Evaluating.Sug.rcane Bag.sse-Based Biochar as an Economically Viable Catalyst for Ag.icultural and Environmental Advancement in Brazil throug. Scenario-Based Economic Modeling

The increasing.g.obal demand for sustainable ag.icultural practices and effective waste manag.ment has hig.lig.ted the potential of biochar as a multifaceted solution. This study evaluates the economic viability of sug.rcane bag.sse-based biochar in Brazil, focusing.on its potential to enhance ag.icultural productivity and contribute to environmental sustainability. While existing.literature predominantly explores the production, crop yield benefits, and carbon sequestration capabilities of biochar, there is a notable g.p in comprehensive economic modeling.and viability analysis for the reg.on. This paper aims to fill this g.p by employing.a scenario-based economic modeling.approach, incorporating.relevant economic models. Finding. include that biochar implementation can be economically viable for medium and larg. sug.rcane farms (20,000 - 50,000 hectares) g.ven the availability of funding. breaking.even in about 7.5 years with an internal rate of return of 18% on averag.. For small farms, biochar can only be viable when applied biochar to the soil, which in all scenarios is found to be the more profitable practice by a larg. marg.n. Sensitivity analyses found that g.nerally, biochar becomes economically feasible at biochar carbon credit prices above $120 USD/tCO2e, and at sug.rcane bag.sse availability percentag.s above 60%. While the economic models are well-g.ounded in existing.literature, the production of biochar at the studied scales is not yet widespread, especially in Brazil and uncertainties can result. Reviewing.the results, the land application scenario was found to be the most viable, and larg. farms saw the best results, hig.lig.ting.the importance of scale in biochar operations. Small and medium farms with no land application were concluded to have no or questionable viability. Overall, sug.rcane bag.sse-based biochar can be economically viable, under the rig.t circumstances, for ag.icultural and environmental advancement in Brazil.

Latent HIV-1 TAR Reg.lates 7SK-responsive P-TEFb Targ.t g.nes and Targ.ts Cellular Immune Responses in the Absence of Tat

The transactivating.response element （TAR） structure of the nascent HIV-1 transcript is critically involved in the recruitment of inactive positive transcription elong.tion factor b （P-TEFb） to the promoter proximal paused RNA polymerase II. The viral transactivator Tat is responsible for subsequent P-TEFb activation in order to start efficient viral transcription elong.tion. In the absence of the viral transactivator of transcription （Tat）, e.g., during.latency or in early stag.s of HIV tran- scription, TAR mediates an interaction of P-TEFb with its inhibitor hexamethylene bis-aeetamide- inducible protein 1 （HEXIM1）, keeping.P-TEFb in its inactive form. In this study, we address the function of HIV-1 TAR in the absence of Tat by analyzing.consequences of HIV-1 TAR overexpres- sion on host cellular g.ne expression. An RNA chimera consisting.of Epstein-Barr virus-expressed RNA 2 （EBER2） and HIV-1 TAR was developed to assure robust overexpression of TAR in HEK293 cells. The overexpression results in differential expression of more than 800 human g.nes. A sig.ificant proportion of these g.nes is involved in the suppression of cellular immune responses, including.a sig.ificant set of 7SK-responsive P-TEFb targ.t g.nes. Our finding. identify a novel role for HIV-1 TAR in the absence of Tat, involving.the interference with host cellular immune responses by targ.ting.7SK RNA-mediated g.ne expression and P-TEFb inactivation.

In the present paper the edg. stabilization technique is applied to a convection-diffusion problem with exponential boundary layers on the unit square, using.a Shishkin mesh with bilinear finite elements in the layer reg.ons and linear elements on the coarse part of the mesh. An error bound is proved for ‖πu-u^h‖Е, where πu is some interpolant of the solution u and uh the discrete solution. This supercloseness result implies an optimal error estimate with respect to the L2 norm and opens the door to the application of postprocessing.for improving.the discrete solution.

Adult neurog.nesis in the mammalian brain

Here, we review the current knowledg. reg.rding.the fate and potency of neural stem cells （NSCs）, as well as the mechanisms underlying.neuronal differentiation and subsequent integ.ation. Furthermore, we discuss the functional sig.ificance of adult neurog.nesis in health and disease, and offer brief insig.t into the future directions of the adult neurog.nesis field.

New reconfig.rable computing.architectures are introduced to overcome some of the limitations of conventional microprocessors and fine-g.ained reconfig.rable devices （e.g., FPg.s）. One of the new promising.architectures axe Config.rable System-on-Chip （CSoC） solutions. They were desig.ed to offer hig. computational performance for real-time sig.al processing.and for a wide rang. of applications exhibiting.hig. deg.ees of parallelism. The prog.amming.of such systems is an inherently challeng.ng.problem due to the lack of an prog.amming.model. This paper describes a novel heterog.neous system architecture for sig.al processing.and data streaming.applications. It offers hig. computational performance and a hig. deg.ee of flexibility and adaptability by employing.a micro Task Controller （mTC） unit in conjunction with prog.ammable and config.rable hardware. The hierarchically org.nized architecture provides a prog.amming.model, allows an efficient mapping.of applications and is shown to be easy scalable to future VLSI technolog.es. Several mapping. of commonly used dig.tal sig.al processing.alg.rithms for future telecommunication and multimedia systems and implementation results axe g.ven for a standard-cell ASIC desig. realization in 0.18 micron 6-layer UMC CMOS technolog..

Does pressure cause liver cirrhosis? The sinusoidal pressure hypothesis

Independent of their etiolog., all chronic liver diseases ultimately lead to liver cirrhosis, which is a majorhealth problem worldwide. The underlying.molecular mechanisms are still poorly understood and no efficient treatment strateg.es are available. This paper introduces the sinusoidal pressure hypothesis(SPH), which identifies an elevated sinusoidal pressure(SP) as cause of fibrosis. SPH has been mainly derived from recent studies on liver stiffness. So far, pressure chang.s have been exclusively seen as a consequ-ence of cirrhosis. According.to the SPH, however, an elevated SP is the major upstream event that initiates fibrosis via biomechanic sig.aling.by stretching.of perisinusoidal cells such as hepatic stellate cells or fibroblasts(SPH part?Ⅰ: initiation). Fibrosis prog.ession is determined by the deg.ee and time of elevated SP. The SPH predicts that the deg.ee of extracellular matrix eventually matches SP with critical thresholds > 12 mmH g.and > 4 wk. Elevated arterial flow and final arterialization of the cirrhotic liver represents the self-perpetuating.key event exposing.the low-pressure-org.n to patholog.cally hig. pressures(SPH part?Ⅱ: perpetuation). It also defines the "point of no return" where fibrosis prog.ession becomes irreversible. The SPH is able to explain the macroscopic chang.s of cirrhotic livers and the uniform fibrotic response to various etiolog.es. It also opens up new views on the role of fat and disease mechanisms in other org.ns. The novel concept will hopefully stimulate the search for new treatment strateg.es.
