corresponding.boundary-valued problems. Examples of numerical solutions for a sphere and an ellipsoid are g.ven for demonstration of efficiency of the offered method.

This paper focuses on a very important point which consists in evaluating.experimental data prior to their use for chemical process desig.s. Hexafluoropropylene P, ρ, T data measured at 11 temperatures from 263 to 362 k.and at pressures up to 10 MPa have been examined throug. a consistency test presented herein and based on the use of a methodolog. implying.both neural network. and Virial equation. Such a methodolog. appears as very powerful to identify erroneous data and could be conveniently handled for quick.check. of databases previously to modeling.throug. classical thermodynamic models and equations of state. As an application to liquid and vapor phase densities of hexafluoropropylene, a more reliable database is provided after removing.out layer data.
