The aim of this investigation was to improve power performance of Savonius hydraulic turbine utilizing small stream for electric *** attempt was made to increase the power coefficient of runner by the use of flat shield plate placed upstream of the *** difference of the power coefficient is discussed in relation to clearance between the runner and the bottom wall and the rotation direction of the *** flow field around the runner was also examined visually to clarify influences of setting conditions on the power *** this study it was found that the power coefficient is achieved for 0.47 by only using a flat shield plate,the increase is up to 80% over the runner without the ***,it is the proper condition that clearance ratio is 0.73 in this study.

To clarify the characteristics of gas flow in high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray gun, aerodynamic research is performed using a special gun. The gun has rectangular cross-sectional area and sidewalls of optical glass to visualize the internal flow. The gun consists of a supersonic nozzle with the design Mach number of 2.0 followed by a straight passage called barrel. Compressed dry air up to 0.78 MPa is used as a process gas instead of combustion gas which is used in a commercial HVOF gun. The high-speed gas flows with shock waves in the gun and jets are visualized by schlieren technique. Complicated internal and external flow-fields containing various types of shock wave as well as expansion wave are visualized.

An Emergent Framework of Disaster Risk Governance towards Innovating Coping Capability for Reducing Disaster Risks in Local Communities

An emergent framework of disaster risk governance is presented as an implementation strategy for integrated risk management that incorporates innovative local coping capabilities that reduce disaster vulnerability. This framework calls for enhancement of self-support and mutualassistance through strengthening informal or social networking efforts in local communities, rather than depending on formal or institutional governmental-assistance. The framework is supported by a societal platform of disaster risk information, called DRIP, which the NIED(National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, Japan) has developed since 2006 as a tool that promotes improved disaster risk governance. With the help of DRIP, residents, communities, and other stakeholders, linked horizontally or vertically with social networks, can(1) improve their awareness of disaster risks and management issues by sharing risk information as scientific expertise, experiential knowledge, and local/folk wisdom;(2) customize risk communication through analytic deliberation of risk information by employing risk-scenarios developed by residents themselves;(3) develo p collaborative activities for informed decision-making that can fully utilize local resources to reorganize coping capability against disaster risks;and(4) disseminate the generated risk scenarios with action plans to other residents who have not participated in the risk communication process.

Hydraulic model tests for propagation of flow and sediment in floods due to breaking of a natural landslide dam during a mountainous torrent

During mountain torrents, large-magnitude floods may result from heavy rainfall and cause the breakage of landslide dams naturally formed by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, and so on. The characteristics of longitudinal spreading of clear water discharge and changes in flow depth must be clarified because the changes in peak depth have not yet been examined in steep-slope torrents and because there are few data on spreading of flash floods and related sedimentation in mountainous torrents. In the present study, experimental data were collected through hydraulic model tests over a rigid bed, and the spreading of water, fine sediment, bed load, and large boulders due to flooding are discussed assuming that flash flooding/debris flows occur in the upstream reach. The effects of changes in flow width, such as expansions and contractions in the flow width, as well as changes in meandering channels, sediment transportation, and spreading flow depth resulting from bores are examined using flume data for a steepslope torrent. The data obtained in the present study reveal that fine sediment components are transported to the downstream reach if large-magnitude floods occur and that the spreading rate and peak lags of the fine sediment and water level indicate the occurrence of a flood in the upstream reach.

Sustainable Campus Initiative at Keio University after the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster

After the shock of the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, the issue of local sustainability is presently center stage in the Japanese political process, and educational and research values are imperative for long-term cost savings, risk management, and clean, efficient energy generation. This study illustrates the Sustainable Campus Initiative approach at Keio University that students have been undertaking to make the campus more sustainable and resilient during post-disaster restoration. To unveil innovative recovery concepts, processes, and social challenges, several outcomes that maximize energy efficiency and conservation opportunities are discussed. The results indicate that the Sustainable Campus Initiative contributed to energy relief in the summer of 2011. It made campus life more creative during a period when the 15 percent mandatory power-saving order by the government to big clients of Tokyo and Tohoku Electric was established. Pilot experiments provide a useful example of how the communications media have an extraordinary ability to increase public understanding of social issues. Since the March 11 disaster, power shortages have redirected renewed attention to fossil fuels. As large energy consumers, universities have an increased responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable design and encourage innovative development concepts in their regions in the future.

