The oxidation characteristics for Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo in the temperature range of 700-1200°C under steam supply condition were investigated by using a modified thermo-gravimetric *** specimens were oxidized for 3600 s at each temperature and then quenched in a *** oxidation rate constants were measured from the weight gains to evaluate the oxidation behavior in Zircaloy-4 and *** weight gain rates of Zirlo were lower than those of Zircaloy-4,leading to the low rate *** different oxidation behaviors between both cladding materials were considered to be due to the difference in their chemical compositions.

Visual field defect is one of the various clinical manifestations in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage（SAH）. Little is known about the pathogenic mechanism of visual field defect in SAH. In the current study,we investigated the diffusion tensor imaging （DTI） finding of the optic radiation in patients with SAH followingrupture of a cerebral artery aneurysm. We recruited 21 patients with aneurismal SAH （12 males, 9 females, mean age, 52.67 years; range, 41–68 years） who showed no definite lesion along the visual ***-one age-and sex-matched normal control subjects were also recruited. DTI data were acquired at an average of 5.9 weeks （range： 3–12 weeks） after onset and reconstruction of the optic radiation was performed using DTI-Studio software. The fractional anisotropy value, apparent diffusion coefficient value,and fiber number of the optic radiation were measured. The fractional anisotropy value of the optic radiation was significantly decreased, and the apparent diffusion coefficient value was significantly increased, in patients with aneurismal SAH than in normal control subjects. However, there was no significant difference in the fiber number of the optic radiation between patients with aneurismal SAH and normal control subjects. The decrement of fractional anisotropy value and increment of apparent diffusion coefficient value of the optic radiation in patients with aneurismal SAH suggest optic radiation injury. Therefore, we recommend a thorough evaluation for optic radiation injury in patient with aneurismal SAH.

AIM:To observe the effects of traditional anti-inflammatory medicine Lonicerae Flos (LF) on rat reflux esophagitis (RE) induced by pylorus and forestomach ligation compared with the well-known proton antioxidant, α-***:Rats were pretreated with three different dosages of LF (500, 250 and 125 mg/kg) orally, once a day for 14 d before pylorus and forestomach ligation. Nine hours after pylorus and forestomach ligation, changes to the stomach and esophagus lesion areas, gastric volumes, acid and pepsin outputs, antioxidant effects, esophageal lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase and glutathione (GSH) levels, and collagen contents (marker of flexibility) were observed on the esophageal and fundic histopathology. The results were compared with an α-tocopherol (once orally, 1 h before operation, 30 mg/kg) treated group in which the effects on RE were already conf ***: Pylorus and forestomach ligations caused marked increases of gross esophageal and gastric mucosa lesion areas, which corresponded with histopathological changes. In addition, increases of esophageal lipid peroxidation, decreases of SOD, CAT, and GSH-free radical scavengers, increases of collagen were observed. However, these pylorus and forestomach ligation induced RE were dose-dependently inhibited by treatment of 500, 250 and 125 mg/kg of LF extract, mediated by antioxidant effects. RE at 250 mg/kg showed similar effects α-***: The results suggest that antioxidant effects of LF could attenuate the severity of RE and prevent the esophageal mucosal damage, and validate its therapeutic use in esophageal reflux disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether scorpion extract elicits a neuroprotective effect in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine(MPTP)-treated mice models, and the genes associated with the therapeutic effects using RNA sequencing(seq)***: This study investigated the changes in interaction between messenger ribonucleic acid(m RNA) expression and deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) methylation related to the protective effects of scorpion extracts, in the substantia nigra(SN)region of a MPTP-induced Parkinson's disease(PD)***: In this model, scorpion extracts attenuated the motor impairment as demonstrated by the rotarod and open field tests. Scorpion extracts consistently attenuated the decrease of tyrosine hydroxylase(TH) positive neural cells in the SN and striatum of mice. We profiled genomewide DNA methylation using Methyl-Seq and measured the transcriptome using RNA-Seq in murine SN in the following groups: vehicle-treated MPTP-induced PD mice and scorpion extracttreated MPTP-induced PD mice. In total, 13 479 differentially expressed genes were identified in association with the anti-PD effect of the scorpion extract, mainly in the promoter and coding *** them, 47 were negatively correlated downregulated genes. Nineteen genes out of 47 downregulated genes were negatively correlated with the expression of the other 28 genes. Among these genes, SGSM1 was related to dopaminergic neurons including dopamine transporters, TH, dihydroxyphenylalanine decarboxylase, and dopamine D2 ***: This study provides insights into the anti-parkinsonian effects of scorpion extract and reveals the epigenetic targets in its therapeutic mechanism.

