The microstructural changes taking place during heating of calcium orthophosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) agglom- erates were examined in this study. The starting powder was prepared by the spray-pyrolysis of calcium phosphate (Ca/P ratio=1.50) solution containing 1.8 mol·L-1 Ca(NO3)2, 1.2 mol·L-1 (NH4)2HPO4 and concentrated HNO3 at 600 C, using an o air-liquid nozzle. The spray-pyrolyzed powder was found to be composed of dense spherical agglomerates with a mean diameter of 1.3 μm. This powder was further heat-treated at a temperature between 800 and 1400 C for 10 min. When o the spray-pyrolyzed powder was heated up to 900 C, only β-Ca3(PO4)2 was detected, and the mean pore size of the o spherical agglomerates increased via the (i) elimination of residual water and nitrates, (ii) rearrangement of primary par- ticles within the agglomerates, (iii) coalescence of small pores (below 0.1 μm), and (iv) coalescence of agglomerates with diameters below 1 μm into the larger agglomerates. Among the heat-treated powders, pore sizes within the spherical agglomerates were observed to be the largest (mean diameter: 1.8 μm) for the powder heat-treated at 900 C for 10 min. o With an increase in heat-treatment temperature up to 1000 C, the spherical agglomerates were composed of dense o shells. Simplification of vacuole structure during plant cell death triggered by culture filtrates of Erwinia carotovora

Vacuoles are suggested to play crucial roles in plant defense-related cell death. During programmed cell death, previous live cell imaging studies have observed vacuoles to become simpler in structure and have implicated this simplification as a prelude to the vacuole＇s rupture and consequent lysis of the plasma membrane. Here, we examined dynamics of the vacuole in cell cycle-synchronized tobacco BY-2 （Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Bright Yellow 2） cells during ceil death induced by application of culture filtrates of Erwinia carotovora. The filtrate induced death in about 90% of the cells by 24 h. Prior to cell death, vacuole shape simplified and endoplasmic actin filaments disassembled; however, the vacuoles did not rupture until after plasma membrane integrity was lost. Instead of facilitating rupture, the simplification of vacuole structure might play a role in the retrieval of membrane components needed for defense-related cell death.

Present status of pumped hydro storage operations to mitigate renewable energy fluctuations in Japan

This paper focuses on pumped hydro energy storage(PHES)plants’current operations after electricity system reforms and variable renewable energy(VRE)installations in *** plants have historically been developed to create electricity demand at night in order to operate base load power plants,such as nuclear power plants,in stable ***,many PHES plants are located midway between nuclear power plants and large demand ***,all nuclear power plants had to–at least temporarily–shut down after the Great East Japan Earthquake followed by a nuclear accident at Fukushima Daiichi in 2011,and renewable energy power plants have been deployed rapidly after the introduction of a feed-in-tariff(FIT)***,PHES plants are being used to mitigate fluctuations of VRE,especially in areas where renewable energy has been significantly *** daily highest capacity ratio of PHES plants in Kyushu area has recorded three times higher than it in the other areas where the past operating mode is still *** those operations on PHES plants are simply followed as a dispatch rule of the Organization for Crossregional Coordination of Transmission Operators(OCCTO),market-based operations have not been conducted enough *** market design shall be changed to harmonize VRE installation and PHES plants’operations are necessary to make the transition from the past operating mode of PHES plants across Japan.

Cost-profit analysis for Japan-Russia and Japan-South Korea interconnectors

This paper describes the results of cost-profit analysis related to interconnectors for Japan-Russia and JapanSouth Korea based on the Asia International Grid Connection Study Group 2^(nd) report. The Group has been established in 2016 for conducting research on international electric power networks in Asia from the viewpoint of technology, investment and legal framework. 2^(nd) report of the Group was published in June 2018, examining the profitability of an interconnectors between Japan and neighboring countries. The Group has calculated expected profit from operation of these *** Group has categorized interconnector business into four models from the survey of preceding and current business on grids and interconnectors. To clarify profitability, expected internal rate of return(IRR) was calculated for each business model based on estimated investment cost for each route. When interconnector is dedicated to specific power plants or suppliers and electricity can be sold at Japan wholesale market at 2016-2017 price level, positive IRR levels are expected in case that Free on Board(FOB) price lower than 7 JPY/kWh. When the investment will be covered by electricity tariff by final consumers, tariff for consumers will just slightly increase by approximately 0.1 JPY/kWh.