The Daliangshan fault zone is the eastern branch in the central section of Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault system. It has been neglected for a long time, partly because of no destructive earthquake records along this fault zone. On the other hand, it is located on the remote and inaccessible plateau. So far it was excluded as part of the Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault system. Based on the interpretation of aerophotographs and field investigations, we document this fault zone in detail, and give an estimation of strike-slip rate about 3 mm/a in Late Quaternary together with age dating data. The results suggest that the Daliangshan fault zone is a newly-generated fault zone resulted from shortcutting in the central section of Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault system because of the clockwise rotation of the Southeastern Tibetan Crustal Block, which is bounded by the Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault system. Moreover, the shortcutting may make the Daliangshan fault zone replace the Anninghe and Zemuhe fault zones gradually, and finally, the later two fault zones will probably die out with the continuous clockwise rotation.

Two distinct pathways of p16 gene inactivation in gallbladder cancer

AIM: To examine the mechanism of inactivation of the p16 gene in gallbladder cancer,and to investigate p16 alterations and their correlation with clinicopathological features. METHODS: Specimens were collected surgically from 51 patients with gallbladder cancer. We evaluated the status of protein expression,loss of heterozygosity (LOH),homozygous deletion and promoter hypermethylation using immunohistochemistry,microsatellite analysis,quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and methylation-specific PCR,respectively. In addition,mutations were examined by direct DNA sequencing. RESULTS: Homozygous deletions of the p16 gene exon2,LOH at 9p21-22,p16 promoter hypermethylation,and loss of p16 protein expression were detected in 26.0% (13/50),56.9% (29/51),72.5% (37/51) and 62.7% (32/51),respectively. No mutations were found. LOH at 9p21 correlated with the loss of p16 protein expression (P < 0.05). Homozygous deletion of the p16 gene,a combination LOH and promoter hypermethylation,and multiple LOH at 9p21 were significantly correlated with the loss of p16 protein expression (P < 0.05). LOH at 9p21 and promoter hypermethylation of the p16 gene were detected in 15.4% (2/13) and 92.3% (12/13) of the tumors with homozygous deletion of the p16 gene,respectively. P16 alterations were not associated with clinicopathological features. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that LOH and homozygous deletion may be two distinct pathways in the inactivation of the p16 gene. Homozygous deletion,a combination of LOH and promoter hypermethylation,and multiple LOH are major mechanisms of p16 inactivation in gallbladder cancer.

Electrochemical behavior of [UO_2Cl_4]^(2-) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium based ionic liquids

In order to examine the chemical form of uranyl species in l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium （EMI） based ionic liquids, UV-visible absorption spectra of solutions prepared by dissolving [EMI]2[UO2CI4] into a mixture of EMICI and EMIBF4 （50：50 tool%） were measured. As a result, it was confirmed that uranyl species in the mixture of EMICI and EMIBF4 existed as [UO2C14]2-. Cyclic voltammograms （CVs） of [UO2CI4]2- in the mixture were measured at 25 ~C using a Pt working electrode, a Pt wire counter electrode, and an Ag/Ag＋ reference electrode （0.01 M AgNO3, 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in acetonitrile） in a glove box under an Ar atmosphere. Peaks corresponding to one redox couple were observed around -1.05 V （Epc） and -0.92 V （Epa） vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium ion （Fc/Fc＋）. The potential differences between two peaks （AEp） increased from 101 to 152 mV with an increase in the scan rate from 50 to 300 mV s-1, while the （Epc ＋ Epa）/2 value was constant, -0.989 V vs. Fc/Fc＋ regardless of the scan rate. Furthermore, the diffusion coefficient of [UO2C14]2 and the standard rate constant were es- timated to be 3.7× 10^-8 cm^2 s 1 and （2.7-2,8） × 10^-4 cm s-! at 25 ℃. By using the diffusion coefficient and the standard rate constant, the simulation of CVs was performed based on the reaction, [UO2C14]2- ＋ e- = [UO2C14]3-. The simulated CVs were found to be consistent with the experimental ones. From these results, it is concluded that [UO2C14]2- in the mixture of EMIC1 and EMIBF4 is reduced to [UO2C14]3- quasi-reversibly at -0.989 V vs. Fc/Fc＋.
