Trace elements migrating from tailings to rock varnish laminated sediments in an old mining region from Nelson,Nevada,USA

The dispersion and influence of soluble and particulate trace elements(TEs) present in the materials from abandoned mines is an imminent problem on terrestrial and aquatic *** goal of this research is to provide a broader view of such transport,assessing particle size distribution and TE interactions(e.g.,scavenging) with mine tailings and locally derived sediments transported by water in arid *** grains from wash sediment were collected from a dry ephemeral wash in Nelson,Nevada where the Techatticup Mine and Mill worked between 1850 and *** were evaluated to determine the association and behavior of certain metals and metalloids including aluminum,arsenic,barium,cadmium,copper,chromium,iron,manganese,lead,selenium,vanadium,and zinc to rock varnish laminated *** show that some metals and metalloids were more concentrated on larger particles whereas others indicated the opposite *** example,As was greatest on silt fractions and least on coarse fractions,while Se was detected only on ***,Cu,Fe,Mn,Pb,and Zn concentrations all increased with decreasing particle size(silt> sand> coarse),whereas Al,Ba,and V showed the opposite trend(silt d d Se were lower in mine tailing sediment treated with wash than those obtained for source *** in treated wash sediment samples,the high EFs of Ba,Cr,V,and Mn suggested a possible greater affinity of these metals to the Al,Fe,and Mn oxides from the RV *** data found in this study show that transport of contaminated sediments in arid regions could lead to the enrichment of some TEs in downgradient areas from source materials.

Methods for Measuring diffusion of a Social Media-Based Health Intervention

This study evaluated the feasibility of measuring diffusion from a social networking community-level intervention. One year after completion of a randomized controlled HIV prevention trial on Facebook, 112 minority men who have sex with men (MSM) were asked to refer African-American and/or Latino sex partners to complete a survey. Results suggest that, compared to non-referrers, referrers spent more time online, controlling for age, race, education, and condition. Over 60% of referrals reported hearing about the intervention, and over half reported that the referrer talked to them about changing health behaviors. Results provide support and initial feasibility of using social networking for diffusing community-based HIV interventions.

Two-photon lithography for 3d magnetic nanostructure fabrication

Ferromagnetic materials have been utilized as recording media in data storage devices for many decades. The confinement of a material to a two-dimensional plane is a significant bottleneck in achieving ultra-high recording densities, and this has led to the proposition of three-dimensional （3d） racetrack memories that utilize domain wall propagation along the nanowires. However, the fabrication of 3d magnetic nanostructures of complex geometries is highly challenging and is not easily achieved with standard lithography techniques. Here, we demonstrate a new approach to construct 3d magnetic nanostructures of complex geometries using a combination of two-photon lithography and electrochemical deposition. The magnetic properties are found to be intimately related to the 3d geometry of the structure, and magnetic imaging experiments provide evidence of domain wall pinning at the 3d nanostructured junction.

Controversies in fluid therapy: Type, dose and toxicity

Fluid therapy is perhaps the most common intervention received by acutely ill hospitalized patients; however, a number of critical questions on the efficacy and safety of the type and dose remain. In this review, recent insights derived from randomized trials in terms of fluid type, dose and toxicity are discussed. We contend that the prescription of fluid therapy is context-specific and that any fluid can be harmful if administered inappropriately. When contrasting ‘‘crystalloid vs colloid'', differences in efficacy are modest but differences in safety are significant. differences in chloride load and strong ion difference across solutions appear to be clinically important. Phases of fluid therapy in acutely ill patients are recognized, including acute resuscitation, maintaining homeostasis, and recovery phases. Quantitative toxicity(fluid overload) is associated with adverse outcomes and can be mitigated when fluid therapy basedon functional hemodynamic parameters that predict volume responsiveness and minimization of non-essential fluid. Qualitative toxicity(fluid type), in particular for iatrogenic acute kidney injury and metabolic acidosis, remain a concern for synthetic colloids and isotonic saline, respectively. Physiologically balanced crystalloids may be the ‘‘default'' fluid for acutely ill patients and the role for colloids, in particular hydroxyethyl starch, is increasingly unclear. We contend the prescription of fluid therapy is analogous to the prescription of any drug used in critically ill patients.

The apple dwarfing rootstock‘Malling9’(‘M9’)has been used worldwide both to reduce scion vigour and as a genetic source for breeding new *** of‘M9’segregate for rootstock-induced dwarfing of the scion,indicating that this trait is controlled by one or more genetic factors.A quantitative trait locus(QTL)analysis of a rootstock population derived from the cross between‘M9’×‘Robusta5’(non-dwarfing)and grafted with‘Braeburn’scions identified a major QTL(dw1)on linkage group(LG)5,which exhibits a significant influence on dwarfing of the scion.A smaller-effect QTL affecting dwarfing(dw2)was identified on LG11,and four minor-effect QTLs were found on LG6,LG9,LG10 and *** analysis indicates that the combination of dw1 and dw2 has the strongest influence on rootstock-induced dwarfing,and that dw1 has a stronger effect than *** markers linked to dw1 and dw2 were screened over 41 rootstock accessions that confer a range of effects on scion *** majority of the dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstock accessions screened carried marker alleles linked to dw1 and *** suggests that most apple dwarfing rootstocks have been derived from the same genetic source.

In this paper we demonstrated a method to reconstruct vector-valued lattice distortion fields within nanoscale crystals by optimization of a forward model of multi-reflection Bragg coherent diffraction imaging(MR-BCdI)*** method flexibly accounts for geometric factors that arise when making BCdI measurements,is amenable to efficient inversion with modern optimization toolkits,and allows for globally constraining a single image reconstruction to multiple Bragg peak *** is enabled by a forward model that emulates the multiple Bragg peaks of a MR-BCdI experiment from a single estimate of the 3d crystal *** present this forward model,we implement it within the stochastic gradient descent optimization framework,and we demonstrate it with simulated and experimental data of nanocrystals with inhomogeneous internal lattice *** find that utilizing a global optimization approach to MR-BCdI affords a reliable path to convergence of data which is otherwise challenging to reconstruct.
