A surface modification of diamond with manganese powder was attempted to make a magnetic functional surface for handling diamond. Manganese carbide, Mn7C3, was formed on diamond (110) by near-infrared radiation heating, resulting in a layered material with suppressing formation of Mn5C2. Investigated by a Hall-effect sensor, the magnetic flux density on the modified diamond surface showed ferromagnetic properties.

Objective: This study presents the microvasculature of the horse iris, ciliary process, retina, and choroid and discusses the functional significance of the vasculature. Procedure: Seven horses were used for this study. The ocular vascular system was injected with methylmethacrylate resin via the carotid artery, and the vascular corrosion casts were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Results: The iridial vessels showed a wavy course. The ciliary process was supplied by 2 arterial routes: the iridial and ciliary arterial circles. The subjects displayed a paurangiotic retina with retinal vessels extending only a short distance around the disc. The retinal arterioles and venules ran in closely related pairs, and the capillaries formed hairpin loops. No central retinal artery was seen in the equine eyes examined. The choriocapillaris in the avascular retina was arranged in honeycomb hexagon lobules and formed a more densely packed network than that in the vascular retina. There were 2 distinct venous drainage systems in the horse choroid: the vortex veins and the posterior ciliary veins. The vortex vein ampulla was flattened and showed a slit-like lumen at the merge site with the ophthalmic vein. The vortex veins demonstrated a marked constriction before leaving the eye. Discussion: The 2 choroidal drainage systems may compensate each other in event of occlusion. The ampulla and the constriction in the vortex veins may act as a valve regulating the blood flow to keep the eye at an optimum size and the intraocular pressure within the normal physiological range.

Fundamental Study of High Step-down Non-isolated Multicellular DC-DC Converter for Future DC Distribution Systems

Based on a detailed analysis of satellite imagery combined with field geologic and geomorphic observations, we have mapped late Cenozoic folds and faults in the northeastern Pamir-Tian Shan convergence *** is a unique example to understand intracontinental ongoing mountain building within India-Eurasia collision *** the front of northeastern Pamir,our investigations reveal that the NW-WNW-trending folds display a right-stepping en echelon pattern and NW-WNW-striking faults are mainly characterized by south-dipping thrusts with an extensive dextral strike-slip *** systems across the active faults show a systematic right-lateral *** contrast,structural style of the ENE trending fold-and-thrust belts are predominated by south-north directed shortening southwest of the Tian *** results also infer that oblique thrusting accommodates as long-term dextral slip rate of ca.4.0 mm/yr during the late Cenozoic time north of the Pamir topographic ***-stratigraphic evidence suggests that the tectonic deformation was initiated at ca.3-5 Ma in the study *** suggest that intracontinental mountain building in the Pamir-Tian Shan convergence zone should be attributed to the crustal shortening caused by folding and thrusting as well as block rotation related to strike-slip faulting within the India-Eurasia collision system.

A novel high step-down non-isolated DC-DC converter has been proposed. The proposed converter consists of highly efficient non-isolated cell converters using bidirectional semiconductor power devices, and these cell converters are connected in ISOP （input series and output parallel）. The non-isolated ISOP converter achieves high step-down ratio of D/N, operating N cell converters under the duty ratio olD. Availability of the proposed converter has been shown by developing the 48 V-12 V laboratory prototype using two 24 V-12 V cell converters. Design consideration for the 48 V-3 V multicellular converter using four 12 V-3 V cell converters has been also conducted, and the potential to approach the efficiency of 97% has been discussed. The proposed topology is suitable for the POL （point of load） converters in the highly efficient next generation DC distribution system for data centers.

Seepage from hydrocarbon reservoirs can cause a number of chemical and/or mineralogical changes in overlying rocks and *** surface changes can be detected by remote sensing imaging *** Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer(ASTER) is an advanced multispectral imaging system in the visible and near infrared(VNIR) to shortwave infrared(SWIR) *** ratios of ASTER VNIR and SWIR data to detect red bed bleaching and secondary carbonate formation induced by hydrocarbon seepage are proposed through analysis of the spectral properties of rock *** show that ASTER band ratios of 2/1 and 4/8 can discriminate bleached red beds and secondary carbonate minerals due to hydrocarbon seepage in the northern Tian Shan. They are in good agreement with mineral identification using X-ray *** ratio technique derived from ASTER data may provide a potential approach for hydrocarbon exploration in areas with sparse vegetation cover.

