Nutritional Screening in a University Hospital:comparison between Oncologic and Non-Oncologic Patients

Background & Aims: We compared the screening nutritional data of patients with malignant and non-malignant disease, and classified their nutritional risk according to the primary tumor’s site. Methods: Subjective Global Assessment was applied to 3008 patients within 48 h of admission to a public university. Subjects were divided into Oncologic Group (n = 576) or Non-Oncologic Group (n = 2432) according to the presence of neoplasms or other diseases respectively. These data were compared by the t-student test and classic chi-square test, with statistical significance set at p cologic Group presented a higher prevalence of weight loss (60.3% vs. 49.3%), quantitative (40.7% vs. 28.5%) and qualitative (16.4% vs. 7.6%) alterations in the food intake pattern, gastrointestinal symptoms and muscle waste (23.2% vs. 13.2%) as compared to the Non-Oncologic Group. Also, there was a higher prevalence of nutritional disturbances in the Oncologic Group, with 49.5% of the subjects moderately (or suspected to be malnourished) and 12.7% severely mal-nourished. Severe malnourishment was mainly observed in patients with head and neck (25%), upper digestive tract (21.9%) and soft tissue and bones (17.9%) tumors. conclusion: When compared to other hospitalized patients, patients with neoplastic disease were in higher nutritional risk.

Neuroimaging in atypical normal tension glaucoma:debating routine implementation in the absence of classic neurological findings

●AIM:To assess the necessity of neuroimaging in patients with neurological or atypical findings of normal tension glaucoma(NTG)who do not exhibit typical glaucoma manifestations.●METHODS:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 90 atypical NTG patients who underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)due to atypical *** demographic characteristics,clinical parameters,and radiological findings were recorded.●RESULTS:Among the patients,66.7%had abnormal radiology results,with the most common findings being gliosis(34.4%),sequelae of cerebrovascular events and vascular malformations(14.4%),and benign intracranial mass lesions(11%).Non-glaucomatous visual field defects were more frequently observed in patients with abnormal neuroimaging ***,there were no significant differences in intraocular pressure,optic disc parameters,retinal nerve fiber layer thickness,and visual field indices between patients with normal and abnormal radiological *** mean age of the patients was ***,there was a significant age difference,with the abnormal radiology group having a higher median age(P=0.021).●cONcLUSION:The study highlights the importance of cranial imaging in older NTG patients to detect underlying pathologies and prevent *** suggests that neuroimaging may be warranted in NTG patients with atypical visual field defects incompatible with ***,routine neuroimaging in all NTG patients without classic neurological signs may not be necessary.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling disease that can affect 6% to 12% of the adult population and more than a third of people over 65 years of age. Purpose: To assess whether a group of people with hand osteoarthritis (hOA) who received different types of treatment improved their function after two years of follow-up. Method: The entire sample (n = 97) underwent three follow-up assessments regarding anthropometric parameters of the upper limbs and ability to perform functional activities. Subsequently, the sample was divided into two groups for the intervention periods, called the first Period (n = 73) and the Second Period (n = 24);the first Period kept the same protocol with orientations, and the Second Period went to an intervention with orientation strength exercises and use of orthosis. findings: In the separate analysis of the three questions of the DASH pain module, no differences were found between the assessment moments for groups of guidelines, treatment, or symptoms. Significant effects were observed for f(2, 162) = 3.5, p = 0.033, η2 = 0.04, and interaction for moments and intervention f(2, 162) = 4.3, p = 0.016, η2 = 0.05. Implications: It can be concluded that only guidance treatment does not benefit patients with hand osteoarthritis. In contrast, guidance, exercise, and orthosis treatment can significantly improve the disease.

Geological Genesis of Alkaline Magnesium-Type Groundwater within the Ophiolitic Rocks Areas in Southwestern Turkey

The groundwaters within the ophiolite nappes in the southwestern part of Turkey have different physical and geochemical characteristics and are divided into five different groundwater *** are(1) Mg-HcO_(3),(2) Mg-HcO_(3)-cO_(3),(3) Mg-cO_(3)-HcO_(3),(4) Na-ca-cl-cO_(3),and(5) ca-MgHcO_(3).The waters interact with ophiolites,mainly made up of basic-ultrabasic rocks,are characterized by alkaline and hyperalkaline *** waters have high Mg,HcO_(3)contents and Mg/ca ratio,and hyperalkaline water has high Na,ca contents,and low Mg/ca *** waters in the study area formed by the interaction of meteoric waters with variously serpentinized ultramafic rocks under low-temperature *** weathering is the main hydrogeochemical process that plays a role in the chemical composition of ***-HcO_(3)-type groundwaters are produced under open-system conditions with respect to cO_(2)due to meteoric water-serpentinized peridotite interactions in a shallow ***-seated groundwaters are Na-ca-cl-cO_(3)-type waters with high pH(TN-8 sample with p H 10.72),depleted in terms of Mg due to water-peridotite interaction under closed-system conditions with respect to cO_(2).Salda Lake with an alkaline character and high Mg and Na content is characterized by high evaporation and hydromagnesite deposition.

