Role of climatic variability in shaping intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in Mediterranean water beetles

The climatic variability hypothesis(CVH)predicts that organisms in more thermally variable environments have wider thermal breadths and higher thermal plasticity than those from more stable environments.However,due to evolutionary trade-offs,taxa with greater absolute thermal limits may have little plasticity of such limits(trade-off hypothesis).The CVH assumes that climatic variability is the ultimate driver of thermal tolerance variation across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients,but average temperature also varies along such gradients.We explored intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in three typical Mediterranean saline water beetles(families Hydrophilidae and Dytiscidae).For each species,we compared two populations where the species coexist,with similar annual mean temperature but contrasting thermal variability(continental vs.coastal population).We estimated thermal limits of adults from each population,previously acclimated at 17,20,or 25℃.We found species-specific patterns but overall,our results agree with the CVH regarding thermal ranges,which were wider in the continental(more variable)population.In the two hydrophilid species,this came at the cost of losing plasticity of the upper thermal limit in this population,supporting the trade-off hypothesis,but not in the dytiscid one.Our results support the role of local adaptation to thermal variability and trade-offs between basal tolerance and physiological plasticity in shaping thermal tolerance in aquatic ectotherms,but also suggest that intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance does not fit a general pattern among aquatic insects.Overlooking such intraspecific variation could lead to inaccurate predictions of the vulnerability of aquatic insects to global warming.

AIM:To compare the safety and effectiveness of eyelid treatment with the ILux®-MgD Treatment system in one session versus five sessions of mechanical meibomian gland expression(MMgE)in patients with moderate to severe meibomian gland dysfunction(MgD).METHODs:A prospective,randomized,open-label,and controlled clinical trial that compared one session of the ILux®MgD Treatment system versus five sessions of MMgE in both eyes of 130 patients aged≥18y with Ocular surface Disease Index(OsDI)scores≥13,total meibomian gland scores(Mgs)ofn the lower eyelid of each eye,and non-invasive tear break-up time(nI-TBUT)s,who were randomized 1:1 to ILux®or MMgE.REsULTs:The mean age was 58±17.49y.Baseline total Mgs scores in both treatment groups were comparable.During follow-up,there were significant differences in total Mgs and per sector with Pnalysis was performed using generalized estimating equations corresponding to the generalized linear model for repeated means to determine the treatment relationship with total Mgs,nIBUT,and OsDI.There was a significant difference between ILux®and MMgE(Pst to the twelfth month in Mgs,nI-BUT,and OsDI scores.no adverse events were reported.COnCLUsIOn:ILux®treatment compared to MMgE significantly improves symptoms and signs in patients with moderate to severe MgD for one year without adverse events.

The existence of neural stem cells(nsC)in specific areas of the adult mammalian brain leads to the generation of new neurons involved in homeostatic mechanisms.This is the case of the nsC of the subventricular zone(sVZ)that produces olfactory bulb(OB)neurons.These neurons integrate into circuits to modulate sensory information and participate in olfactory processing(Bragado Alonso et al.,2019).A series of hierarchical events need to take place to produce OB neurons from nsC of the sVZ.First,the activation of quiescent nsC is necessary to produce intermediate transit amplifying progenitors(TAP),which will generate neuroblasts.The latter are cells that maintain a proliferative phenotype while in an immature phase.However,once they initiate migration toward the OB,they progressively undergo their differentiation into neurons(Kjell et al.,2020).

BACKgROUnD Radicular cyst is a lesion of odontogenic origin that arises from epithelial remains due to periapical periodontitis caused by inflammatory reactions generated at the apex of affected teeth with infected or necrotic pulps.The therapeutic mana gement of radicular cysts is controversial.There is only one case report of enucleation of a radicular cyst managed with microsurgery and apicoectomy,but without the use of the guided tissue regeneration(gTR)technique in the same surgical procedure.The present clinical case describes the management of a radicular cyst with microsurgical approach,performance of an apicoectomy of the tooth associated with the entity,application of gTR technique,use of a resorbable membrane of type I bovine collagen,and bovine xenograft.CAsE sUMMARY A 68-year-old patient presented with a radicular cyst from an upper lateral incisor.The microsurgical management used was aimed at enucleating the chemical membrane,performing apicoectomy of the tooth along with careful and precise retrograde filling,and implementing gTR technique using a resorbable collagen membrane and bovine xenograft.The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed using histopathological analysis.The patient underwent follow-up evaluations at 10 and 30 d postoperatively.At 4 months postoperative evaluation,she remained asymptomatic,and radiographs showed significant periapical healing with adequate bone formation.COnCLUsIOn These results suggest that microsurgical management using the gTR technique with collagen membrane and xenograft,contributes to bone regeneration.

