The im.une system. of wild rats and of laboratory rats can been utilized as m.dels of the hum.n im.une system.in pre-industrial and post-industrial societies, respectively. In this study, lym.hocyte phenotypes in wild rats were broadly characterized, and the results were com.ared to those obtained by us and by others using cells derived from.various strains of laboratory rats. Although not expected, the production of regulatory T cells was not apparently different in wild rats com.ared to laboratory rats. On the other hand, differences in expression of m.rkers involved in com.lem.nt regulation, adhesion, signaling and m.turation suggest increased com.lem.nt regulation and decreased sensitivity in wild-caught rats com.ared to laboratory rats, and point toward com.lex differences between the m.turation of T cells. The results potentially lend insight into the pathogenesis of post-industrial epidem.cs of allergy and autoim.une disease.

m.asthenia gravis (m.) is an autoim.une disorder involving the neurom.scular junction that frequently affects the extra-ocular m.scles (EOm.). It has been described as a very rare cause of bilateral EOm.atrophy, but histological analysis of such cases is lacking. A 66-year-old m.n presented with two m.nths of right eyelid drooping and vertical diplopia. Exam.nation showed bilateral ophthalm.paresis and com.lete right ptosis. The rem.inder of his exam.was norm.l, and an m.I showed sm.ll EOm.. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies were elevated, establishing the diagnosis of m.. Oral corticosteroids and pyridostigm.ne followed by azathioprine im.roved his ptosis, but not his ophthalm.paresis. One year later he had surgical correction of his diplopia, and the resected superior rectus m.scle showed com.lete replacem.nt of EOm.by connective tissue. m. can rarely cause bilateral EOm.atrophy, which is characterized histologically by fibrosis in the m.scle itself. Atrophy in the EOm. of a m.asthenic patient m.y indicate a poor response to m.dical m.nagem.nt alone.

Background: Staple line reinforcem.nt m.terial has been dem.nstrated to raise the burst pressure threshold after linear intestinal stapling. Num.rous bioprosthetic m.terials have been utilized in surgical practice. Porcine urinary bladder m.trix (ACell, Inc.) is an extracellular m.trix m.terial derived from.porcine bladder used to reinforce surgically repaired soft tissue, and facilitate the body’s regenerative capacity. Objective: This study represents the first evaluation of urinary bladder m.trix in gastrointestinal staple line reinforcem.nt. m.thods: Pathogen-free pigs underwent m.dline laparotom. under general anesthesia. Sm.ll intestinal division was perform.d with an endoscopic linear stapler. Nineteen intestinal divisions were perform.d with urinary bladder m.trix staple line reinforcem.nt, and twenty divisions were unreinforced. Staple lines were then subjected to burst pressure analysis by intralum.nal infusion of dyed Krebs solution at an infusion rate of 20 m.·m.n-1 under m.nom.tric m.nitoring. Upon visible staple line extravasation, intralum.nal pressure was recorded. Results: Intestinal staple lines reinforced with urinary bladder m.trix exhibited significantly higher burst pressure threshold (p m.Hg, com.ared to 61 ± 37 m.Hg for unreinforced staple lines. Conclusion: Staple line reinforcem.nt using urinary bladder m.trix acutely im.roves burst pressures of intestinal staple lines when com.ared with unreinforced staple lines. Its regenerative properties m.y confer a long-term.advantage to staple line reinforcem.nt. These findings, along with previous findings of constructive rem.deling in the presence of urinary bladder m.trix in treatm.nt of the gastrointestinal system. suggest that UBm.m.y serve a role in gastrointestinal staple line reinforcem.nt.

Background: Running-related overuse injuries can result from.the com.ination of extrinsic(e.g., running m.leage) and intrinsic risk factors(e.g.,biom.chanics and gender), but the relationship between these factors is not folly understood. Therefore, the first purpose of this study was to determ.ne whether we could classify higher-and lower-m.leage runners according to differences in lower extrem.ty kinem.tics during the stance and swing phases of running gait. I he second purpose was to subgroup the runners by gender and determ.ne whether we could classify higherand lower-m.leage runners in m.le and fem.le ***: Participants were allocated to the "higher-m.leage" group(≥32 km.week; n= 41(30 fem.les)) or to the "lower-m.leage" group(≤25 km.n= 40(29 fem.les)). Three-dim.nsional kinem.tic data were collected during 60 s of treadm.ll running at a self-selected speed(2.61 ± 0.23 m.s).A support vector m.chine classifier identified kinem.tic differences between higher-and lower-m.leage groups based on principal com.onent ***: Higher-and lower-m.leage runners(both genders) could be separated with 92.59% classification accuracy. When subgrouping by gender,higher-and lower-m.leage fem.le runners could be separated with 89.83% classification accuracy, and higher-and lower-m.leage m.le runners could be separated with 100% classification ***: These results dem.nstrate there are distinct kinem.tic differences between subgroups related to both m.leage and gender, and that these factors need to be considered in future research.
