Probabilistic Seismic Risk Assessment in Manizales,Colombia: Quantifying Losses for Insurance Purposes

A fully probabilistic seismic risk assessment was developed in Manizales, Colombia, considering assets of different types. The first type includes elements that are part of the water and sewage network, and the second type includes public and private buildings. This assessment required the development of a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis that accounts for the dynamic soil response,assembling high resolution exposure databases, and the development of damage models for different types of elements. The economic appraisal of the exposed assets was developed together with specialists of the water utilities company of Manizales and the city administration. The risk assessment was performed using several Comprehensive Approach to Probabilistic Risk Assessment modules as well as the R-System, obtaining results in terms of traditional metrics such as loss exceedance curve, average annual loss, and probable maximum loss. For the case of pipelines, repair rates were also estimated. The results for the water and sewage network were used in activities related to the expansion and maintenance strategies, as well as for the exploration of financial retention and transfer alternatives using insurance schemes based on technical,probabilistic, and prospective damage and loss *** the case of the buildings, the results were used in the update of the technical premium values of the existing collective insurance scheme.

Relationship between HSP90a, nPC2 and L-PGDS proteins to boar semen freezability

Background： The purpose of this study was to determine the association of three proteins involved in sperm function on the freezability of porcine semen： the heat shock protein 90 alpha（HSP90a）, the niemann-Pick disease type C2 protein（nPC2）, and lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase（L-PGDS）.Six adult boars（each boar was ejaculated three times, 18 in total） were classified by freezability based on the percentage of functionally competent sperm. The male semen with highest freezability（MHF） and the male semen with lowest freezability（MLF） were centrifuged immediately after collection to separate seminal plasma and spermatozoa to make four possible combinations of these two components and to incubate them for 3 h,adjusting the temperature to 17 °C, to freeze them afterwards. The quantification of proteins was performed in two stages： at zero and at 3 h after incubation of the four ***： The spermatozoa × incubation time（IT） interaction only had effect（P 〈 0.01） on HSP90 a levels; this protein increased in seminal plasma, after 3 h of incubation, in larger quantity（P 〈 0.05） in combinations with MLF spermatozoa. In relation with the nPC2 protein, two isoforms of 16 and 19 kDa were identified. The 19 kDa isoform was affected（P 〈 0.01） only by the seminal plasma × IT interaction, with superior values（P 〈 0.01） both at zero and three hours of incubation, in the combinations with MHF seminal plasma; and 16 kDa isoform was affected（P 〈 0.01） only by the IT with reduction after 3 h of incubation. The levels of L-PGDS was affected（P 〈 0.01）only by the spermatozoa × IT interaction, which reduced（P 〈 0.01） in combinations with MLF spermatozoa after 3 h of ***： It is possible to consider that the three proteins evaluated were associated with freezability of boar semen due, especially, to the fact that mixtures with MLF spermatozoa showed greater increase levels of the HSP90 a protein and reduction of L-PGDS in plasma. Forest management planning often relies on Airborne Laser Scanning(ALS)-based Forest Management Inventories(FMIs)for sustainable and efficient *** the area-based(ABA)approach,these inventories estimate forest characteristics for grid cell areas(pixels),which are then usually summarized at the stand *** the ALS-based high-resolution norwegian Forest Resource Maps(16 m×16 m pixel resolution)alongside with stand-level growth and yield models,this study explores the impact of three levels of pixel aggregation(standlevel,stand-level with species strata,and pixel-level)on projected stand *** results indicate significant differences in the projected outputs based on the aggregation ***,the most substantial difference in estimated volume occurred between stand-level and pixel-level aggregation,ranging from-301 to+253 m^(3)·ha^(-1)for single *** differences were,on average,higher for broadleaves than for spruce and pine dominated stands,and for mixed stands and stands with higher variability than for pure and homogenous *** conclusion,this research underscores the critical role of input data resolution in forest planning and management,emphasizing the need for improved data collection practices to ensure sustainable forest management.

