Corneal properties in children with congenital isolated growth hormone deficiency

AIM:To compare the corneal parameters of children with congenital isolated growth hormone deficiency and healthy ***:In this cross-sectional,prospective study,50 cases with growth hormone(GH)deficiency treated with recombinant GH and 71 healthy children underwent a complete ophthalmic *** corneal hysteresis(CH),corneal resistance factor(CRF),Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure(IOPg)and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure(IOPcc)were measured with the Ocular Response Analyzer(ORA).Central corneal thickness(CCT)was measured by a ultrasonic ***:The mean age was 13.0±3.0 years in the GH deficiency group consisting of 21 females and 29 males and 13.4±2.4 years in the healthy children group consisting of 41 females and 30 *** was no statistically significant difference between the groups for gender or age(Chi-square test,P=0.09;independent ttest,P=0.28,respectively).The mean duration of recombinant GH therapy was 3.8±2.4y in the study *** mean CH,CRF,IOPg and IOPcc values were 11.0±2.0,10.9±1.9,15.1±3.3,and 15.1±3.2 mm Hg respectively in the study *** same values were 10.7±1.7,10.5±1.7,15.2±3.3,and 15.3±3.4 mm Hg respectively in the control *** mean CCT values were 555.7±40.6,545.1±32.5μm in the study and control groups *** was no statistically significant difference between the two groups for CH,CRF,IOPg,IOPcc measurements or CCT values(independent t-test,P=0.315,0.286,0.145,0.747,0.13 respectively).CONCLUSION:Our study suggests that GH deficiency does not have an effect on the corneal parameters and CCT *** observation could be because of the duration between the beginning of disease and the diagnosis and beginning of GH therapy.

To the Editor： A 58-year-old man was presented with the complaints ofepigastric pain, nonbilious vomiting, and progressive distension of the abdomen for the last I month. There was no significant history. Physical examination was within normal limit except abdominal distension with hyperactive peristalsis. Laboratory examinations were normal except blood urea nitrogen： 35 mg/dl, creatinine： 1.45 mg/dl, hemoglobin： 10.5 g/dl, and leukocyte counts： 17,000/mm^3.

Application of pH control to a tubular flow reactor

Tubular flow reactors are mainly used in chemical industry and waste water discharged units. Control of output variables is very difficult because of the existence of high dead-time in these types of reactors. In the present work, sodium hydroxide and acetic acid solutions were sent to the tubular flow reactor. The aim was to control p H at 7 in the nonlinear region. The p H control of a tubular flow reactor with high time delay and a highly nonlinear behavior in p H neutralization reaction was investigated experimentally in the face of the various load and set point changes. Firstly, efficiency of conventional Proportional-Integral-Derivative(PID) algorithm in the experiments was tested. Then self-tuning PID(STPID) control system was applied by using the ARMAX model. The model parameters were calculated from input–output data by using PRBS signal as disturbance and Bierman algorithm. Lastly, the experimental fuzzy control of p H based on fuzzy model was achieved to compare the success of fuzzy approach with the performance of other control cases studied.

Research of Type 2 Diabetes Patients’ Problem Areas and Affecting Factors

Background: The study was descriptively conducted in order to determine problem areas and the affecting factors among the Type II diabetes patients. Methods: The study was carried out between August and October, 2011 in the Endocrinology Polyclinic in Adiyaman, Turkey. The population of the study was made up by Type II diabetes patients who were diagnosed with diabetes at least one year ago and came to Endocrinology Polyclinics at the study period. The sample of the research consisted of 188 patients who were recruited using random sampling method, were diagnosed as diabetes for at least one year. Data were collected through a Personal Information Form and Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) Scale. The data obtained were assessed in SPSS packet programme by using arithmetic average, percentage, variance analysis and t-test. Results: It was found out that the participant patients had serious problems in diabetes and their mean PAID score was 68.17 ± 16.16. The difference between patients BMI values and mean PAID scores was statistically significant (p Conclusion: It was established that the patients included in the study experienced a serious diabetes problem. In addition to the results, this study could be used to help develop nursing interventions.

BACKGROUND:The appropriate sequence of different imagings and indications of thoracic computed tomography(TCT)in evaluating chest trauma have not yet been clarified at *** current study was undertaken to determine the value of chest X-ray(CXR)in detecting chest injuries in patients with blunt ***:A total of 447 patients with blunt thoracic trauma who had been admitted to the emergency department(ED)in the period of 2009–2013 were retrospectively *** patients met inclusion criteria(age>8 years,blunt injury to the chest,hemodynamically stable,and neurologically intact)and underwent both TCT and upright CXR in the *** imagings were re-interpreted after they were collected from the hospital database by two skilled ***:Of the 447 patients,309(69.1%)were *** mean age of the 447 patients was 39.5±19.2(range 9 and 87 years).158(35.3%)patients were injured in motor vehicle accidents(MVA).CXR showed the highest sensitivity in detecting clavicle fractures[95%CI 78.3(63.6–89)]but the lowest in pneuomediastinum[95%CI 11.8(1.5–36.4)].The specificity of CXR was close to 100%in detecting a wide array of ***:CXR remains to be the first choice in hemodynamically unstable patients with blunt chest ***,stable patients with normal CXR are candidates who should undergo TCT if significant injury has not been ruled out.

Thepatient was treated at the Department of Emergency and Critical Care, Gazi University School ofMedicine, ***： The patient was discharged without any complications from the Critical Care Unitafter treatment for fi ve ***： Airway management is of utmost importance in resuscitation of FFI, butit is always difficult to secure via the orotracheal route due to the deformed facial *** is an option for airway management in FFI affecting head and neck region. However,tracheostomy may be associated with life-threatening complications, which should be closelymonitored with early intervention.

Difuse gastric xantomatosis： an interesting endoscopic finding of xanthoma

To the editor： A 25-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with complaint of nausea for one week. She had Addison＇s disease （AD） and Hashimoto tiroidits （HT） diagnoses for two years and she has been maintained under the treatment of prednisolone 10 mg per day, fludrocortisone 0.1 mg per day and levothyroxin sodium 100 mg per day. Routine biochemical examination, complete blood count, urine analysis and B-hCG were generally normal. Plasma levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and triglyceride were respectively; 80 mg/dl （〈200）, 26 mg/dl （〈I00）, 4 mg/dl （40-60） and 251 mg/dl （〈150）. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy （GIE） showed that gastric mucosa were whitish colored as floured. Mucosal pattern showed fern-like pattern （Figure 1）. Antrum was nodulary. Histopathologic examination showed findings of chronic Helicobacter pylori （Hp） gastritis and large foamy histiocytes within the lamina propria. CD68 immuno- histochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis of gastric xanthoma. The patient was given quadruple eradication therapy with bismuth subcitrate.