3-Dimensional liver volume assessment in patients with hepatitis B virus-related liver cirrhosis during long-term oral nucleos(t)ide analogues therapy

AIM To assess the effect of long-term oral nucleos(t)ide analogues(NUCs) therapy on liver volume change in patients with suppress hepatitis B virus(HBV)-related liver *** We reviewed the data of na?ve patients with HBVrelated liver cirrhosis, who had taken oral NUCs therapy, between 2003 and 2007 at Chonbuk University Hospital. We analyzed two consecutive sets of abdominal computerized tomography scans-one at the time oftreatment initiation and another at the second-year follow-up. Liver volume was calculated by 3-dimensional liver extraction volumetry *** A total of 55 patients(34 males) were included. There was 114.3 m L ± 167.8 m L(12.9% ± 17.9%) of increase in liver volume during the two years of NUCs therapy(993.8 m L ± 242.8 m L at baseline vs 1108.1 m L ± 263.3 m L at two-year follow-up, P < 0.001). The ratio of the measured baseline liver volume to the estimated standard liver volume was improved from 70.8% to 78.0%. An increase in liver volume was shown not only in patients with compensated cirrhosis(P = 0.046) but also in those with decompensated cirrhosis(P < 0.001). Significant factors for volume increases were Child-Turcotte-Pugh grade and model for end-stage liver disease score improvement without virological breakthrough. In multiple linear regression analysis, delta albumin and delta alanine aminotransferase levels showed a significant association with the increase in liver volume(P = 0.002 and 0.005, respectively).CONCLUSION Long-term oral NUCs therapy in patients with HBVrelated liver cirrhosis lead to significant increase in liver volume assessed with 3-dimensional liver extraction volumetry program.

Tc-99m ciprofloxacin imaging in diagnosis of chronic bacterial prostatitis

Aim: To investigate the value of Tc-99m ciprofloxacin imaging in the differential diagnosis of chronic bacterial prostatitis. Methods: The study included 4 normal subjects as the negative controls, 2 patients with acute prostatitis or cystourethritis as the positive controls and 59 patients diagnosed as chronic bacterial prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome by traditional laboratory tests. In every subject, the single photon emission computerized tomography images were obtained 3 h after intravenous injection of Tc-99m Ciprofloxacin. The results of the imaging were compared with those of laboratory tests. Results: On the images, negative uptake was observed in all normal subjects, while strong hot uptake, in the whole prostate of acute prostatitis patients and in the whole urethra of acute cystourethritis patients. In 13 (68 %) of 19 patients categorized as chronic bacterial prostatitis by standard laboratory tests, hot uptake with less intensity than that of acute prostatitis was observed in the prostate area around the prostatic urethra. Negative uptake in the prostate was observed in 6 of 19 patients (32 %) categorized as chronic bacterial prostatitis. Interestingly, hot uptake in the prostate was exhibited in 28 (70 %) of the 40 patients categorized as chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Conclusion: Tc-99m ciprofloxacin imaging is helpful in the differential diagnosis of prostatitis syndrome.

Prediction of nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin combination chemotherapy in gastric cancer patients

AIM:To evaluate the treatment options for nephrotoxicity due to cisplatin combination ***:We retrospectively reviewed patients who had received cisplatin combination chemotherapy for gastric cancer between January 2002 and December *** investigated patients who had shown acute renal failure(ARF),and examined their clinical characteristics,laboratory data,use of preventive measures,treatment cycles,the amount of cisplatin administered,recovery period,subsequent treatments,and renal status between the recovered and unrecovered ***:Forty-one of the 552 patients had serum creatinine(SCR)levels greater than 1.5 mg/*** found that pre-ARF SCR,ARF SCR,and ARF glomerular filtration rates were significantly associated with renal status postARF between the two groups(P=0.008,0.026,0.026,respectively).On the receiver operating characteristic curve of these values,a 1.75 mg/dL ARF SCR value had 87.5%sensitivity and 84.8%specificity(P=0.011).CONCLUSION:Cessation or reduction of chemotherapy should be considered for patients who have an elevation of SCR levels during cisplatin combination chemotherapy.
