oceanographical features on both sides of Balingtang Channel (17°55′-20°06′N, 122°55′-126°57′E) were comprehensively investigated on board of R/V "Experiment 3" in June. 1984. The pre-sent paper reports the chlorophyll data collected and primary productivity estimated there. Water sam-ples were taken with a glass bottle of Model HQMat the depth of 0, 10. 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150m, separately. Chlorophyll was determined according to the spectrophotometry proposed by UNESCo(1966) and calculated with the trichromatic equations of Jeffrey-Humphrey(1975). Estimations ofprimary productivity were carried out using a simplified equation (Q = 1.5) given by Cadee(1975).

-During the multi-disciplinary investigations on the waters of Nansa Islands for three cruises respectively in 1985. 1986. 1987. it is found that the dissolved oxygen maximum (Domax) in its vertical distribution usually exists between 20m and 75m deep. The deep position of o2 maximum is near the thermocline below and above the deep chlorophyll maximum, as well as above the light-beam attenuation coefficient maximum. In the parts of o2 maximum occurring, the minimum of Co2 partial pressure and the maximum of pH value are also found at the same depth. It is still difficult to explain the features exactly by using the published resea.ch results about the oxygen maximum in its vertical distribution on the waters of middle and high *** the present paper, the dissolved oxygen maximum in its vertical distribution on the waters of low latitude is described. It is made by an internal wave which holds eddy mixture. The feature appears to arise from the biological photosynthesis with stratification, from the action of the thermocline preventing oxygen from escaping to the atmosphere, when the environment is suitable for organisms to grow.

Effects of heavy metal ions on larval Penaeus chinensis and comparative study on their elimination methods

In order to establish a new method to eliminate toxicities of heavy metal ions to larval penaeid shrimp, the effects of copper, zinc, lead and cadmium ions on larval metamorphosis of Penaeus chinensis at each stage were determined in detail, and two methods eliminating toxicities were compared. The results indicate that sensitivity of larvae to heavy metal ions decreases in the order of nauplii, protozoea, mysis and postlarvae. The phytoplankton food can reduce, by chetating, the toxicities of heavy metal ions. Both EDTA chelation and PHMA absorption can be used to eliminate the toxicities effectively and there is no significant difference between the two methods. EDTA is harmful to larval P. chinensis at high concentration but affects neither survival nor metamorphosis at below 10 mg/dm3. It is preliminarily observed that copper and zinc ions at low concentration are beneficial to the development of larvae after protozoea stage. It is suggested that it is unnecessary to e-liminate the effects of heavy metal ions in the culture of penaeid shrimp, under normal conditions after protozoea stage.

Artificial hatching and fry culture of Bostrichthys sinensis (Lacepede) has been successful under conditions of enclosed sea.ater circulation system in the Aquarium Lab, South China sea.Fish. Res. Inst, on the 13th of April, 1984. The development of each stage of the eggs, larvae and juveniles are described, and colour photographs of every development stage were taken. According to their physiological characteristics in each stage, necessary ecological conditions for the developments are preliminarily discussed.

Signal processing techniques of cross-correlation, power spectral analysis and cross-power spectral analysis are used to determine the relationships between paleomagnetic properties and the oxygen isotope record of the South China sea.during the late Pleistocene. on the basis of correlation tests between the δ18o time series of cores V3 and A15 with the paleomagnetic properties of core SCS01, five events of susceptibility and intensity of natural remanent magnetization are identified as glacial events corresponding to δ18o positive events. The magnetic properties of the sediments which are independent of the geomagnetic field are sensitive climatic indicators which have frequencies corresponding to the Milankovitch orbital parameters.

A new method was used to remove heavy metals in sea.water. The requirement of copper in sea.water ofegg hatching and naupliar metamorphosis of Penaeus chinensis was investored. A certain amount of copper ion andchelator nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) were added in the de-heavy-metal-ionized sea.water and then the cupric ion actvitywas calculated. The effects of copper ion on egg hatching and naupliar metamorphosis were observed. It was firstfound by experiments that trace ionic copper (10-10.80-10-8.80 mol/dm3) was essential to the growth and development of egg and nauplii of penaeid shrimp and chelated copper had no actions for these living processes,but in highconcentrations (>10 -7.80 mol/dm3) ionic copper was toxic. The nauplii were more sensitive to necessity and tokicityof ionic copper than eggs.

on the basis of the analyses of significant periods for the sea.level observation data taken from recent several decades at 12 tide stations, the monthly mean sea.level observations are fitted by a model of linear trend of sea.level change superimposed with several variations of different fixed periods. The trends of sea.level relative changes and their errors are estimated by the LS method. The results are reduced to the isostatic datum proposed and established in the paper (Huang et al. , 1991, Seismology and Geology , 1, 1-15). The trends of sea.level changes in the near future along the coast of China are studied. It is pointed out that the general trend of the sea.level change along the coast of China is going up slowly and the rate of the change is not the same in different segments of the coasts. In a few segments, the sea.level is even relatively going down. The numerical results given in this paper provide a basis for the predictions of the future sea.level changes and their effects.

The annual, interannual and inter-decadal variability of convection intensity of South China sea.(SCS) summer monsoon and air-sea.temperature difference in the tropical ocean is analyzed, and their relationship is discussed using two data sets of 48-a SoDA (simple ocean data assimilation) and NCEP/NCAR. Analyses show that in wintertime Indian ocean (WIo), springtime central tropical Pacific (SCTP) and summertime South China sea.West Pacific (SSCSWP), air-sea.temperature difference is significantly associated with the convection intensity of South China sea.summer monsoon. Correlation of the inter-decadal time scale (above 10 a) is higher and more stable. There is inter-decadal variability of correlation in scales less than 10 a and it is related with the air-sea.temperature difference itself for corresponding waters. The inter-decadal variability of the convection intensity during the South China sea.summer monsoon is closely related to the inter-decadal variability of the general circulation of the atmosphere. Since the late period of the 1970s, in the lower troposphere, the cross-equatorial flow from the Southern Hemisphere has intensified. At the upper troposphere layer, the South Asian high and cross-equatorial flow from the Northern Hemisphere has intensified at the same time. Then the monsoon cell has also strengthened and resulted in the reinforcing of the convection of South China sea.summer monsoon.
