Enhancement of liposomal stability and cellular drug uptake by incorporating tributyrin into celecoxib-loaded liposomes

Tributyrin,a triglyceride analog of short chain fatty acid butyrate,can act as a prodrug of an anticancer agent *** view of other reports that demonstrated the improved characteristics of conventional liposomes by incorporating small amount of nonphospholipids such as Tween 80,herein we sought to investigate whether the incorporation of tributyrin into the liposomal layers may provide additional advantages for liposomes as an anticancer drug *** were prepared with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine as a main phospholipid with or without addition of *** was loaded in liposomes as a model anticancer *** 80-incorporated liposomes were also prepared for ***-incorporated liposomes were ineffective in enhancing the skin permeation of celecoxib compared to Tween 80-incorporated ***,tributyrin-incorporated liposomes enhanced the entrapped celecoxib concentration to an extent comparable to Tween 80-incorporated ***,tributyrin-incorporated liposomes exhibited much higher stability compared to Tween 80-incorporated ***,the cellular uptake of celecoxib loaded in tributyrin-incorporated liposomes into mouse melanoma cells were more than 10-fold higher compared to that loaded in conventional-and Tween 80-incorporated *** together,the incorporation of tributyrin into conventional liposomes loaded with anticancer drugs may provide an advanced anticancer drug carrier delivering both drug and tributyrin.

Potassium-ion batteries(PIBs)have gained significant attention as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)due to the abundance of potassium(K)and low ***,the difficulty in finding appropriate electrode materials that can efficiently store the larger K ions has hindered their practical ***,we report a novel anode material,N-doped multichannel carbon nanofibers embedded with porous CoS nanoprisms(CSP@NMCNF),for high-performance *** CSP@NMCNF was synthesized using a two-step strategy comprising of the electrospinning of Co acetate hydroxide nanoprism/binary polymer blend and a subsequent heat *** porous CoS nanoprisms with an anisotropic morphology were well aligned along the length axis of the N-doped multichannel carbon nanofibers,thus ensuring their structural stability during the repeated charge-discharge *** addition,numerous pores facilitated the transport of electrons and ***,the CSP@NMCNF anode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance,delivering a high specific capacity of 368 mAh·g^(-1)at 0.5 A·g^(-1)after 200 cycles and excellent rate capability(232 mAh·g^(-1)at 2.0 A·g^(-1)).

Ratio of metastatic lymph nodes is more important for rectal cancer patients treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy

AIM:To evaluate the predictive value of the lymph node(LN) ratio(LNR,number of metastatic LNs/ examined LNs) for recurrence in patients with rectal cancer and to compare its applicability according to preoperative chemoradiotherapy(PCRT).METHODS:From 2000 to 2009,967 patients with metastatic LNs after curative resection for locally advanced rectal cancer were *** were categorized according to PCRT(PCRT vs No PCRT).The cut-off LNR was determined based on the p N1 vs p N2 when the recommended number of LNs was *** 5-year recurrence-free survival(RFS) rates using the Kaplan-Meier method were compared according to p/yp N stage and the LNR in each ***:Among patients with the same p/yp N stage,the 5-year RFS rate differed according to the *** addition,the 5-year RFS rate was significantly different between p N and LNR groups in patients with No *** PCRT group,however,only LNR was associated with *** multivariate analysis,both p N and LNR were significant independent prognostic factors for 5-year RFS in the No PCRT *** the PCRT group,only LNR category was found to be associated with RFS(HR = 2.36,95%CI:1.31-3.84,and P = 0.001).CONCLUSION:The LNR is an important prognostic predictor of RFS in rectal cancer patients especially treated with *** p N categories could not discriminate between prognostic groups of RFS after PCRT.

Postoperative changes of manometry after restorative proctocolectomy in Korean ulcerative colitis patients

To investigate the changes of postoperative anal sphincter function and bowel frequency in Korean patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODSA total of 127 patients with UC who underwent restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) during 20 years were retrospectively analyzed. The parameters of anal manometry and bowel frequency were compared according to the 6-mo intervals until 24 mo postoperatively. Manometry was used to measure the maximal squeezing pressure (MSP) and maximal resting pressure (MRP). RESULTSMSP decreased after surgery until 6 mo (157 to 142 mmHg); thereafter, it improved and was recovered to and maintained at the preoperative value at 12 mo postoperatively (142-170 mmHg, P < 0.001). Although the decreased MRP (65 to 56 mmHg) improved after 18 mo (62 mmHg), it did not completely recover to the preoperative value. The decreased rectal capacity after surgery (90 to 82 mL) gradually increased up to 150 mL at 24 mo. Although bowel frequency showed significant gradual decreases at each interval, it was stabilized after 12 mo postoperatively (6.5 times/d). CONCLUSIONPostoperative changes of manometry and bowel frequency after restorative proctocolectomy in Korean patients with UC were not different from those in Western patients with UC.

