Liver transplantation in the era of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/metabolic(dysfunction)associated fatty liver disease:the dilemma of the steatotic liver graft on transplantation and recipient survival

Liver transplantation remains the only curative therapy for end-stage liver disease and there is a well-established shortage of transplantable deceased donor organs to meet the growing demand of waitlisted patients.Steatotic liver grafts represent the most common type of so-called extended criteria donor(ECD)grafts aimed at ameliorating this disparity.However,steatotic grafts are associated with increased post-transplant complications and graft failure(1).Hepatic graft steatosis is strongly correlated with the high prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and metabolic(dysfunction)associated fatty liver disease(mAFLD)in the general population.NAFLD and mAFLD are related,but not equivalent,liver disorders that are linked with obesity and diabetes(2).Global prevalence of NAFLD is estimated at~25%and rising(3).models predict that NAFLD prevalence will increase by 21%to affect 100.9 million persons worldwide by 2030(4).As more donors have NAFLD,the steatotic liver graft will continue to be a challenge for liver transplantation.But,promising efforts(e.g.,organ pump with defatting agents)are under way,aimed at expanding the donor pool in the coming years.Herein,we briefly summarize approaches for assessment of hepatic steatosis,describe recipient outcomes associated with the use of steatotic liver grafts,and highlight strategies that may be used to mitigate risk considering the ongoing NAFLD/mAFLD epidemic.

Petroselinum crispum extract ameliorates scopolamine-induced cognitive dysfunction:role on apoptosis,inflammation and oxidative stress

This study was designed to investigate whether Petroselinum crispum(PC)extract has protective effects on the brain in the scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s disease(AD)rat model.The rats were divided into;control,scopolamine(1 mg/kg,i.p.),galantamine(1.5 mg/kg,i.p.)and PC extract(2 g/kg,p.o.)-treated scopolamine groups.On day 14,the novel object recognition test(NORT)and morris water maze test(mWmT)were performed and then the rats were sacrificed.Scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments observed in the NORT and mWmT,significantly improved with PC extract and galantamine treatments.Scopolamine reduced m_(1) receptor expression,Bcl-2/Bax ratio,and glutathione levels in the hippocampus and frontal cortex,while malondialdehyde levels,caspase-3/9 expressions,and acetylcholinesterase(AChE)activity were found to be increased.On the other hand,PC and galantamine treatments reversed these changes.In conclusion,PC extract has shown an ameliorative effect on the spatial and recognition memory,m_(1) receptor expression,apoptosis,oxidative stress,and increased AChE activity.Thus,it was concluded that PC could prevent AD-like conditions and can be used as a functional food.However,since animal models do not completely mimic those of humans,based on the data obtained in this study,the importance of PC on human AD should be demonstrated in future studies.

AIm: To investigate the frequency of occult hepatitis B, the clinical course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation and reverse seroconversion and associated risk factors in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. mETHODS: This study was conducted in 90 patients undergoing autologous HSCT. Occult HBV infection was investigated by HBV-DNA analysis prior to transplantation, while HBV serology and liver function tests were screened prior to and serially after transplantation. HBV-related events including reverse seroconversion and reactivation were recorded in all patients. RESULTS: None of the patients had occult HBV prior to transplantation. Six (6.7%) patients were positivefor HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) prior to transplantation and received lamivudine prophylaxis; they did not develop HBV reactivation after transplantation. Clinical HBV infection emerged in three patients after transplantation who had negative HBV-DNA prior to HSCT. Two of these three patients had HBV reactivation while one patient developed acute hepatitis B. Three patients had anti-HBc as the sole hepatitis B-related antibody prior to transplantation, two of whom developed hepatitis B reactivation while none of the patients with antibody to HBV surface antigen (anti-HBs) did so. The 14 anti-HBs-and/or anti-HBc-positive patients among the 90 HSCT recipients experienced either persistent (8 patients) or transient (6 patients) disappearance of anti-HBs and/or anti-HBc. HBsAg seroconversion and clinical hepatitis did not develop in these patients. Female gender and multiple myeloma emerged as risk factors for loss of antibody in regression analysis (P marker seems to be a risk factor for reactivation after autologous HSCT. Lamivudine prophylaxis in HbsAg-positive patients continues to be effective.

The transition metal manganese （mn） is indispensable for photoautotrophic growth since photosystem II （PSII） employs an inorganic mn4CaOs cluster for water splitting. Here, we show that the Arabidopsis membrane protein CHLOROPLAST mANGANESE TRANSPORTER1 （CmT1） is involved in chloroplast mn homeostasis. CmT1 is the closest homolog of the previously characterized thylakoid mn transporter PHOTOSYNTHESIS-AFFECTED mUTANT71 （PAm71）. In contrast to PAm71, CmT1 resides at the chloro- plast envelope and is ubiquitously expressed. Nonetheless, like PAm71, the expression of CmT1 can also alleviate the mn-sensitive phenotype of yeast mutant qomrl. The cmtl mutant is severely suppressed in growth, chloroplast ultrastructure, and PSII activity owing to a decrease in the amounts of pigments and thylakoid membrane proteins. The importance of CmT1 for chloroplast mn homeostasis is demonstratedby the significant reduction in chloroplast mn concentrations in cmtl-1, which exhibited reduced mn binding in PSII complexes. moreover, CmT1 expression is downregulated in mn-surplus conditions. The pam71 cmtl-ldouble mutant resembles the cmtl-f single mutant rather than pare71 in most respects. Taken together, our results suggest that CmT1 mediates mn2 uptake into the chloroplast stroma, and that CmT1 and PAm71 function sequentially in mn delivery to PSII across the chloroplast envelope and the thylakoid membrane.

＜正＞ This contribution gives an overview about the present state of the art of lock-in thermography （LIT） applied in solar cell research. Originally introduced as a shunt imaging technique working without light irradiation, recently a number of new LIT techniques have been proposed using light irradiation to the cell. These techniques allow to image the lifetime distribution and Joule heat losses under illumination, and they allow to detect non-contacted regions in the cell. moreover, shunts can be imaged already before contacts are formed. All presently known LIT techniqes applied to solar cells are reviewed and their physical bases are explained. With these new techniques, LIT has become a universal tool for characterizing solar cells.

Objective:To identify the clinical characteristics and outcomes of hospital-acquired SARS-CoV-2 infection during the vaccination period nationwide in Turkey.methods:COVID-19 patients followed in the pandemic services across Turkey between January 1,2021,and march 31,2022 were investigated retrospectively.Nosocomial COVID-19 was defined as a patient neither diagnosed with COVID-19 nor suspected COVID-19 at the hospital admission and was confirmed COVID-19≥5 days after hospital admission.The primary outcome of this study was in-hospital mortality;demographic features and vaccination status was compared between survivors and non-survivors.Results:During the study period,15573 COVID-19 patients were followed in 18 centers and 543(3.5%)patients were nosocomial COVID-19.most patients with nosocomial COVID-19(80.4%)were transferred from medical wards.162(29.8%)of the patients with nosocomial COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit due to disease severity and 138(25.4%)of the patients died during hospital stay.Advanced age(≥65 years)and number of comorbid diseases(≥2)was found to be associated with mortality in nosocomial COVID-19(OR 1.74,95%CI 1.11-2.74 and OR 1.60,95%CI 1.02-2.56,respectively).Vaccination was associated with survival in nosocomial COVID-19(OR 0.25,95%CI 0.16-0.38).Conclusions:Patients with nosocomial COVID-19 had increased admission to intensive care units and higher mortality rate.Vaccination can decrease the in-hospital mortality rate.
