Agro-residue biochar and N fertilizer addition mitigates Co2-C emission and stabilized soil organic carbon pools in a rain-fed agricultural cropland

Scarce carbon dioxide(Co_(2))emission data,soil organic carbon(C_(org))and labile C_(org) pool index for croplands in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA)limits our ability to define regional Co_(2) flux and mitigation prospects provided by biochar ***,we conducted a two-year field scale study quanti-fying effects of biochar(12t ha^(-1)),biochar(12t ha^(-1))and N fertilizer(90 kg N ha^(-1)),N fertilizer(90 kg N ha^(-1))alone and control(no amendment)on C_(org),C_(org) pools,lability index(LI)and Co_(2) emissions of a humid tropical alfisol under rainfed rice *** clearly demonstrate that biochar amendment combined with N fertilizer significantly increased C_(org),particulate organic carbon,and particulate organic carbon to organic carbon ***,this combination decreased dissolved organic carbon,dissolved organic carbon to organic carbon proportion,easily oxidizable carbon,easily oxidizable carbon to organic carbon proportion,microbial biomass carbon,microbial biomass carbon to organic carbon proportion,LI,and Co_(2) emission when compared to other *** findings established relationship between labile C_(org) pools and Co_(2) ***,our study suggest that application of biochar and N fertilizer addition can decrease Co_(2) emission from SSA croplands under rainfed rice cultivation,increase essential labile C_(org) pools,protect labile C_(org) pools sensitive to losses and sequester C_(org) with positive implication for global change mitigation and soil quality improvement.

Dermestes maculatus Degeer infestation impact on market loss of dried fish in Kwara State,Nigeria

Dried fish vendors located at three markets in Kwara State,Nigeria were surveyed and Dermestes maculatus Degeer-infested specimens of dried Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus,Heterobranchus bidorsalis and oreochromis niloticus were analyzed in the *** dried fish species were exposed to *** larvae and adults for 35 days at ambient laboratory conditions that coincided with their developmental cycle after which the level of damages were *** vendor survey showed that the Ipata market had the most dried fish vendors within the age of 20-30 years(46.66%)and that 60%of the fish vendors had,atmost,20 years of *** weight loss in dried fish due to *** infestations(larval,adult)was ***(22.66±1.20g,29.00±3.05g),***(14.33±2.96g,20.00±0.58g),and ***(14.00±1.53g,15.00±1.15g)in decreasing *** suggests that the development of cost-effective methods for pest control in dried fish would greatly reduce market loss of product for dried fish vendors from *** and other pestiferous species,making the dried fish business more profitable in Nigeria.

Exogenous application of chelators towards enhancing heavy metals extraction efficiency of bioenergy crop has received considerable attention in recent ***,little is known about optimal application rate,comparative evaluation of degradable versus non-degradable chelators and their impact on cadmium(Cd)speciation and uptake,physiological and biochemical activity of sweet sorghum grown under Cd *** chelators namely,Nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA),tetrasodium N,N-diacetate(TDA),Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA),iminodisuccinic acid(IDA)and control(CK)were applied and compared at rates of 2,5,and 10 mmol kg^(-1) towards augmenting phytoextraction efficiency of sweet sorghum for Cd remediation in a screen house *** showed that sweet sorghum augmented with TDA significantly(Pomass,enhanced Cd uptake and accumulation when compared to EDTA at application rate of 2-5 mmol kg*** influenced Cd speciation via increasing acid-soluble,reducible,oxidizable,and residual fractions of Cd,thus increasing Cd *** and TDA increased proline concentrations,antioxidant enzymes and net photosynthetic activity rate(Pn)comparably to EDTA in sweet sorghum,thus enhancing stress tolerance and stabilizing photosynthetic ***,exogenous application of degradable TDA at 2-5 mmol kg^(-1) could be recommended as replacement for non-degradable EDTA in a chelate assisted approach towards augmenting bioenergy crop for phytoremediation of Cd polluted soil.

The petrology of coal,as determined by the microscopic analysis of organic and inorganic elemental constituents of coal,provides information on its nature and *** is used worldwide in the production of thermal energy and *** the case of high-quality Colombian coals,only limited studies have been carried *** present study presents the geochemical,mineralogical,and petrological characteristics of coal samples collected from Puerto Drummond in Cienaga,Colombia,to predict their potential ***,the ultimate,proximate,petrographic,gross calorific value(GCV),ash fusion temperature,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray fluorescence(XRF),and Thermogravimetric(TG)analyses were employed in this *** petrological analysis reveals that Colombian coals are naturally more abundant in vitrinite(72%)than inertinite(14e23%)*** and aluminosilicate are the main minerals present as fine particles mixed with *** XRD and FTIR analyses show that the most common and dominant minerals are quartz,while gypsum,hematite,calcite and mica occur in lesser *** oxide composition of the coal ashes consists of 51e58%Sio2 and 18e25%Al2o3 as determined by XRF *** correlation and regression analysis,the moisture content shows a reverse correlation with GCV(Regression value of R2¼0.68).This study helps researchers to comprehend the importance of Colombian coals and presents various techniques for characterisation of coals.