Cigarette butts(CBs)are one of the most common types of litter in the world.Due to the toxic substances they contain,the waste generated poses a harmful risk to the environment,and therefore there is an urgent need for alternative solutions to landfill storage.Thus,this work presents a possible revalorization of this waste material,which implies interesting environmental benefits.CBs were used as sacrificial templates for the preparation of CaO-based materials by impregnation with calcium and magnesium nitrates followed by flaming combustion.These materials presented enhanced porosity for their use in the Calcium Looping process applied either to thermochemical energy storage or CO_(2)capture applications.The influence of the concentration of Ca and Mg in the impregnating solutions on the multicycle reactivity of the samples was studied.An improved multicycle performance was obtained in terms of conversion for both applications.

The strategy of carbon neutrality is reshaping the global landscape of resource flow and recycling. As the final sink of geological minerals, the proliferated anthropogenic minerals, also called secondary resources, play an increasingly important role in resource supply enrichment. niobium is a critical metal that lacks full concern for its sustainability. The fundamental principle of niobium circularity is to recycle and maintain the material as close to the manufacturing process as possible. Here we estimate the niobium-containing applications lost at their end-of-life, underscoring the imperative to minimize such disposal.Additionally, we elucidate the extraction processes for scrap and alloy quantities throughout the industry's lifecycle. Drawing from anticipated waste generated by the majority of niobium applications, a forecast indicates a potential loss of approximately 168 kt by 2090 in the absence of recycling. Contrastingly, with a recycling efficiency of 90% for niobium, the projected loss diminishes to approximately 16 kt. We delve into the significance of niobium's circular economy and explore various aspects that demand further investigation for a seamless transition from linear to circular practices.

This work shows the synthesis,characterization and evaluation of dense-ceramic membranes made of Ce_(0.85)gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaniO_(3)(Cg-Ln)composites,where the fluorite-perovskite ratio(Cg:Ln)was varied as follows:75:25,80:20 and 85:15 wt.%.supports were initially characterized by XRD,sEM and electrical conductivity(using vacuum and oxygen atmospheres),to determine the composition,microstructural and ionic-electronic conductivity properties.Later,supports were infiltrated with an eutectic carbonates mixture,producing the corresponding dense dual-phase membranes,in which CO_(2)permeation tests were conducted.Here,CO_(2)permeation experiments were performed from 900 to 700℃,in the presence and absence of oxygen(flowed in the sweep membrane side).Results showed that these composites possess high CO_(2)permeation properties,where the O_(2)addition significantly improves the ionic conduction on the sweep membrane side.specifically,the gC80-Ln20 composition presented the best results due to the following physicochemical characteristics:high electronic and ionic conductivity,appropriate porosity,interconnected porous channels,as well as thermal and chemical stabilities between the composite support and carbonate phases.

Enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAs)programs have been widely applied in liver surgery since the publication of the first ERAs guidelines in 2016 and the new recommendations in 2022.Liver surgery is usually performed in oncological patients(liver metastasis,hepatocellular carcinoma,cholangiocarcinoma,etc.),but the real impact of liver surgery ERAs programs in oncological outcomes is not clearly defined.Theoretical advantages of ERAs programs are:ERAs decreases postoperative complication rates and has been demonstrated a clear relationship between complications and oncological outcomes;a better and faster posto-perative recovery should let oncologic teams begin chemotherapeutic regimens on time;prehabilitation and nutrition actions before surgery should also improve the performance status of the patients receiving chemotherapy.so,ERAs could be another way to improve our oncological results.We will discuss the literature about liver surgery ERAs focusing on its oncological implications and future investigations projects.

In this editorial,we comment on the article by Zhang et al entitled Development of a machine learning-based model for predicting the risk of early postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma.Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),which is characterized by high incidence and mortality rates,remains a major global health challenge primarily due to the critical issue of postoperative recurrence.Early recurrence,defined as recurrence that occurs within 2 years posttreatment,is linked to the hidden spread of the primary tumor and significantly impacts patient survival.Traditional predictive factors,including both patient-and treatment-related factors,have limited predictive ability with respect to HCC recurrence.The integration of machine learning algorithms is fueled by the exponential growth of computational power and has revolutionized HCC research.The study by Zhang et al demonstrated the use of a groundbreaking preoperative prediction model for early postoperative HCC recurrence.Challenges persist,including sample size constraints,issues with handling data,and the need for further validation and interpretability.This study emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts,multicenter studies and comparative analyses to validate and refine the model.Overcoming these challenges and exploring innovative approaches,such as multi-omics integration,will enhance personalized oncology care.This study marks a significant stride toward precise,efficient,and personalized oncology practices,thus offering hope for improved patient outcomes in the field of HCC treatment.