A 29-year-old nurse with a hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection caused by needle-stick injury was treated with interferon-beta starting about one year after the onset of acute hepatitis. The patient developed acute hepatitis C with symptoms of general fatigues, jaundice, and ascites 4 wk after the needle-stick injury. When these symptoms were presented, the patient was pregnant by artificial insemination. She hoped to continue her pregnancy. After delivery, biochemical liver enzyme returned to normal levels. Nevertheless, HCV RNA was positive and the pathological finding indicated a progression to chronicity. The genotype was lb with low viral load. Daily intravenous injection of interferon-beta at the dosage of six million units was started and continued for eight weeks. HCV was eradicated without severe adverse effects. In acute hepatitis C, delaying therapy is considered to reduce the efficacy but interferon-beta therapy is one of the useful treatments for hepatitis C infection in chronic phase.

The microvasculature of footpads in the dog and domestic cat was investigated using histology and scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts. Methylmethacrylate resin vascular casts for scanning electron microscopy, Indian ink injected whole mount and histological specimens were each prepared, in a series of 16 limbs of 4 adult dogs and 12 limbs of 3 adult domestic cats. The network of blood vessels in the dog paw pad appears to have an intricate pattern, especially with regard to venous outflow forming a peri-arterial venous network. Numerous arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) were found in the canine dermis. While, that of the domestic cat had less complex vascular pattern in the footpad without the peri-arterial venous network. AVAs were observed sporadically in the feline dermis. The peri-arterial venous network in the paw pad formed a countercurrent heat exchanger in dogs. When the foot pad is exposed to a cold environment in dogs, the countercurrent heat exchanger serves to prevent heat loss by re-circulating heat back to the body core, adopting an inhospitable environment. AVAs also play a role in regulating the body temperature. A lack of the peri-arterial venous network and few AVAs appear to make felines more prone to suffer from a cold condition than canines.

利用计算机控制扫描电镜技术(Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy,CCSEM)研究了煤中矿物特性及其在燃烧过程中的转化行为。结果表明原煤中矿物主要为粘土和黄铁矿,且主要以外在矿物的形式存在,粒径多在10μm以上,而内在矿物绝大部分小于10μm。不同矿物具有不同的粒径分布和内在/外在特性,显示煤中矿物分布的非均一性。煤灰主要由莫来石、铁、钙和钠的铝硅酸盐组成。通过K、Fe、Ca和Na在原煤及其产物所含矿物中的质量分布对比,揭示了它们在燃烧过程中的转化行为。煤灰粒径的变大是矿物颗粒熔融聚合的结果。

More efficient induction of genotoxicity by high-LET Fe-particle radiation than low-LET X-ray radiation at low doses

Objective:To understand differential effects on induction of genotoxicity and genomic instability(GI)by high-LET particle radiation and low-LET photon radiation,based on ground-based experiments using total body irradiation(TBI)of mice with Fe-particle radiation and X-ray ***:TBI was delivered to C57BL/6J Jms strain female mice of 8 weeks old at a dose ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 Gy of Fe-particle radiation or at a dose ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 Gy of X-ray *** of genotoxicity and GI by TBI was determined respectively at 1 and 2 months after exposure using frequency of micronuclei in bone marrow erythrocytes as the *** of bone marrow cell proliferation by TBI was measured as reduced *** conditions were also ***:TBI,regardless of the type of radiation,caused statistically significant increase in genotoxicity at 1 month after exposure,but did not induce GI at 2 months after exposure even at higher doses(>1.0 Gy).The doseresponse curve for the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes induced by Fe-particle radiation and X-ray radiation was y=0.7798 t 1.7889x–0.5978x^(2)(R^(2)=0.8109)and y=0.7421 t 1.3792x–0.2588 x^(2)(R^(2)=0.8081),*** dose-response curve for the frequency of micronucleated normochromatic erythrocytes induced by Fe-particle radiation and X-ray radiation was y=0.7191 t 1.4545x–0.4978x^(2)(R^(2)=0.7047)and y=0.658 t 1.344x–0.2531x^(2)(R^(2)=0.7853),*** general,high-LET Fe-particle radiation was more efficient in inducing genotoxicity than low-LET X-ray radiation at lower doses(<0.5 Gy).Conclusions:These results further confirm that exposure to TBI,even at higher doses and regardless the type of radiation,does not induce GI in C57BL/6J strain mice measured as increased micronuclei in bone marrow *** findings indicate that radiation-induced GI is mouse strain dependent and suggest that more comprehensive studies should be

FactSage has been used to predict the ash behavior and ash fusion temperature (AFT) at high temperature under reducing atmosphere conditions. For Huainan coal ash samples, it has demonstrated a good agreement between the liquid phase formation as the function of temperature and the tested AFT. The tested and predicted flow temperature (FT) for two typical Huainan coal ashes with the addition of CaO flux are quite fit with the maximum temperature difference less than 74 ℃ which is within acceptable range. It can be concluded that FactSage in combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD) can be used to predict the reactions occurring between minerals, as well as the mineral transformation and slag formation. This is probably an improved way to interpret melting properties of mineral matter in coal and assist in quantifying slag formation in gasifier operation.
