Relevance of α-defensins(HNP1-3) and defensin β-1 in diabetes

AIm: To investigate the genetic background of human defensin expression in type 1 and 2 ***: Associations between DEFA1/DEFA3 gene copy number polymorphism and diabetes as well as between the promoter polymorphisms of DEFB1 and diabetes were studied. The copy number variation of the DEFA1/DEFA3 genes was determined in 257 diabetic patients(117 patients with type 1 and 140 with type 2 diabetes). The control group consisted of 221 age- and gender-matched healthy blood donors. The cumulative copy numbers of the DEFA1/DEFA3 genes were detected by using quantitative PCR analysis. To evaluate the HNP 1-3(human neutrophil peptide 1-3 or α-defensin) levels in the circulation, plasma HNP 1-3 concentrations were measured by ELISA. The expression of DEFA1/A3 in peripheral leukocytes of the diabetic patients was measured by quantitative RT PCR analysis. Three SNPs of the human DEFB1(human defensin β-1) gene: DEFB1 G-20A(rs11362), DEFB1 C-44G(rs1800972) and DEFB1 G-52A(rs1799946) were genotyped by Custom Taqman? Real Time PCR ***: Significant differences were observed in HNP1-3 levels between the healthy subjects and both groups of diabetic patients. The mean ± SE was 28.78 ± 4.2 ng/mL in type 1 diabetes, and 29.82 ± 5.36 ng/mL in type 2 diabetes, vs 11.94 ± 2.96 ng/mL in controls; P ma concentrations of HNP1-3. The highest concentrations of α-defensin were found in diabetic patients with nephropathy(49.4 ± 4.8 ng/mL), neuropathy(38.7 ± 4.8 ng/mL) or cardiovascular complications(45.6 ± 1.45 ng/L). There was no significant difference in the cumulative copy numbers of DEFA1/DEFA3 genes between controls and patients, or between patients with the two types of diabetes. Immigration and Liberal Egalitarianism

my principal objective in this paper is to examine what position liberal egalitarians should take regarding the issue of immigration. Given that liberal egalitarians grant central importance to individual autonomy and the moral equality of all persons, their rejection of restrictive immigration policies appears to follow from these central normative commitments. Liberal egalitarians such as Joseph Carens and Phillip Cole have argued that those who are committed to individual autonomy and moral equality should advocate for an open borders position in immigration. I argue that it is a serious mistake for liberal egalitarians to advocate open national borders and that borders should instead be strategically regulated to reduce global economic inequalities through immigration policies systematically integrated into development programs for the poorest and most vulnerable countries. Open borders would create an open market for immigration slots to choice countries of destination, which out of practical necessity would have to delimit the number of new imm.grants. It is well known in migration studies that those who are more educated, young, and have more resources are more likely to migrate than the very young, the elderly, the infirm, and the poorest individuals. Those left behind in developing countries suffer serious negative consequences from the emigration of the most highly educated, capable, and talented individuals in their society. I then argue that liberal egalitarians should grant particular moral consideration to the world"s poorest and most vulnerable and that immigration policies strategically designed to prioritize their needs are actually more consistent with the dual commitments of individual autonomy and moral equality than an open borders position. I propose three principles of global justice that are consistent with liberal egalitarianism that should guide transnational moral obligations. Optical full-field measurement methods are now widely applied in various domains. In general,the displacement fields can be directly obtained from the measurement,however in mechanical analysis strain fields are *** extract strain fields from noisy displacement fields is always a challenging *** this study,a finite element method for smoothing displacement fields and calculating strain fields is *** experimental test case on a holed aluminum specimen under tension is applied to validate this *** heterogeneous displacement fields are measured by digital image correlation(DIC).By this proposed method,the result shows that the measuring noise on experimental displacement fields can be successfully removed,and strain fields can be reconstructed in the arbitrary area.

Optical wireless communication(OWC)using the ultra-broad spectrum of the visible-to-ultraviolet(UV)wavelength region remains a vital field of research for mitigating the saturated bandwidth of radio-frequency(RF)***,the lack of an efficient UV photodetection methodology hinders the development of UV-based *** key technological impediment is related to the low UV-photon absorption in existing silicon photodetectors,which offer low-cost and mature *** address this technology gap,we report a hybrid Sibased photodetection scheme by incorporating CsPbBr_(3) perovskite nanocrystals(NCs)with a high photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY)and a fast photoluminescence(PL)decay time as a UV-to-visible colourconverting layer for high-speed solar-blind UV *** facile formation of drop-cast CsPbBr_(3) perovskite NCs leads to a high PLQY of up to ~73% and strong absorption in the UV *** the addition of the NC layer,a nearly threefold improvement in the responsivity and an increase of ~25% in the external quantum efficiency(EQE)of the solar-blind region compared to a commercial silicon-based photodetector were ***,timeresolved photoluminescence measurements demonstrated a decay time of 4.5 ns under a 372-nm UV excitation source,thus elucidating the potential of this layer as a fast colour-converting layer.A high data rate of up to 34 mbps in solar-blind communication was achieved using the hybrid CsPbBr_(3)-silicon photodetection scheme in conjunction with a 278-nm UVC light-emitting diode(LED).These findings demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated high-speed photoreceiver design of a composition-tuneable perovskite-based phosphor and a low-cost silicon-based photodetector for UV communication.

Risk assessment and validation of flood disaster based on fuzzy mathematics

Floods often take place around rivers and plains,which indicates a higher risk of flooding in these *** paper adopts fuzzy comprehensive assessment(FCA),simple fuzzy classification(SFC),and the fuzzy similarity method(FSm) to assess flood disaster risk in Kelantan,*** data,such as the flooded area,paddy area,urban area,residential area,and refuges,were overlaid to validate and analyze the accuracy of flood disaster *** results show that(1) 70-75% of flooded areas lie within the higher and high-est risk zones,which shows an effective assessment accuracy;(2) paddy,built-up,and residential areas concentrated in the higher and highest risk zones are more likely to be destroyed by flood disasters;(3) 200-225 refuges in the higher and highest risk zones account for around 50% of all refuges,which means that more refuges should be built in the higher and highest risk zones to meet the accommodation requirement;(4) three methods proved to be feasible and effective in evaluating flood disaster risk,among which FCA is more suitable for the study area than the two other methods.

Shade caused by trees or buildings can affect the quality and growth of ***,breeding for shade tolerance is an essential component of most turfgrass improvement *** objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of seashore paspalum(Paspalum vaginatum Sw.)breeding lines under shade in multi-environment *** sources were 20 lines from the University of Georgia seashore paspalum breeding program and two checks,the cultivars'SeaDwarf'and'SeaStar'.Field trials were conducted from 2016 to 2019 under shade structures designed to reduce ambient sunlight at three locations:Citra(FL),Tifton(GA),and Raleigh(NC).The response variables evaluated were percent living ground cover(%GC),dark green color index(DGCI),canopy height(CH)and turfgrass quality(TQ).Data were analyzed by mixed model approaches using ASReml-R,and the t-statistics were used to group the *** genetic variances were observed in the single-location-repeated-measures analysis for CH and DGCI at Citra and Tifton,%GC at Citra,and TQ at *** correlations of the predicted values for entries between locations ranged from low to moderate,with the exception of between Citra and Tifton(0.76)for *** were a few breeding lines with superior performance to the entry average for all traits for which the entry variance was *** conclusion,genetic variability was observed for all traits and superior seashore paspalum breeding lines for multiple traits were identified under shade.
