Nutritional Screening in a University Hospital:comparison between Oncologic and Non-Oncologic Patients

Background & Aims: We compared the screening nutritional data of patients with malignant and non-malignant disease, and classified their nutritional risk according to the primary tumor’s site. Methods: Subjective Global Assessment was applied to 3008 patients within 48 h of admission to a public university. Subjects were divided into Oncologic Group (n = 576) or Non-Oncologic Group (n = 2432) according to the presence of neoplasms or other diseases respectively. These data were compared by the t-student test and classic chi-square test, with statistical significance set at p cologic Group presented a higher prevalence of weight loss (60.3% vs. 49.3%), quantitative (40.7% vs. 28.5%) and qualitative (16.4% vs. 7.6%) alterations in the food intake pattern, gastrointestinal symptoms and muscle waste (23.2% vs. 13.2%) as compared to the Non-Oncologic Group. Also, there was a higher prevalence of nutritional disturbances in the Oncologic Group, with 49.5% of the subjects moderately (or suspected to be malnourished) and 12.7% severely mal-nourished. Severe malnourishment was mainly observed in patients with head and neck (25%), upper digestive tract (21.9%) and soft tissue and bones (17.9%) tumors. conclusion: When compared to other hospitalized patients, patients with neoplastic disease were in higher nutritional risk.

Geological Genesis of Alkaline Magnesium-Type Groundwater within the Ophiolitic Rocks Areas in Southwestern Turkey

The groundwaters within the ophiolite nappes in the southwestern part of Turkey have different physical and geochemical characteristics and are divided into five different groundwater *** are(1) Mg-HcO_(3),(2) Mg-HcO_(3)-cO_(3),(3) Mg-cO_(3)-HcO_(3),(4) Na-ca-cl-cO_(3),and(5) ca-MgHcO_(3).The waters interact with ophiolites,mainly made up of basic-ultrabasic rocks,are characterized by alkaline and hyperalkaline *** waters have high Mg,HcO_(3)contents and Mg/ca ratio,and hyperalkaline water has high Na,ca contents,and low Mg/ca *** waters in the study area formed by the interaction of meteoric waters with variously serpentinized ultramafic rocks under low-temperature *** weathering is the main hydrogeochemical process that plays a role in the chemical composition of ***-HcO_(3)-type groundwaters are produced under open-system conditions with respect to cO_(2)due to meteoric water-serpentinized peridotite interactions in a shallow ***-seated groundwaters are Na-ca-cl-cO_(3)-type waters with high pH(TN-8 sample with p H 10.72),depleted in terms of Mg due to water-peridotite interaction under closed-system conditions with respect to cO_(2).Salda Lake with an alkaline character and high Mg and Na content is characterized by high evaporation and hydromagnesite deposition.

Investigation of UV photosensor properties of Al-doped SnO_(2) thin films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating method

Transparent conducting aluminum doped tin oxide thin films were prepared by sol-gel dip coating method with differ-ent Al concentrations and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AfM), UV-Vis spectrophotometry and photoconductivity study. The variation observed in the properties of the measured films agrees with a difference in the film's thickness, which decreases when Al concentration augments. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that all films are polycrystal-line with tetragonal structure, (110) plane being the strongest diffraction peak. The crystallite size calculated by the Debye Scher-rer’s formula decreases from 11.92 to 8.54 nm when Al concentration increases from 0 to 5 wt.%. AfM images showed grains uni-formly distributed in the deposited films. An average transmittance greater than 80% was measured for the films and an en-ergy gap value of about 3.9 eV was deduced from the optical analysis. finally, the photosensitivity properties like current-voltage characteristics, ION/IOff ratio, growth and decay time are studied and reported. Also, we have calculated the trap depth energy using the decay portion of the rise and decay curve photocurrent.

Background:The effects of Helicobacter pylori(***)infection on growth are a controversial *** investigated the effects of long-term *** infection on height and weight in ***:A total of 200 children of 7-18 years old suffering from dyspeptic complaints were classified into two groups:*** positive and negative groups,*** the infection was impoved was followed up while performing urea breath test,and according to exposure time to the infection,the children were further divided into group 1(≤1.5 months),group 2(>1.5-≤6 months)and group 3(>6 months).Antropometric measurements were obtained and repeated every six ***:Mean growth velocity scores in the *** positive and negative groups were 0.49±3.85[95%confidence interval(cI):-0.21-1.18]and 1.98±4.42(95%cI:1-2.96),*** difference between both groups was statistically significant(P=0.012).Mean growth velocity scores in groups 1,2 and 3 were 0.96±3.84,0.16±4.51 and-0.85±3.09,*** growth velocity scores of group 3 were significantly lower than those of groups 0 and 1(P=0.005 and P=0.041).The mean weight scores in group 3 were similar to those in group 2,but the scores in group 3 were signifi cantly lower than those in group 1(-1.75±1.05,-1.21±1.37 and-0.88±1.49,respectively).conclusion:As the duration of exposure is prolonged in children with *** infection,the negative effect of the infection on both height and weight is evident.