Russell body duodenitis in a patient with retroperitoneal metastasis of ureteral cancer

Key structure in laminar-turbulent transition of boundary layer with streaky structures

A numerical simulation is performed to find out a key vortical structure in the laminar-turbulent transition. A low-speed streak is generated inside a laminar boundary layer using an isolated cuboid roughness, aimed at providing an environment unstable to outer disturbances. Then, a short duration jet is issued into the boundary layer. When the jet velocity is low, some vortices appear in the boundary layer, but the transition of the boundary layer does not take ***, when the jet velocity exceeds a certain threshold, two vortices newly appear above the elongated legs of a V-shaped vortex and only one of them is stretched and survives. After that,vortices are generated one after another around the survived one. By comparing the decayed and the survived vortices, it is found that the difference in their heights is the key characteristic which leads to the transition.

The clinch–adhesive process,which combines mechanical clinching and adhesive bonding,is one of the most applied pro-cesses for joining aluminum alloy and steel in the manufacturing of vehicle *** this hybrid process,the clinching joints and adhesive bonds are coupled and influenced by each other,posing challenges to the process design and joining strength *** understand the influence of the clinching process on the performance of the adhesive layer,this study analyzes the mechanical behavior of clinch–adhesive joints between high-strength steel JSC780 and aluminum alloy A5052-H34 with different stack-up orientations and varying numbers of clinching *** results reveal that,under the steel-on-top condition,the clinching process causes a discontinuous distribution of the adhesive layer,which significantly decreased the bonding *** contrast,under the aluminum-on-top condition,the clinching process has a lesser impact on the distribution of the adhesive layer,resulting in much higher strength than the steel-on-top *** mod-els are constructed to quantify the effect of clinching points on the performance of the adhesive *** results highlight the need to consider diverse cohesive zone model parameters for the different stack orientations and clinching points in the design of clinch–adhesive aluminum alloy/steel structures.

Classification of rectal cancer according to recurrence types-comparison of Japanese guidelines and Western guidelines

BACKGROUND Rectal cancer is characterized by more local recurrence(LR)and lung metastasis than colon ***,the diagnosis of rectal cancer is not standardized as there is no global consensus on its definition and *** classification of rectal cancer differs between Japanese and Western *** To clarify the characteristics of rectal cancer by comparing the tumor location and characteristics of rectal cancer with those of colon cancer according to each set of *** A total of 958 patients with Stage II and III colorectal cancer were included in the analysis:607 with colon cancer and 351 with rectal *** of rectal cancers was assessed by enema examination and rigid *** to Japan guidelines,rectal cancer is classified as Rb(below the peritoneal inversion),Ra(between the inferior margin of second sacral vertebrae and Rb)or RS(between Ra and sacral promontory).RESULTS There were no significant differences between RS rectal cancer and colon cancer in the rates of liver and lung metastasis or *** metastasis and LR were significantly more common among Rb rectal cancer(in Japan)than in colon cancer(P=0.0043 and P=0.0002,respectively).Lung metastases and LR occurred at significantly higher rates in rectal cancer measuring≤12 cm and≤10 cm than in colon cancers(P=0.0117,P=0.0467,P=0.0036,P=0.0010).Finally,the rates of liver metastasis,lung metastasis,and LR in rectal cancers measuring 11 cm to 15 cm were 6.9%,2.8%,and 5.7%,*** were equivalent to the rates in colon *** High rectal cancer may be treated with the same treatment strategies as colon *** was no difference in the classification of colorectal cancer between Japan and Western countries.

Numerical simulation of droplet-formation in rotary atomizer

Numerical simulations of the liquid flow scattering from rotary atomizers are performed using an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The influence of grooves at the edges of the atomizers on the formation of ligaments and droplets is investigated changing the numbers and shapes of the grooves. As a result, it is found that small droplets are likely to be generated when the number of grooves is large and the depth of grooves is deep. It is also found that the grooves work more effectively in bell-cup atomizers than in disk type atomizers.