centralization and perceived control of cOVID-19 during the pandemic:A cross-sectional study

Objective:To uncover the impact of centralization of cOVID-19 and perceived control of cOVID-19 on society during the ***:We recruited a total of 1041 people in this cross-sectional *** data were collected using a questionnaire booklet covering demographics,a cOVID-19-related information form,the centrality of Event Scale,and the Perception of control of cOVID-19 *** utilized independent samples t-test,chi-square test,and one-way analysis of variance to analyze the ***:1041 questionnaires were collected and no questionnaire were excluded from our *** more than half of the participants(51.2%)stated that social isolation impaired public mental health,while 30.1%reported adverse impacts of the pandemic on their sleep *** with changes to their sleep patterns were found to centralize cOVID-19 ***,measures against cOVID-19 and constant announcements of the daily number of cases in the media brought both positive and negative effects on people and further contributed to the participants’centralization of *** with low centralization scores were concluded to perceive cOVID-19 as a minor *** professionals without a relative diagnosed with cOVID-19 and those satisfied with treatment opportunities had a higher perceived control of cOVID-19,while those who were not interested in statistical data on cOVID-19 and who had difficulty complying with the rules had a lower perceived control of ***,poorer perceived control of cOVID-19 was found to adversely affect sleep ***,healthcare professionals scored higher on the inevitability subscale of the Perception of control of cOVID-19 ***,among the participants,most cOVID-19 survivors thought cOVID-19 to be an avoidable ***:In addition to its physical impacts,cOVID-19 adversely impacts on mental health,and these effects are closely linked to a society’s centralization of cOVID-19 and p

Investigation of UV photosensor properties of Al-doped SnO_(2) thin films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating method

Transparent conducting aluminum doped tin oxide thin films were prepared by sol-gel dip coating method with differ-ent Al concentrations and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AfM), UV-Vis spectrophotometry and photoconductivity study. The variation observed in the properties of the measured films agrees with a difference in the film's thickness, which decreases when Al concentration augments. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that all films are polycrystal-line with tetragonal structure, (110) plane being the strongest diffraction peak. The crystallite size calculated by the Debye Scher-rer’s formula decreases from 11.92 to 8.54 nm when Al concentration increases from 0 to 5 wt.%. AfM images showed grains uni-formly distributed in the deposited films. An average transmittance greater than 80% was measured for the films and an en-ergy gap value of about 3.9 eV was deduced from the optical analysis. finally, the photosensitivity properties like current-voltage characteristics, ION/IOff ratio, growth and decay time are studied and reported. Also, we have calculated the trap depth energy using the decay portion of the rise and decay curve photocurrent.

cowpea Production challenges and contribution to Livelihood in Sub-Saharan Region

cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important grain legume mainly grown in tropical and subtropical regions for vegetables, grains, and fodder. The crop is grown predominantly in the dry savannahs to the Sahel in the fringes of the Sahara Desert where the annual rainfall is around 300 mm or less. cowpea provides shelter as a cover crop and improves soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Its grain is preferred for high levels of protein, energy, micro-and macronutrients. cowpea belongs to the family fabaceae and sub-family faboidea, and it is a self-pollinating crop with low and narrow genetic diversity, making it susceptible to various environmental factors. Various research projects have been established on cowpea, and as a result, various cowpea germplasm is stored at Africa International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)—Nigeria, the USDA repository in Griffin, GA (USA), the University of california, Riverside, cA (USA), and at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) in New Delhi, India. Despite the available germplasms, cowpea productivity remains very low in many countries due to a wide array of abiotic and biotic stresses and socio-economic constraints. This review summarizes some aspects of cowpea, including origin and history, challenges, economic importance, and constraints to production, providing possible useful information for cowpea researchers, agronomists, and producers in SSA.

Effect of long-term Helicobacter pylori infection on growth of children:a cohort study

Background:The effects of Helicobacter pylori(***)infection on growth are a controversial *** investigated the effects of long-term *** infection on height and weight in ***:A total of 200 children of 7-18 years old suffering from dyspeptic complaints were classified into two groups:*** positive and negative groups,*** the infection was impoved was followed up while performing urea breath test,and according to exposure time to the infection,the children were further divided into group 1(≤1.5 months),group 2(>1.5-≤6 months)and group 3(>6 months).Antropometric measurements were obtained and repeated every six ***:Mean growth velocity scores in the *** positive and negative groups were 0.49±3.85[95%confidence interval(cI):-0.21-1.18]and 1.98±4.42(95%cI:1-2.96),*** difference between both groups was statistically significant(P=0.012).Mean growth velocity scores in groups 1,2 and 3 were 0.96±3.84,0.16±4.51 and-0.85±3.09,*** growth velocity scores of group 3 were significantly lower than those of groups 0 and 1(P=0.005 and P=0.041).The mean weight scores in group 3 were similar to those in group 2,but the scores in group 3 were signifi cantly lower than those in group 1(-1.75±1.05,-1.21±1.37 and-0.88±1.49,respectively).conclusion:As the duration of exposure is prolonged in children with *** infection,the negative effect of the infection on both height and weight is evident.