The Benue Trough Basin (BTB) of Nigeria is geologically and geo-morphologically subdivided into upper,middle, and lower segments. The BTB is the subject of geological research due to its rich coal depositsthat have the potential for oil and gas. The purpose of the present study is to examine the origins,depositional environments, and thermal history of the selected coals and the processes that influencetheir quality. Coal samples from different open cast coal mines in the middle BTB were examined usingproximate and ultimate, x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray fluorescence (XRF), laser ablation induced coupledplasma (LA-ICPMS), and petrographical analyses. The coal samples contained mainly quartz, kaolinite,and organic carbon. The XRD spectra peaks revealed the triclinic and monoclinic structure of kaolin. TheSio2/Al2o3 ratios confirmed the dominance of quartz and kaolinite. The Ni/Co versus V/Cr, Cu/Zn, and V/Mo values in the studied coals suggest oxic depositional environments, whereas the V/(Ni þ V) and V/(V þ Cr) values indicate oxic to suboxic conditions. The Ce/Ce* values are slightly below 1, which indicates a suboxic depositional environment. Maceral texture is indicative of transformations from subbituminous to high volatile C or B bituminous coal. The maceral components and mineral matter(10%) of the studied coals imply deposition in the planar margin mire, and a river system of planarmargin mire environments, respectively. The high gelification index (GI) and tissue preservation index(TPI) values indicate peat accumulation developed within a wet forest swamp. The ternary diagram ofthe maceral component suggests deposition in a wet moor environment with intermittent moderate tohigh flooding episodes. The studied coals are sub-hydrous vitrinite inferring hydrogen-poor and thermally immature characteristics. The erratic supply of electricity in Nigeria has renewed interest in the utilisation of coal for energy selfsufficiency and diversification of the national energy *** this study,selected coal samples from three regions of the Benue Trough Basin were examined through pore water chemistry,X-ray diffraction(XRD),and thermosgravimetric analysis(TGA).The low pH observed for the Lower Benue Trough(LBT)coals indicates the release of sulphur and acids during *** analyses reveal quartz,kaolinite,montmorillonite,albite,pyrite,gypsum and sodium chlorate in the coal *** genetic kaolinite species identified in Imeagha(IMG)coal are detrital kaolinite and the highly crystalline neomorphic *** and jarosite minerals occurred in minor quantities in Garin Maiganga(GMG),whereas significant amount of pyrite was detected in Enugu(ENG)*** thermal degradation resulted in the residual mass(RM)ranging between 4.35%and 56.96%and mass losses(ML)between 43.04%and 95.65%due to the drying,devolatilization,and coke formation in the *** most reactive coal examined was GMG coal,whereas the least reactive was IMG ***(LMZ),GMG,and oKB coals are suited for electricity generation,whereas ENG and IMG coals can be utilised for cement production.

In this study,the physicochemical,microstructural,mineralogical,thermal,and kinetic properties of three newly discovered coals from Akunza(AKZ),ome(oME),and Shiga(SHG)in Nigeria were examined for potential energy *** analysis revealed high combustible but low levels of polluting *** higher heating values ranged from 18.65 MJ/kg(AKZ)to 26.59 MJ/kg(SHG).Microstructure and mineralogical analyses revealed particles with a rough texture,surface,and glassy lustre,which could be ascribed to metals,quartz,and kaolinite *** major elements(C,o,Si,and Al),along with minor elements(Ca,Cu,Fe,K,Mg,S,and Ti)detected are associated with clays,salts,or the porphyrin constituents of *** analysis showed mass loss(ML)ranges from 30.51%to 87.57%and residual mass(RM)from 12.44%to 69.49%under combustion(oxidative)and pyrolysis(non-oxidative)TGA conditions due to thermal degradation of organic matter and macerals(vitrinite,inertinite and liptinite).Kinetic analysis revealed the coals are highly reactive under the oxidative and non-oxidative conditions based on the Coats-Redfem *** activation energy(Ea)ranged from 23.81 to 89.56 kJ/mol,whereas the pre-exponential factor(kQ)was from 6.77×10^(-4)/min to 1.72×10^(3)/min under pyrolysis and combustion *** conclusion,the coals are practical feedstocks for either energy recovery or industrial applications.

Nigeria is an Afrotropical region with considerable ecological heterogeneity and levels of biotic *** its vertebrate fauna,reptiles have broad distributions,thus,they constitute a compelling system for assessing the impact of ecological variation and geographic isolation on species *** red-headed rock agama,Agama agama,lives in a wide range of habitats and,thus,it may show genetic structuring and ***,we tested the hypothesis that ecology affects its genetic structure and population *** inference phylogenetic analysis of a mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)gene recovered four well-supported matrilines with strong evidence of genetic structuring consistent with eco-geographic *** differences among populations based on the mtDNA also correlated with geographic distance. The ecologicalniche model for the matrilines had a good fit and robust performance. Population divergence alongthe environmental axes was associated with climatic conditions, and temperature ranked highestamong all environmental variables for forest specialists, while precipitation ranked highest for theforest/derived savanna, and savanna specialists. our results cannot reject the hypothesis that nicheconservatism promotes geographic isolation of the western populations of Nigerian A. ***, ecological gradients and geographic isolation impact the genetic structure and population divergenceof the lizards. This species might be facing threats due to recent habitat fragmentation,especially in western Nigeria. Conservation actions appear necessary.
