Evaluation of asphalt mixture behavior incorporating warm mix additives and reclaimed asphalt pavement

Incorporation of warm mix asphalt （WMA） and reclaimed asphalt pavement （RAP） has benefited the asphalt industry in many ways such as reducing the demand for virgin materials, lowering energy requirement during the asphalt production and construction, in addition to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. This study evaluated the effects of Evotherm and RH-WMA and RAP on mixtures＇ behavior in terms of the compaction energy index （CEI）, indirect tensile strength （ITS） and resilient modulus. The results showed that warm mix additives reduced the CEI, ITS and resilient modulus; while RAP increased the corresponding values. Statistical analysis showed that mixtures incorporating Evotherm and RAP had significant effects on CEI, while the effects of RH-WMA on the corresponding value were found to be statistically insignificant. General Linear Model showed that Evotherm, RAP and RH-WMA exhibited no significant effects on the ITS and resilient modulus. The one-way analysis of variance showed that Evotherm influenced mixture behavior significantly, while RAP and RH-WMA effects were found to be statistically insignificant. Regression equations with high accuracy levels were proposed to predict CEI, ITS and resilient modulus with respect to modification of mixture variables such as mix constituents （Evotherm, RH-WMA, and RAP） and compaction temperature.

Due to their excellent dielectric properties and the rapid response to microwave irradiation,silicon carbide nanowhiskers(SiCNWs)were employed as microwave susceptor in this study to absorb microwave and locally melt the surrounding polypropylene(PP)substrates for the joining of PP *** welded joint is formed after the melted PP was cooled and *** than microwave susceptor,SiCNWs also acted as the nanofillers in strengthening the welded joint through the formation of SiCNWs reinforced PP nanocomposite at the interface of PP ***,the effect of microwave power on the microwave welding of PP substrates using SiCNWs as susceptor was studied and *** was found that the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of the welded joint improved as microwave power ***,it deteriorates the flexibility of the welded joint as high stiffness SiCNWs were incorporated deeper into the PP matrix which restricted the PP chain *** from microwave power,clamping pressure is also critical in determining the mechanical properties of a welded *** compared to unclamped welded joint,the tensile strength,modulus of elasticity and flexibility of welded joint subjected to clamping pressure improved ***,the tensile strength of welded joint increased when the clamping pressure was increased from P1 to P3,but decreased when the clamping pressure was further increased to P4 due to the occurrence of flashing at welded *** formation mechanism of SiCNWs reinforced PP welded joint was also proposed in this *** to conventional welding,this welding process is easy,straightforward and is able to produce welded joint with outstanding mechanical properties via precise controlling of the processing ***,microwave welding is thought to offer an option for the joining of thermoplastics and other applications.

Traumatic optic neuropathy secondary to acupuncture treatment for glaucoma: A case report

Internal organ injuries have been recognized as a major complication of acupuncture. Reported ocular adverse events include traumatic cataract, oculomotor nerve injury, endophthalmitis and retinal puncture. We report a case of traumatic optic neuropathy and self-sealed globe perforation following acupuncture. A Chinese gentleman with primary open angle glaucoma presented with sudden loss of vision in the right eye after acupuncture therapy. The vision dropped to 2/60 from 6/6 premorbid. Relative afferent pupillary defect was present. Fundus examination showed hemorrhage from the optic disc into the vitreous. It is likely that the optic nerve injury occurred when the acupuncture needle was advanced deep into locations near the optic nerve. Main acupoints used in acupuncture treatment of glaucoma include Tongziliao GB-1, Jingming BL-1 and Chengqi ST-1. It is crucial to have a good understanding of ocular anatomy to avoid potentially blinding complications.
