Epi- and endobiont faunal communities on an Egyptian Mediterranean rocky shore: species composition and their competition for space

The exposed calcareous rocky area of the Abu Qir Headland,east of Alexandria,Egypt which range from coarse grains,through pebbles,cobbles,and boulders to rocky platforms,was signifi cantly colonized by sclerobionts(epibionts and endobionts).The epibiont species diversity was comparatively higher than that of endobionts.Epibiont communities included bryozoans(the anascan-grade cheilostome Bifl ustra savartii),serpulid(Hydroides elegans,Spirobranchus cf.tetraceros,Vermiliopsis striaticeps and Protula or Apomatus)and spirorbid(Spirorbis)wormtubes,and balanoid barnacles(Amphibalanus amphitrite,Balanus trigonus,and Perforatus perforatus).The cheilostome bryozoan colonies,which developed extensive sheets,proliferated on the study rocky shore either encrusting the bioeroded basement directly,or encrusting other epilithic taxa,particularly balanoid barnacles and serpulid worms.Encrusters displayed a remarkable marginal competitive interaction(overgrowth and stand-off)for space on the study rocky shore.On the other hand,endobionts were not well represented on the studied rocky shore exposure.It was possible to identify three ichnotaxa:Gastrochaenolites,Maeandropolydora,and Finichnus.The fi ndings documented represent a signifi cant contribution to our knowledge of sclerobionts composition,sequence of their colonization and/or bioerosion,and their mutual relationships on the intertidal rocky shore of the Abu Qir Headland.

The no-arbitrage property is widely accepted to be a centerpiece of modern financial mathematics and could be considered to be a financial law applicable to a large class of(idealized) markets.This paper addresses the following basic question:can one characterize the class of transformations that leave the law of no-arbitrage invariant?We provide a geometric formalization of this question in a non probabilistic setting of discrete time-the so-called trajectorial models.The paper then characterizes,in a local sense,the no-arbitrage symmetries and illustrates their meaning with a detailed example.Our context makes the result available to the stochastic setting as a special case.

Sailboat navigation control system based on spiking neural networks

In this paper,we presented the development of a navigation control system for a sailboat based on spiking neural networks(Snn).Our inspiration for this choice of network lies in their potential to achieve fast and low-energy computing on specialized hardware.To train our system,we use the modulated spike time-dependent plasticity reinforcement learning rule and a simulation environment based on the BindsnET library and USVSim simulator.Our objective was to develop a spiking neural network-based control systems that can learn policies allowing sailboats to navigate between two points by following a straight line or performing tacking and gybing strategies,depending on the sailing scenario conditions.We presented the mathematical definition of the problem,the operation scheme of the simulation environment,the spiking neural network controllers,and the control strategy used.As a result,we obtained 425 Snn-based controllers that completed the proposed navigation task,indicating that the simulation environment and the implemented control strategy work effectively.Finally,we compare the behavior of our best controller with other algorithms and present some possible strategies to improve its performance.

Storage time and condensed tannin content of high-moisture sorghum grains:Effects on in vitro fermentation and mold populations

Silage of high moisture sorghum grains is a highly relevant source of energy in cattle production systems in South America.There is little information related to the chemical characteristics,the kinetics of fermentation and the toxic fungal populations of these feedstuffs.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of storage time and condensed tannins content of the grain on chemical composition,in vitro fermentation parameters,and toxicogenic fungal populations of moist sorghum grain stored in silo-bags.Samples of 2 varieties of sorghum grains(high-tannin[HT]and low-tannin[LT]),were obtained during the grain harvest before silage making and after 30,90,and 180 d of storage(n=16).High-tannin grains had higher acid detergent fiber,tannins,gas production(Pnd lower starch and rate of gas production(Pnteraction variety x storage time were observed for all chemical parameters(Pneutral detergent fiber assayed with a heat stable amylase and expressed inclusive of residual ash(anDF)and pH.Starch and protein content increased in both varieties,tannins decreased in HT and LT,and organic matter(OM)increased in HT and declined in LT(Pn increased with the storage time for HT and LT(Pnear reduction in the Aspergillus number of colonies in the HT varieties was observed(Pnear increase in Penicillium isolation was detected in the LT sorghums(Pneficial in terms of decreasing the condensed tannins,increasing fractional rate of gas production and minimizing fungal contamination,particularly on HT grains.