Neuroimaging in atypical normal tension glaucoma:debating routine implementation in the absence of classic neurological findings

●AIM:To assess the necessity of neuroimaging in patients with neurological or atypical findings of normal tension glaucoma(NTG)who do not exhibit typical glaucoma manifestations.●METHODS:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 90 atypical NTG patients who underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)due to atypical *** demographic characteristics,clinical parameters,and radiological findings were recorded.●RESULTS:Among the patients,66.7%had abnormal radiology results,with the most common findings being gliosis(34.4%),sequelae of cerebrovascular events and vascular malformations(14.4%),and benign intracranial mass lesions(11%).Non-glaucomatous visual field defects were more frequently observed in patients with abnormal neuroimaging ***,there were no significant differences in intraocular pressure,optic disc parameters,retinal nerve fiber layer thickness,and visual field indices between patients with normal and abnormal radiological *** mean age of the patients was ***,there was a significant age difference,with the abnormal radiology group having a higher median age(P=0.021).●cONcLUSION:The study highlights the importance of cranial imaging in older NTG patients to detect underlying pathologies and prevent *** suggests that neuroimaging may be warranted in NTG patients with atypical visual field defects incompatible with ***,routine neuroimaging in all NTG patients without classic neurological signs may not be necessary.

OBJEcTIVE:To evaluate the sternocleidomastoid and the descending portion of the trapezius muscles in terms of electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold in women with chronic cervical pain after acupuncture ***:Twenty-five women,aged 18-50 years[(31±3)years],with chronic neck and temporomandibular disorder participated in the *** electromyographic activity of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the descending portion of the trapezius muscle were recorded at rest,during shoulder elevation,(left and right)rotation of the neck and crucifix *** voluntary contraction was used to normalize the electromyographic activity *** points used for acupuncture were Jiache(ST 6),Xiaguan(ST 7),Quanliao(SI 18),Tinggong(SI 19),Yifeng(TE-17),fengchi(GB 20),Renzhong(GV 26),Yangbai(GB-14),and points of the lower and upper limbs:Tai chong(LV 3),Zusanli(ST 36),Sanyinjiao(SP 6),Kunlun(BL 60),He Gu(LI4)and Yanglingquan(GB 34).The treatment course was 10 sessions,30 min long per session,and twice a *** final electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold data collection were performed 15 d after treatment ***:The normalized electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold data were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis using t-test(Pficant difference was observed during shoulder elevation for the left trapezius muscle,during neck rotation from the right side to the left,and pressure pain threshold for the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles,bilaterally,after the acupuncture ***:The acupuncture treatment improved the neck muscles in terms of electromyographic activity and increased the tolerance to chronic pain in women.

Actinic keratosis and field cancerization

While actinic keratoses(AKs) have been considered precancerous until recently for being able to turn into squamous cell carcinomas(Sccs), it is now agreed that it would be more appropriate to call them cancerous. Although not all AKs turn into Scc and some of them may even have a spontaneous regression, there is an obvious association between Scc and AK. Approximately 90% of Scs have been reported to develop from AKs and AKs are the preinvasive form of Sccs. The presence of two or more AKs on a photodamaged skin is an indicator of field cancerization and represents an increased risk of invasive Scc. All lesions should be treated since it cannot be foreseen which of the lesions will regress and which will progress to Scc. AK can be a single lesion or it can involve multiple lesions in a field of cancerization; thus, AK treatment is grouped under two headings:(1) Lesion-specific treatment; and (2) field-targeted treatment. Lesion-specific treatments are practicable in patients with a small number of clinically visible and isolated lesions. These treatments including cryotherapy, surgical excision, shave excision, curettage and laser are based on physical destruction of the visible lesions. field-targeted treatments are effective in the treatment of visible lesions, subclinical lesions and keratinocyte changes in the areas surrounding the visible lesions. field targeted treatment options are topical imiquimod cream, 5% 5-fluorouracil cream, ingenol mebutate, diclofenac gel, resimiquimod and photodynamic therapy.
