Pulsed-Laser Annealing of NiTi Shape Memory Alloy Thin Film

Local annealing of amorphous NiTi thin films was performed by using an Nd：YAG 1064 nm wavelength pulsed laser beam. Raw samples produced by simultaneous sputter deposition from elemental Ni and Ti targets onto unheated Si （100） and Silica （111） substrates were used for annealing. Delicate treatment with 15.92 W/mm^2 power density resulted in crystallization of small spots; while 16.52 and 17.51 W/mm^2 power densities caused ablation of the amorphous layer. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were performed to characterize the microstructure and surface morphology of the amorphous/crystallized spot patterns.

Electronic and optical properties are obtained with the increase in indium alloy content（x）in a Ga1-xInxN/Al0.2Ga0.8N quantum *** barrier height with the different In alloy contents is applied to acquire the confinement *** results are obtained taking into consideration geometrical confinement *** optical absorption coefficient with the photon energy is observed in a Ga（1-x）InxN/Al0.2Ga0.8N quantum *** optical output with the injection current density and the threshold optical pump intensity for various In alloy contents are *** differential gain as functions of indium alloy content,charge density and the dot radii in the Ga1-xInxN/Al0.2Ga0.8N quantum dot are *** exciton binding energy is calculated in order to obtain the exciton density,the optical gain and the threshold current density in the Ga1-xInxN/Al0.2Ga0.8N quantum *** results show that the red shift energy with an increase in In alloy content is found and the differential gain increases with the charge carrier density.

On the role of the constitutive model and basal texture on the mechanical behaviour of magnesium alloy AZ31B sheet

The recently developed elastic-viscoplastic self-consistent model with various self-consistent schemes was applied to study the effect of basal texture on the mechanical behavior of magnesium alloy AZ31B sheet. The influence of the basal texture was investigated using various initial textures generated by artificially tilting the measured texture of the reference AZ31B sheet around in a transverse direction. The material parameters for the various models were fitted to experimental uniaxial tension and compression along the rolling direction and were then used to study the effects of the basal texture on the yield stress, R value, ultimate stress and uniform strain under uniaxial tension. The effect of the basal texture on sheet metal forming was further assessed by calculating the limit strain under in-plane plane strain tension. An assessment of the predictive capability of polycrystal plasticity models was made based on comparisons of predictions and experimental observations. Among the available self-consistent approaches, the Affine self-consistent scheme resulted in the best overall performance.

One-hundred years have passed since the original description of the commonly described phenomenon of persistent abdominal symptoms being triggered by an acute enteric infection. This first account was generated out of astute observations by Sir Arthur Hurst in World War I. Additional descriptions followed from military and non-military practitioners adding the evidence which has transitioned this recognized condition from association to causation. While mechanistic understanding is an area of active pursuit, this historical accounting of a centuries progress highlights important advances and contributions of military medicine and scientists to advances benefiting global populations.

Computational Identification of miRNAs and Their Target Genes from Expressed Sequence Tags of Tea(Camellia sinensis)

MicroRNAs （miRNAs） are a newly identified class of small non-protein-coding post-transcriptional regulatory RNA in both plants and animals. The use of computational homology based search for expressed sequence tags （ESTs） with the Ambros empirical formula and other structural feature criteria filter is a suitable combination towards the discovery and isolation of conserved miRNAs from tea and other plant species whose genomes are not yet sequenced. In the present study, we blasted the database of tea （Camellia sinensis） ESTs to search for potential miRNAs, using previously known plant miRNAs. For the first time, four candidate miRNAs from four families were identified in tea. Using the newly identified miRNA sequences, a total of 30 potential target genes were identified for 11 miRNA families; 6 of these predicted target genes encode transcription factors （20%）, 16 target genes appear to play roles in diverse physiological processes （53%） and 8 target genes have hypothetical or unknown functions （27%）. These findings considerably broaden the scope of understanding the functions of miRNA in tea.

Muon spin relaxation/rotation(μSR) is a vital technique for probing the superconducting gap structure, pairing symmetry and time reversal symmetry breaking, enabling an understanding of the mechanisms behind the unconventional superconductivity of cuprates and Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, which remain a puzzle. Very recently double layered Fe-based superconductors having quasi-2 D crystal structures and Cr-based superconductors with a quasi-1D structure have drawn considerable attention. Here we present a brief review of the characteristics of a few selected Fe-and Cr-based superconducting materials and highlight some of the major outstanding problems, with an emphasis on the superconducting pairing symmetries of these materials. We focus on μSR studies of the newly discovered superconductors ACa_2Fe_4As_4F_2(A = k, Rb, and Cs), ThFeAsN, and A_2Cr_3As_3(A = k, Cs), which were used to determine the superconducting gap structures, the presence of spin fluctuations, and to search for time reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting states. We also briefly discuss the results of μSR investigations of the superconductivity in hole and electron doped BaFe_2As_2.

A novel power system reconfiguration for a distribution system with minimum load balancing index using bacterial foraging optimization algorithm

In this paper, the objective of minimum load balancing index （LBI） for the 16-bus distribution system is achieved using bacterial foraging optimization algorithm （BFOA）. The feeder reconfiguration problem is formulated as a non-linear optimization problem and the optimal solution is obtained using BFOA. With the proposed reconfiguration method, the radial structure of the distribution system is retained and the burden on the optimization technique is reduced. Test results are presented for the 16-bus sample network, the proposed reconfiguration method has effectively decreased the LBI, and the BFOA technique is efficient in searching for the optimal solution.

Grain Size Distribution and Interfacial Heat Transfer Coefficient during Solidification of Magnesium Alloys Using High Pressure Die Casting Process

The objective of this study is to predict grain size and heat transfer coefficient at the metal-die interface during high pressure die casting process and solidification of the magnesium alloy AM60. Multiple runs of the commercial casting simulation package, ProCASTTM, were used to model the mold filling and solidification events employing a range of interfacial heat transfer coefficient values. The simulation results were used to estimate the centerline cooling curve at various locations through the casting. The centerline cooling curves, together with the die temperature and the thermodynamic properties of the alloy, were then used as inputs to compute the solution to the Stefan problem of a moving phase boundary, thereby providing the through-thickness cooling curves at each chosen location of the casting, Finally, the local cooling rate was used to calculate the resulting grain size via previously established relationships. The effects of die temperature, filling time and heat transfer coefficient on the grain structure in skin region and core region were quantitatively characterized. It was observed that the grain size of skin region strongly depends on above three factors whereas the grain size of core region shows dependence on the interracial heat transfer coefficient and thickness of the samples. The grain size distribution from surface to center was estimated from the relationship between grain size and the predicted cooling rate. The prediction of grain size matches well with experimental results. A comparison of the predicted and experimentally determined grain size profiles enables the determination of the apparent interracial heat transfer coefficient for different locations.
