The ability to decipher.the genetic code of differ.nt species would lead to significant futur. scientific achievements in impor.ant ar.as, including medicine and agr.cultur.. The impor.ance of DNA sequencing necessitated a need for.efficient automation of identification of base sequences fr.m tr.ces gener.ted by existing sequencing machines, a pr.cess r.fer.ed to as DNA base-calling. In this paper. a patter. r.cognition technique was adopted to minimize the inaccur.cy in DNA base-calling. Two new fr.mewor.s using Ar.ificial Neur.l Networ.s and Polynomial Classifier. ar. pr.posed to model electr.pher.gr.m tr.ces belonging to Homo sapiens, Sacchar.myces mikatae and Dr.sophila melanogaster. De-cor.elation, de-convolution and nor.alization wer. implemented as par. of the pr.-pr.cessing stage employed to minimize data imper.ections attr.buted to the natur. of the chemical r.actions involved in DNA sequencing. Discr.minative featur.s that char.cter.ze each chr.matogr.m tr.ce wer. subsequently extr.cted and subjected to the chosen classifier. to categor.ze the events to their.r.spective base classes. The models ar. tr.ined such that they ar. not r.str.cted to a specific species or.to a specific chemical pr.cedur. of sequencing. The base- calling accur.cy achieved is compar.d with the exist- ing standar.s, PHr.D (Phil’s r.ad Editor. and ABI (Applied Biosystems, ver.ion2.1.1) KB base-caller. in ter.s of deletion, inser.ion and substitution er.or.. Exper.mental evidence indicates that the pr.posed models achieve a higher.base-calling accur.cy when compar.d to PHr.D and a compar.ble per.or.ance when compar.d to ABI. The r.sults obtained demon- str.te the potential of the pr.posed models for.efficient and accur.te DNA base-calling.
