This paper describes our work on developing a human-machine dialogue-based English computer assisted language learning(CALL) *** system aims at eliciting more speech production from Japanese E2L(English as a second language) learners in order to improve their speaking skills,by involving them in man-machine *** contents include the following three parts:the first one introduces the system interface which provides prompt text in Japanese,in order to help learners construct utterances which are easy to be recognized;The second one presents the speech recognizer that uses a reduced phoneme set to develop acoustic *** set was developed by a phonetic decision tree based data-driven *** ASR performance achieved 93% word accuracy on the collected dialogue speech at a real time speed,based on a tri-gram with a perplexity of *** third one is about the collection of simulated E2L dialogue databases for future studies on dialogue management and system optimization.

Grafted fibrous polymer with quaternary amine groups could function as a highly-efficient catalyst for biodiesel fuel (BDF) production. In this study, the optimization of grafted fibrous polymer (catalyst) and transesterification conditions for the effective BDF production was attempted through a batch-wise transesterification of triglyceride (TG) with ethanol (EtOH) in the presence of a cosolvent. Trimethylamine was the optimal quaternary amine group for the grafted fibrous catalyst. The optimal degree of grafting of the grafted fibrous catalyst was greater than 170%. The optimal transesterification conditions were as follows: The optimal molar quantity of quaternary amine groups, transesterification temperature, molar ratio of TG and EtOH, and primary alkyl alcohol were 0.8 mmol, 80°C, 1:200, and 1-pentanol, respectively. The grafted fibrous catalyst could be applied to BDF production using natural oils. Furthermore, the grafted fibrous catalyst could be used repeatedly after regeneration involving three sequential processes, i.e., organic acid, alkali, and alcohol treatments, without any significant loss of catalytic activity.

It has been reported that ambient particulate matter （PM） in some large cities, such as Beijing, China, causes adverse respiratory health effects. However, there is currently no experimental report on the relationship between bronchial asthma and urban PM （UPM） in northeast Asia. In this study, the microbial and chemical substances adsorbed onto UPM collected in Beijing were excluded by heat-treatment at 360°C for 30 min. The effects of UPM or heated UPM （H-UPM） toward allergic lung inflammation were compared in murine lungs to investigate the role of organic substances. ICR mice were administrated intratracheally with the two kinds of UPM and/or ovalbumin （OVA） 4 times at 2-week intervals. UPM and H-UPM enhanced eosinophil recruitment induced by OVA in the alveoli and in the submucosa of the airway. UPM and H-UPM synergistically increased Th-2 cytokines-interleukin （IL）-4 and IL-13, eosinophil-relevant cytokines and chemokines, such as IL-5 and monocyte chemotactic protein-3 （MCP-3）, induced by OVA in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid （BALF）. The enhancing effects were much greater in UPM than in H-UPM. These results suggest that the aggravated lung eosinophilia in UPM was due to activation of a Th2-associated immune response. Chemical materials of air pollutant origin contained in UPM, and inorganic components （elemental carbon, mineral elements） in H-UPM, could also cause the aggravation.

BACKGROUND Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma(SNUC) is a rare aggressive tumor that is often unresectable. Optimal treatment for patients with unresectable,locally advanced SNUC(LA-SNUC) has not been established,and the patient outcome remains poor. We report two cases of unresectable LA-SNUC in which induction chemotherapy with docetaxel,cisplatin and fluorouracil(TPF) followed by radiotherapy with concurrent cisplatin(CCRT),a standard treatment option for locally advanced head and neck cancer,demonstrated promising *** SUMMARY A 39-year-old man presented with tearing and pain in the right eye. A biopsy of the tumor invading the sinonasal cavities,right orbit and cranial base confirmed the diagnosis of LA-SNUC. Induction TPF chemotherapy induced remarkable tumor shrinkage and rapidly improved the symptoms. He subsequently received CCRT and achieved complete remission of the disease. The other case is a 21-year-old man who presented with worsening vision. The unresectable tumor involving the nasal septum and cranial base was pathologically diagnosed as SNUC. TPF chemotherapy followed by CCRT yielded complete remission of the disease with preserved visual function. Both patients have been disease-free for44 *** Induction TPF chemotherapy followed by CCRT may remarkably improve the outcomes in LA-SNUC patients.

Ovarian cancer is the most common malignant disease leading to death among women. IL (interleukin)-17A is the most well-studied member of the IL-17 family, and has been demonstrated to play a critical role in host defenses against various microbial pathogens, as well as against tissue inflammation. T-helper (Th)17 cells that produce interleukin (IL)-17A are of particular importance, because IL-17A exerts a wide variety of biological functions, particularly related to inflammation and the resultant carcinogenesis, as well as immune suppression in patients with cancer, and IL-17A-targeted therapy has been proven to be effective in the treatment of some autoimmune diseases. The pathogenic features of Th17 and IL-17A cells in cancer are still controversial, and Th17 cells appear to promote disease progression, as well as be present in the vicinity of many types of malignant diseases. In cancer patients, MDSC (myeloid-derived suppressor cells), one of the major immunosuppressive immature cells, and VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) are reported to correlate each other and strongly connected to IL-17-driven inflammation and malnutrition. In the present review, the latest advances are presented about the basic features of IL-17A and Th17. The function of IL-17A has not been clarified especially in ovarian cancer. This review overview the basic features of IL-17A and the functions in ovarian cancer as well as in other malignant and non-malignant diseases. Increasing our understanding of the interactions between IL-17A and ovarian cancer could lead to new therapeutic strategies in oncology.

The Prognostic Significance of the Preoperative Platelet-Lymphocyte Ratio in Japanese Patients with Localized Breast Cancer

Inflammation has been shown to be a factor in tumorigenesis. The circulating platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a representative index of systemic inflammation. In this study, we analyzed the association between preoperative PLR levels and clinicopathological variables in two hundred sixty-four Japanese patients with localized breast carcinoma. We also evaluated the prognostic significance of preoperative PLR levels using the Cox proportional hazard model. Seventy-five patients (28.4%) had elevated PLR values, whereas 189 (71.6%) had depressed PLR values. The PLR correlated significantly with venous invasion (P < 0.05). Disease-free survival rates were significantly worse among patients with elevated PLR values than among those with lower PLR value (5-year survival, 81.6% vs. 90.7%, respectively;P < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, elevated PLR, nuclear grade, and lymph node involvement were significant prognostic factors for disease-free survival in patients with breast carcinoma (P < 0.05). Preoperative PLR levels may be an independent prognostic factor in patients with breast carcinoma.
