The relationship between sleep condition and autonomic nervous function in women in their 70s with type 2 diabetes mellitus

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep condition and autonomic nervous function of women in their 70s with type 2 diabetes mellitus by analyzing the activity counts (AC) on actigraphs and heart rate variability (HRV). Ten healthy women in their 30s to 40s as control and four women patients with type 2 diabetes in their 70s wore the electrocardiograph and an actigraph for 24 hours while keeping a diary of activities, including their sleep and food intake. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess subjective sleep conditions. The subjective sleeping results were significantly correlated with those measured by the AC and HRV. However, AC and HRV correlation pattern showed different activity in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The quality of sleep of those with chronic diabetes was not good even if their HbA1c was well controlled. Furthermore, their automatic nervous function was different from the control group. The sleeping hours of patients with type 2 diabetes were shorter or longer than those of healthy women. Ultimately, this study maintains that it is important to examine automatic nervous functions using objective examination index during the early stage of diabetes mellitus.

Water Absorption and Degraded Stress Relaxation Behavior in Water-Borne Anticorrosive Urethane/Epoxy Coatings

The kinetics of water absorption in water-borne anticorrosive urethane/epoxy coatings, which were actually introduced in the industrial field, are studied. It is found that the high water affinity of a water-borne coating supports a higher saturated water content, Mχ, and helps to facilitate absorption D. The three parameters of stretched exponential function called the William-Watt equation, Eo, τ, and β, are determined to fit the degraded stress relaxation behavior in the water absorption process because this function quantitatively describes the relaxing ability and has been successfully used by a number of researchers. An increasing in the water content is shown to correlate strongly with a decrease in Eo and fl early in the absorption process between Mt/M（χ） = 0 and Mt/Mχ≈ 0.5. The adhesive characteristics of the coatings are correlated with water content, and shown to exhibit higher cohesive failure in coating epoxies under saturated conditions. This suggests that water interferes with the intermolecular bonding between polymer chains which degrades the bulk materials ability to diffuse stress concentrations and reduces its overall strength.

Liver cirrhosis induced by long-term administration of a daily low dose of amiodarone: A case report

The anti-arrhythmic agent amiodarone （AD） is associated with numerous adverse effects, but serious liver disease is rare. The improved safety of administration of daily low doses of AD has already been established and this regimen is used for long-term medication. Nevertheless, asymptomatic continuous liver injury by AD may increase the risk of step-wise progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We present an autopsy case of AD-induced liver cirrhosis in a patient who had been treated with a low dose of AD （200 rag/d） daily for 84 too. The patient was a 85-year-old male with a history of ischemic heart disease. Seven years after initiation of treatment with AD, he was admitted with cardiac congestion. The total dose of AD was 528 g. Mild elevation of serum aminotransferase and hepatomegaly were present. Liver biopsy specimens revealed cirrhosis, and under electron microscopy numerous lysosomes with electron-dense, whorled, lamellar inclusions characteristic of a secondary phospholipidosis were observed. Initially, withdrawal of AD led to a slight improvement of serum aminotransferase levels, but unfortunately his general condition deteriorated and he died from complications of pneumonia and renal failure. Long-term administration of daily low doses of AD carries the risk of progression to irreversible liver injury. Therefore, periodic examination of liver function and/or liver biopsy is required for the management of patients receiving long-term treatment with AD.

Atypical Calcified Ganglioglioma: A Rare Case Report

Considered rare tumors, gangliogliomas account for 0.4% - 0.9% of intracranial neoplasms. The peak of its incidence occurs between 10 and 20 years of age. These tumors are composed of glial and ganglion cells and they are relatively low-grade neoplasms associated with good prognoses. We report a case of an atypical calcified ganglioglioma in an 18-year-old woman with history of four months of stabbing right-sided parietal headache, paroxysmal. On image studies were noted the presence of thick wall calcification in gangliogliomas. Although rare, this atypical ganglioglioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions occurring in this area of the brain.

The utilization of solar energy which is clean and abundant for building’s application is a novel approach in minimizing, if not totally solving, the problems concerning building’s conventional energy consumption. In the present study, solar energy is converted to thermal energy for the year-round operation of solar electric and thermal storage system for the operation of desiccant dehumidification and evaporative cooling system for summer operation, and hot water production for the winter season. The combined system is installed at the experimental building of the Laboratory of Building Environmental Engineering of Tohoku University. The whole set up consisted of the solar electric and thermal storage system, desiccant dehumidification and evaporative cooling system, and the controlled experimental facility. Initial measurements and evaluation were taken with some results needed for system analysis. Based on the initial results, the solar collector was performing to its expectation and the thermal energy storage thermal losses were minimal. Results of the desiccant dehumidification and cooling system showed that the system needed refinements to enhance the increase of its cooling load performance.

Building consumes large amount of energy for its operation. At present, maintenance of indoor artificially controlled environment contributes to the higher building energy consumption and environmental problems. Sorption based cooling system is an alternative device for the maintenance of indoor thermal comfort condition that operates using alternative energy sources and harmless working substances to lessen the impact of building energy consumption and environmental problem. Sorption wheel is the most important component of the sorption based cooling system and the performance of the whole system depends on it. Experimental studies had been conducted on the performance evaluation of the sorption processes based on important parameters such as of regeneration temperature, flow rates and rotational speed for practical performance evaluation. Evaluation of the energy consumption of the system has been done when sensible wheel is in tandem operation with the sorption wheel.

随着无线信道容量的增加和服务面的扩大,愈来愈需要适用于无线模拟音频信道的话音保密通信系统。现用于无线通信系统的模拟频谱倒置,对防止窃听和保证安全是适用的,但由于它的音质下降不可避免,使应用受到了限制。已经证明,用只改变取样数据的符号来完成数字谱的倒置,还避免了失真。数字倒置理论上是由离散的付氏变换推演而来,并已为实验证明。从频谱倒置的观点来讨论孔径效应。用异或门和一个二进制计数器来实现数字频谱倒置。这些电路可以很容易集成在一个大规模集成电路(LSI)蕊片上,以避免元件值的差异。在0.3-3.7kHz的频带内,用8kHz取样速率的数字处理得到的信噪比大于50db,失真小于-50db。

随着优质可靠服务需求的提高,发展设计高可靠性道路网络的方法成为一个急迫的课题.本文建立了一个新的分析连续道路网络设计问题的双层规划模型,其上层模型是最大化的路网整体畅通可靠性和路网扩张率的差值,其下层模型是随机用户均衡交通量分配.通过Hooke-Jeeves算法解算这个模型,得到了一组优化的路段通行能力扩张值.结果表明,该双层规划模型是设计高可靠性道路网络的有效工具.