Recently, rare-earth perovskite-type oxides with the general formula ABO(A rare earth element, B transition metal, O oxygen) are regarded as promising materials for ni/oxide batteries due to their hydrogen storage ability. In the present study, the hydrogen storage properties of the rare-earth perovskite-type oxide LaSrCoFeOwere evaluated in alkaline solution and at various temperatures. The hydrogen storage properties were investigated electrochemically by applying galvanostatic charge/discharge currents. Electrochemical pressurecomposition-temperature isotherms were constructed using the nernst equation. The exchange current density and proton hydrogen diffusion coefficient were calculated using linear polarization measurements and the potential-step method, respectively. Interestingly, the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity, re-calculated from the electrochemical capacity, is 1.72 wt% at 333 K and 6 mol·LKOH. In addition, the hysteresis value, calculated from pressure-composition-temperature isotherms, was429 J·molat 333 K,while the self-discharge rate was about 25% after 24-h storage at open circuit and at 333 K.

Rainfall Sensitivity to Microphysics and Planetary Boundary Layer Parameterizations in Convection-Permitting Simulations over northwestern South America

Convection-permitting modeling allows us to understand mechanisms that influence rainfall in specific ***,microphysics parameterization(MP) and planetary boundary layer(PBL) schemes remain an important source of uncertainty,affecting rainfall intensity,occurrence,duration,and ***,we study the sensitivity of rainfall to three MP [Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF) Single-Moment 6-class(WSM6),Thompson,and Morrison] and two PBL [the Yonsei University(YSU) and Mellor–Yamada nakanishi niino(MYnn)] schemes with a convection-permitting resolution(4 km) over northwestern South America(nWSA).Simulations were performed by using the WRF model and the results were evaluated against soundings,rain gauges,and satellite data,considering the spatio-temporal variability of rainfall over diverse regions prone to deep convection in *** and PBL schemes largely influenced simulated rainfall,with better results for the less computationally expensive WSM6 MP and YSU PBL *** rain gauges and satellite estimates,simulations with Morrison MP overestimated rainfall,especially westward of the Andes,whereas the MYnn PBL underestimated precipitation in the Amazon–Savannas *** found that the uncertainty in the rainfall representation is highly dependent on the region,with a higher influence of MP in the Colombian Pacific and PBL in the Amazon–Savannas *** analyzing rainfall-related processes,the selection of both MP and PBL parameterizations exerted a large influence on the simulated lower tropospheric moisture flux and moisture *** schemes significantly influenced the downward shortwave radiation,with MYnn simulating a greater amount of low clouds,which decreased the radiation ***,latent heat fluxes were greater for YSU,favoring moist convection and *** schemes had a marked impact on vertical ***,Morrison MP showed stronger convection and higher precipitation rates,which is assoc

Geological inferences about the upper crustal configuration of the Medellin-Aburra Valley(Colombia)using strong motion seismic records

In regions of complex geology and tectonic assembly, strong motion seismic arrival time records can be used to test the plausibility of existing hypothesis about the origin of lithological and tectonic features and how they are related in space and time. In this study we use differential travel time residuals at some strong motion accelerographic stations in the Medellin-Aburra Valley, in the northern Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, to discuss some aspects of the geological configuration. We based our work on the hypothesis that the differences between seismic travel time residuals among pairs of stations are a function of the differences in the surface geology and the near-surface upper crustal configuration. Our results are consistent with the volcanic rocks of the Quebradagrande Complex being less mafic, more weathered or more tectonically affected than previously thought, with the presence of a relatively thin dunite body on top of the metamorphic basement, and with a large lateral heterogeneity in the mainly mafic San Diego Stock.

