Papaya peel waste carbon dots/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite:From photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue to antimicrobial activity

Carbon dots(CDs)have gained unprecedented attention as a novel luminescent zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial owing to their diverse industrial ***,we reported the sus-tainable synthesis of fluorescent CDs from papaya peel waste,acting as a natural carbon ***-prepared CDs and reduced graphene oxide(RGO)were fabricated in the composites through a facile one-step hydrothermal *** RGO/CDs(RC)nanocomposites were characterized using spectroscopic,diffraction,and electron-microscopic ***-posites with variable RGO to CD mass ratios were tested for photodegradation of textile dye methylene blue(MB).The highest photocatalytic activity(degradation efficiency of 87%in 135 min)was obtained in the nanocomposite containing a 2꞉1 mass ratio(RC2).The RGO sheets in the nanocomposite acted as media for electron acceptors,promoting the fast transfer and sep-aration of photoinduced electrons during CDs excitation,thus preventing the recombination of the electron and *** on the agar well diffusion assay,the nanocomposites exhibited ex-cellent antibacterial activity than other tested materials against Bacillus subtilis(Gram-positive)and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(Gram-negative)*** largest inhibition zone area(22 mm),i.e.,the highest antimicrobial activity,was obtained in the nanocomposite tested against Gram-positive *** together,the synergistic effect of RGO and CDs enhanced the pho-tocatalytic and antibacterial performance of synthesized nanocomposite material.

Potential applications of lactic acid bacteria and bacteriocins in antimycobacterial therapy

Tuberculosis(TB) is a communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M. tuberculosis). WHO estimated that 10.4 million new(incident) TB cases worldwide in year 2016. The increased prevalence of drug resistant strains and side effects associated with the current anti-tubercular drugs make the treatment options more complicated. Hence, there are necessities to identify new drug candidates to fight against various sub-populations of M. tuberculosis with less or no toxicity/side effects and shorter treatment duration. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria(LAB) attract attention of researchers because of its "Generally recognized as safe" status. LAB and its bacteriocins possess an effective antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi. Interestingly bacteriocins such as nisin and lacticin 3147 have shown antimycobacterial activity in vitro. As probiotics, LAB plays a vital role in promoting various health benefits including ability to modulate immune response against various infectious diseases. LAB and its metabolic products activate immune system and thereby limiting the M. tuberculosis pathogenesis. The protein and peptide engineering techniques paved the ways to obtain hybrid bacteriocin derivatives from the known peptide sequence of existing bacteriocin. In this review, we focus on the antimycobacterial property and immunomodulatory role of LAB and its metabolic products. Techniques for large scale synthesis of potential bacteriocin with multifunctional activity and enhanced stability are also discussed.

In recent years,Peripheral blood smear is a generic analysis to assess the person’s health *** testing of Peripheral blood smear images are difficult,time-consuming and is subject to human intervention and visual *** method encouraged for researchers to present algorithms and techniques to perform the peripheral blood smear analysis with the help of computer-assisted and decision-making *** CAD based methods are lacks in attaining the accurate detection of abnormalities present in the *** order to mitigate this issue Deep Convolution Neural Network(DCNN)based automatic classification technique is introduced with the classification of eight groups of peripheral blood cells such as basophil,eosinophil,lymphocyte,monocyte,neutrophil,erythroblast,platelet,myocyte,promyocyte and *** proposed DCNN model employs transfer learning approach and additionally it carries three stages such as pre-processing,feature extraction and *** the pre-processing steps are incorporated to eliminate noisy contents present in the image by using Histogram Equalization(HE).It is enclosed to improve an image *** order to distinguish the dissimilar class and segmentation approach is carried out with the help of Fuzzy C-Means(FCM)model whereas its centroid point optimality method with Slap Swarm based optimization *** some specific set of Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix(GLCM)features of the segmented images are extracted to augment the performance of proposed detection *** the extracted features are recorded by DCNN and the proposed classifier has the capability to extract their own *** on this the diverse set of classes are classified and distinguished from qualitative abnormalities found in the image.

Bowel obstruction is one of the most common problems found in outpatient departments (OPDs) and emergency rooms. The challenge for surgeons is to be suspicious and recognizing rare disease that could cause bowel obstruction, such as paraduodenal hernia, without delaying the management as the risk of complications increase. This case study presents a patient with bowel obstruction secondary to a paraduodenal hernia.

An intuitive general rank-based correlation coefficient

Correlation analysis is an effective mechanism for studying patterns in data and making *** interesting discoveries have been made by formulating correlations in seemingly unrelated data. We propose an algorithm to quantify the theory of correlations and to give an intuitive, more accurate correlation *** propose a predictive metric to calculate correlations between paired values, known as the general rank-based correlation coefficient. It fulfills the five basic criteria of a predictive metric： independence from sample size,value between-1 and 1, measuring the degree of monotonicity, insensitivity to outliers, and intuitive ***, the metric has been validated by performing experiments using a real-time dataset and random number simulations. Mathematical derivations of the proposed equations have also been provided. We have compared it to Spearman＇s rank correlation coefficient. The comparison results show that the proposed metric fares better than the existing metric on all the predictive metric criteria.

Helicobacter pylori infection and gastropathy:A comparison between Indonesian and Japanese patients

AIM： To compare the effects of He/icobacter py/ori （Hpylon） infection on gastropathy between Indonesian and Japanese patients. METHODS： Biopsy specimens were obtained during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy from 167 subjects （125 Indonesians and 42 Japanese） with uninvestigated symptoms of dyspepsia. The specimens were analyzed for the presence of H pylori using urease analysis, histopathology, and cell culture. The grade and activity of gastritis was assessed using the updated Sydney system. RESULTS： The percentages of Indonesian and Japanese patients who were H py/ori-positive at the antrum or body of the stomach were similar （68% and 59.5%, respectively; P = 0.316）. Of those who were Hpylori-positive, more Japanese patients than Indonesian patients had high levels of polymorphonuclear cells （P = 0.001）, mononuclear cells （P = 0.013）, glandular atrophy （P = 0.000）, and intestinal metaplasia （P = 0.011） in both the antrum and body of the stomach. CONCLUSION： The grade of gastritis and prevalence of mucosal atrophy and intestinal metaplasia were higher in Japanese patients. The difference between Indonesian and Japanese patients was significant.

Toxicity of organophosphorus pesticide sumithion on larval stages of stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis

Sumithion is widely used to control brittle in paddy fields and tiger bug in fish larval rearing ponds. The objective of this study was to elucidate the toxic effects of sumithion on larval stages of stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis. Larvae were exposed to two concentrations(150 and 250 μg/L) of sumithion with one control in three replicates of each. Larvae samples were collected at 20- and 24-h intervals followed by observation under a digital microscope. Exposures of stinging catfish larvae to sumithion produced deformities including irregular head shape, lordosis, yolk sac edema, body arcuation, tissue ulceration, etc. The mortality rates of larvae were significantly increased in response to increase in sumithion concentrations. Furthermore, around 30% of the total adult stinging catfish reared in sumithiontreated aquaculture ponds were found to be deformed permanently. These findings highlight that exposure of stinging catfish to sumithion at the critical and sensitive stages in their life cycle may significantly reduce the number of returning adults. Therefore, the use of sumithion for crop protection needs to be considered carefully and alternatives to sumithion should to be developed for controlling aquatic insects in aqua-ponds during larval rearing.
