Apoptosis manifests in two major execution programs downstream of the death signal: the caspase pathway and organelle dysfunction. An important antiapoptosis factor, Bcl-2 protein, contributes in caspase pathway of apoptosis. Calcium, an important intracellular signal element in cells, is also observed to have changes during apoptosis, which maybe affected by Bcl-2 protein. We have previously reported that in Harringtonine (HT) induced apoptosis of HL-60 cells, there’s a change of intracellular calcium distribution, moving from cytoplast especially Golgi’s apparatus to nucleus and accumulating there with the highest concentration. We report here that caspase-3 becomes activated in HT-induced apoptosis of HL-60 cells, which can be inhibited by overexpression of Bcl-2 protein. No sign of apoptosis or intracellular calcium movement from Golgi’s apparatus to nucleus in HL-60 cells overexpressing Bcl-2 or treated with Ac-DEVD-CHO, a specific inhibitor of caspase-3. The results indicate that activated caspase-3 can promote the movement of intracellular calcium from Golgi’s apparatus to nucleus, and the process is inhibited by Ac-DEVD-CHO (inhibitor of caspase-3), and that Bcl-2 can inhibit the movement and accumulation of intracellular calcium in nucleus through its inhibition on caspase3. Calcium relocalization in apoptosis seems to be irreversible, which is different from the intracellular calcium changes caused by growth factor.

Designing regional pattern is challenging for ecosystem restoration both in theory and in practice. The present study proposed a new approach to design regional pattern for ecosystem restoration with a case in the arid valley of Upper Minjiang River, SW china. The procedures are: (1) Determine the regional pattern of main environmental factors based on the relationships between the important environmental factors and the main geographical factors generated from DEM data. (2) Overlay the maps of the main environmental factors. (3) Generate a lookup table according to the species selection rule we proposed to link the candidate restoration species to the main environmental factors.(4) Determine the regional pattern of ecosystem restoration by positioning the restoration species in the map of environmental factors according to the lookup table. The regional restoration pattern designed in this way would be applicable not only to restoring a region, but also to predicting the future landscape change.

A Study of Oxalate-Induced Systemic Resistance of Muskmelon to Squash Mosaic Virus

By treatment with oxalate muskmelon cultivar “Wangwenxiang”, which is sensitive to squash mosaic virus (SqMV), develops systemic resistance to SqMV significantly. The challenge inoculation experiments indicate that the symptom of oxalate treated plants gets much slighter, the virus content is only 4% reduced to. The peroxidase activity increases by five times, three new isoperoxidases are induced, and lignin content increases by 82.9%. These results indicate that oxalate induces systemic resistance of muskmelon to SqMV while it induces increase of peroxidase activity, new isoperoxidases and content of lignin in the plants treated with oxalate.

The authors study the tractability and strong tractability of a multivariate integration problem in the worst case setting for weighted 1-periodic continuous functions spaces of d coordinates with absolutely convergent Fourier series. The authors reduce the initial error by a factor ε for functions from the unit ball of the weighted periodic continuous functions spaces. Tractability is the minimal number of function samples required to solve the problem in polynomial in ε^-1 and d, and the strong tractability is the presence of only a polynomial dependence in ε^-1. This problem has been recently studied for quasi-Monte Carlo quadrature rules, quadrature rules with non-negative coefficients, and rules for which all quadrature weights are arbitrary for weighted Korobov spaces of smooth periodic functions of d variables. The authors show that the tractability and strong tractability of a multivariate integration problem in worst case setting hold for the weighted periodic continuous functions spaces with absolutely convergent Fourier series under the same assumptions as in Ref,[14] on the weights of the Korobov space for quasi-Monte Carlo rules and rules for which all quadrature weights are non-negative. The arguments are not constructive.

The roles of the magnetic field and electric field of the light are investigated when the light is refracted in the medium. The model of the electron cloud conductor is presented. Electron cloud in a molecule is treated as a conductor and the Faraday’s Law is applied to this conductor that is in the alternating magnetic field of the light. dBM/dt of the light gives rise to an alternating induced current on the electron cloud conductor, and the light exchanges energy, i.e. the refractive energy, with the elec- tron cloud conductor. Formulas of refractive index, which is the ratio of light speed in vacuum to that in the medium, are derived with this model. These formulas are tested with several mediums and Langevin’s diamagnetic susceptibility of helium gas, and the results are in good agreement with the measured data. The anisotropy and the nonlinearity of the refractive index are explained with the theory described in this work.

The two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic （MHD） equations are considered in this article. Viscous approximations are used to obtain the local existence and uniqueness of the classical solution. When the viscous term vanishes, the convergence rates, a main problem in turbulence, are also discussed. Moreover, a blow-up criterion for our classical solution is established in terms of the magnetic fields.

This paper proves a 1-1 correspondence between minimal probability entrance laws for the superprocess and entrance laws for its underlying process. From this the author deduces that an infinitely divisible probability entrance law for the superprocess is uniquely determined by an infinitely divisible probability measure on the space of the underlying entrance laws. Under an additional condition, a characterization is given for all entrance laws for the superprocess, generalizing the results of Dynkin (1989). An application to immigration processes is also discussed.