Remediation effect of compost on soluble mercury transfer in a crop of Phaseolus vulgaris

We studied the dynamics of mercury（Hg） transfer in Phaseolus vulgaris plants grown in soil with Hg-doped compost at the maximum levels permitted by Colombian law on organic amendments. Quantitative evaluation of transfer was made in different plant organs： roots,stem, leaves, pods and seeds. Matrix effect was determined in doped soil assays, using soil with and without addition of compost. Results showed that the use of organic matter reduced Hg transfer to the plant and the amount transferred was differentially distributed to the organs. We observed an inverse relationship between concentration and distance from the body to the root. It was evident that transfer was mediated by quantitative factors;the greater the presence of mercury in soil, the larger the amount that will be *** also indicate the remedial effect of compost and the presence of a barrier, at the root level, against mercury translocation to the plant aerial parts.

Characterization and Pyrometallurgical Removal of Arsenic from Copper Concentrate Roasting Dust

This paper describes the experimental results of removing arsenic from the dust collected in electrostatic precipitators of a fluidized bed roasting furnace (RP dust). The fluidized bed roasting process generates 600 kilotons of copper concentrate per year with 3 - 6 wt% of concentration of arsenic, producing a roasted product with a low content of arsenic below 0.3 wt%. The process generates 27 kilotons of RP dust per year with a concentration of arsenic of the order of 5 wt% and copper concentration of around 20 wt%. Subsequently, the dust collected in the electrostatic precipitators is treated by hydrometallurgical methods allowing the recovery of copper, and the disposition of arsenic as scorodite. This work proposes to use a pyrometallurgy process to the volatilization of arsenic from RP dust. The obtained material can be recirculated in copper smelting furnaces allowing the recovery of valuable metals. The set of experiments carried out in the roasting of the mixture of copper concentrate/RP dust and sulfur/RP dust used different ratios of mixtures, temperatures and roasting times. By different techniques, the characterization of the RP dust determined its size distribution, morphology, and chemical and mineralogical composition. RP dust is a composite material of small particles (n 50 μm agglomerates, mostly amorphous, with a complex chemical composition of sulfoxides. The results of the roasting experiments indicated that for a 75/25 weight ratio of the mixture of the copper concentrate/PR dust under 700℃, 15 minutes of roasting time with injection of air, the volatilization of arsenic reached 96% by weight. The arsenic concentration after the roasting process is less than 0.3% by weight. For a 5/95 mixture of sulfur/RP dust, at 650℃, the volatilization of arsenic reached a promissory result of 67%. Pyrometallurgical Removal of Arsenic from Electrostatic Precipitators Dusts of Copper Smelting

This work describes the experimental results of pyrometallurgical removing of arsenic from the dust collected in the electrostatic copper precipitators within the gas cleaning system of a Copper Flash Smelting Furnace. The generation of dust in the copper smelting worldwide ranges from 2 - 15 wt% per ton of a copper concentrate. In Chile, copper smelters produce approximately 110 kt/y of dust with a concentration of arsenic between 1 and 15 wt%. The dust is a complex of metals oxides and sulfurs with copper concentrations greater than 10 wt% and relatively high silver concentrations. Since its high arsenic concentration, it is difficult to recover valuable metals through hydrometallurgical processes or by direct recirculation of the dust in a smelting furnace. Thus, the development of pyrometallurgical processes aimed at reducing the concentration of arsenic in the dust (n objective of this study, giving particular attention to the production of a suitable material to be recirculated in operations of copper smelting. The work provides a detailed characterization of the dust including the Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy (QEMSCAn), Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (SEM/EDS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), the elemental chemical analysis using Atomic Adsorption (AAS), and X-Ray Fluorescence (X-RF). By considering that arsenic volatilization requires a process of sulfidation-decomposition-oxidation, this work seeks to explore the roasting of mixtures of copper concentrate/dust, sulfur/dust, and pyrrhotite/dust. By the elemental chemical analysis of the mixture after and before the roasting process, the degree of arsenic volatilization was determined. The results indicated the effects of parameters such as roasting temperature, gas flow, gas composition, and the ratio of mixtures (concentrate/dust, sulfur/dust, or pyrrhotite/dust) on the volatilization of arsenic.