Automatic Discontinuity Classification of Wind-turbine Blades Using A-scan-based Convolutional Neural Network

Recent development trends in wind power generation have increased the importance of the safe operation of wind-turbine blades(WTBs). To realize this objective, it is essential to inspect WTBs for any defects before they are placed into operation. However, conventional methods of fault inspection in WTBs can be rather difficult to implement, since complex curvatures that characterize the WTB structures must ensure accurate and reliable inspection. Moreover, it is considered useful if inspection results can be objectively and consistently classified and analyzed by an automated system and not by the subjective judgment of an inspector. To address this concern,the construction of a pressure-and shape-adaptive phased-array ultrasonic testing platform, which is controlled by a nanoengine operation system to inspect WTBs for internal defects, has been presented in this paper. An automatic classifier has been designed to detect discontinuities in WTBs by using an A-scanimaging-based convolutional neural network(CNN). The proposed CNN classifier design demonstrates a classification accuracy of nearly 99%. Results of the study demonstrate that the proposed CNN classifier is capable of automatically classifying the discontinuities of WTB with high accuracy, all of which could be considered as defect candidates.

Intestinal endometriosis:Diagnostic ambiguities and surgical outcomes

BACKGROUND Endometriosis is a common disease for women of reproductive age. However,when it involves intestines, it is difficult to diagnose preoperatively because its symptoms overlap with other diseases and the results of evaluations can be unspecific. Thus it is important to know the clinical characteristics of intestinal endometriosis and how to exactly *** To analyze patients in whom intestinal endometriosis was diagnosed after surgical treatments, and to evaluate the clinical characteristics of preoperatively misdiagnosed *** We retrospectively reviewed the pathologic reports of 30 patients diagnosed as having intestinal endometriosis based on surgical specimens between January2000 and December 2017. We reviewed their clinical characteristics and surgical *** Twenty-three(76.6%) patients showed symptoms associated with endometriosis,with dysmenorrhea being the most common(n = 9, 30.0%). Thirteen patients(43.3%) had a history of pelvic surgeries. Ten patients(33.3%) had a history of treatment for endometriosis. Only 4 patients(13.3%) had a diagnosis of endometriosis based on endoscopic biopsy findings. According to preoperative evaluations, 13 patients(43.3%) had an initial diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis and 17 patients(56.6%) were misdiagnosed as having other diseases. The most common misdiagnosis was submucosal tumor in the large intestine(n = 8, 26.7%),followed by malignancies of the colon/rectum(n = 3, 10.0%) and ovary(n = 3,10.0%). According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, 5 complications were grade I or II and 2 complications were grade IIIa. Investigating seed mineral composition in Korean landrace maize(Zea mays L.) and its kernel texture specificity

Mineral malnutrition affects billions of people all over the world and biofortification of staple crops provides a potential way to alleviate dietary mineral *** example,nutritional quality is an important breeding target for fresh waxy maize(Zea mays L.),which is widely consumed in Asian *** improvement of mineral composition will require comprehensive profiling of the mineral composition of maize varieties and an understanding of the capacity for maize grains to accumulate ***,using inductively coupled plasma absorption emission spectrometry,we quantified 12 minerals from the seeds of 47 maize varieties,including 25 Korean *** also compared the mineral contents in varieties with different seed starch profiles:waxy maize(which contains 100%amylopectin),dent maize(roughly 75%amylopectin and 25%amylose),and flint maize(similar to dent maize).The amounts of potassium,phosphorus,and sulfur were correlated with seed texture,waxy maize having higher amounts of phosphorus and potassium than dent maize and lower amounts of sulfur than flint maize or dent *** addition,a positive relationship was detected between the amount of phosphorus and that of potassium,magnesium,and *** results provide information on maize seed mineral composition and indicate that it could be affected by starch ***,the landraces that exhibit high mineral contents could be used as germplasm materials for breeding programs aimed at producing biofortified maize cultivars.

Towards Interference-Aware ZigBee Transmissions in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Cross-technology interference(CTI)from diverse wireless networks such as ZigBee,Bluetooth,and Wi-Fi has become a severe problem in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical(ISM)***,low power and lossy networks are vulnerable to the signal interferences from other aggressive wireless networks when they perform low power operations to conserve the energy *** paper presents CoSense,which accurately detects ZigBee signals with a reliable signal correlation scheme in the presence of the *** key concept of CoSense is to reduce false wake-ups of low power listening(LPL)by identifying the pre-defined ZigBee *** scheme is robust in the coexistence environment of diverse wireless technologies since the signal correlation works well in bad wireless channel *** achieves standard compliance and transparency without any hardware and firmware *** have implemented CoSense on the Universal Software Radio Peripheral(USRP)platform to verify its *** experimental exploration reveals that CoSense significantly reduces the false-positive and false-negative rate under typical setting and the additional overhead is *** results show that our scheme saves much energy by up to 63%in dynamic network interference scenarios where low-power ZigBee transmissions are overwhelmed by strong Wi-Fi signal interferences.