Effects of Welding Procedure on Corrosion Resistance and Hydrogen Embrittlement of Supermartensitic Stainless Steel Deposits

The effects of shielding gas and post weld heat treatment on the pitting resistance, stress corrosion crack- ing and hydrogen embrittlement of supermartensitic stainless steel deposits were studied. Two all-weld-metal test coupons were prepared using a metal-cored wire under Ar＋ 5% He and Ar＋18%CO2 gas shielding mixtures. Solubi- lizing and solubilizing plus double tempering heat treatments were done with the objective of achieving different mi crostructural results, The samples welded under Ar＋5% He showed higher pitting corrosion resistance, for all post weld heat treatments, than those welded under Ar＋18% CO2. The different post weld heat treatments generated higher susceptibility to this corrosion mechanism. none of the samples presented signs of stress corrosion cracking, but in those subjected to the heat treatment, grain boundary selective attack was observed, on the surfaces of all the samples studied. The samples with highest hardness were more susceptible to hydrogen damage, thereby leading to reduced tensile strength on this condition.

Contemporaneous assembly of Western Gondwana and final Rodinia break-up:Implications for the supercontinent cycle

Geological,geochronological and isotopic data are integrated in order to present a revised model for the neoproterozoic evolution of Western Gondwana.Although the classical geodynamic scenario assumed for the period 800-700 Ma is related to Rodinia break-up and the consequent opening of major oceanic basins,a significantly different tectonic evolution can be inferred for most Western Gondwana cratons.These cratons occupied a marginal position in the southern hemisphere with respect to Rodinia and recorded subduction with back-arc extension,island arc development and limited formation of oceanic crust in internal oceans.This period was thus characterized by increased crustal growth in Western Gondwana,resulting from addition of juvenile continental crust along convergent margins.In contrast,crustal reworking and metacratonization were dominant during the subsequent assembly of Gondwana.The Rio de la Plata,Congo-Sao Francisco,West African and Amazonian cratons collided at ca.630-600 Ma along the West Gondwana Orogen.These events overlap in time with the onset of the opening of the Iapetus Ocean at ca.610-600 Ma,which gave rise to the separation of Baltica,Laurentia and Amazonia and resulted from the final Rodinia break-up.The East African/Antarctic Orogen recorded the subsequent amalgamation of Western and Eastern Gondwana after ca.580 Ma,contemporaneously with the beginning of subduction in the Terra Australis Orogen along the southern Gondwana margin.However,the Kalahari Craton was lately incorporated during the Late Ediacaran-Early Cambrian.The proposed Gondwana evolution rules out the existence of Pannotia,as the final Gondwana amalgamation postdates latest connections between Laurentia and Amazonia.Additionally,a combination of introversion and extroversion is proposed for the assembly of Gondwana.The contemporaneous record of final Rodinia break-up and Gondwana assembly has major implications for the supercontinent cycle,as supercontinent amalgamation and break-up do not necessarily represent alternating epis

Unmet needs exist in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLD)risk stratification.Our ability to identify patients with MASLD with advanced fibrosis and at higher risk for adverse outcomes is still limited.Incorporating novel biomarkers could represent a meaningful improvement to current risk predictors.With this aim,omics technologies have revolutionized the process of MASLD biomarker discovery over the past decades.While the research in this field is thriving,much of the publication has been haphazard,often using single-omics data and specimen sets of convenience,with many identified candidate biomarkers but lacking clinical validation and utility.If we incorporate these biomarkers to direct patients’management,it should be considered that the roadmap for translating a newly discovered omics-based signature to an actual,analytically valid test useful in MASLD clinical practice is rigorous and,therefore,not easily accomplished.This article presents an overview of this area’s current state,the conceivable opportunities and challenges of omics-based laboratory diagnostics,and a roadmap for improving MASLD biomarker research.

Circular RnAs in colorectal cancer:Possible roles in regulation of cancer cells

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and the fourth principal cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Currently, there is a lack of low cost and noninvasive screening tests for CRC, becoming a serious health problem. In this context, a potential biomarker for the early detection of CRC has recently gained attention. Circular RnAs(circ RnA), a re-discovered, abundant RnA specie, is a type of noncoding covalent closed RnAs formed from both exonic and intronic sequences. These circular molecules are widely expressed in cells, exceeding the abundance of the traditional linear m RnA transcript. They can regulate gene expression, acting as real sponges for mi RnAs and also regulate alternative splicing or act as transcriptional factors and inclusive encoding for proteins. However, little is known about circ RnA and its relationship with CRC. In this review, we focus on the biogenesis, function and role of these circ RnAs in relation to CRC, including their potential as a new biomarker.
