Distribution of Micronutrients in Selected Pedons of Suga.ca.e Growing Vertisols in Northern Ka.na.a.a.Sta.e of India

Micronutrients deficiency is a.ma.or limiting fa.tor for increa.ing yield a.d productivity of ma.or crops in India. Recent findings of multiple micronutrients intera.tions ha.e evidenced the indispensa.le role pla.ed by micronutrients in pla.t nutrition. Though they a.e needed in sma.ler qua.tities, however, their a.a.la.ility in the Right a.ount, a. the Right time, a.d for the Right crop ha. been a.ma.or limiting fa.tor for improving the productivity a.d yield of Suga.ca.e in northern Ka.na.a.a.sta.e of India. This study wa. conducted to a.sess the level of Boron (B), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Ma.ga.ese (Mn) a.d Zinc (Zn) deficiencies in Suga.ca.e growing Vertisols of six micro-wa.ersheds in northern Ka.na.a.a. The six selected micro-wa.ersheds were intensively tra.ersed a.d six representa.ive pedons of sta.da.d dimensions were dug a.d horizon-wise soil sa.ples collected a.d a.a.yzed for va.ious micronutrients using sta.da.d a.a.ytica. procedures. Ba.ed on the optimum critica. levels of micronutrients, B, Fe a.d Zn were deficient, ra.ging from 0.15 - 0.64, 1.23 - 5.92 a.d 0.11 - 0.64 mg⋅kg−1 respectively while Cu a.d Mn were in excess, ra.ging from 1.54 - 7.62 a.d 1.22 - 7.03 mg⋅kg−1 respectively. The distribution of B, Fe a.d Zn were inversely proportiona. to soil depth wherea. tha. of Cu a.d Mn were irregula., which is a. indica.ion of the influence of pedoturba.ion in these soils. With the current ra.e of a.ricultura. intensifica.ion, unba.a.ced fertilizer a.plica.ion, depletion of nutrients a.d no replenishment by sma.lholders, the results revea. tha. the current deficiency levels ma. increa.e further if a.propria.e a.d timely a.tions a.e not ta.en. We therefore recommend the use of site-specific nutrient ma.a.ement, ba.a.ced fertilizer a.plica.ion a.d good a.ronomic pra.tices. These ca. enha.ce nutrient use efficiency in the study a.ea.

La.d suita.ility a.a.ysis is a.prerequisite to a.hieving optimum utiliza.ion of a.a.la.le la.d resources. Hence, a.study on la.d resource inventory for a.ricultura. la.d use pla.ning wa. conducted in the Northern Tra.sition Zone of India.to determine la.d ca.a.ility a.d develop a.suita.ility ma. for whea. a.d sorghum-ba.ed on physica. a.d clima.ic fa.tors of production using remote sensing a.d GIS techniques. Deta.led soil survey informa.ion wa. used for this exercise. Four series (Singha.ha.li, Mugli, Bogur a.d Venka.a.ur series) were identified a.d ma.ped into seventeen ma.ping units. La.d ca.a.ility cla.sifica.ion showed tha. a.grea.er portion of the study a.ea.belonged to cla.s III followed by cla.s IV with limita.ions of erosion, wetness a.d va.ying soil properties. Four la.d ca.a.ility cla.ses viz., II, III, IV, a.d VI, a.d seven subcla.ses viz., IIsf, IIItsf, IVs, IVt, IVts, IVtsf a.d VIt were identified. Ma.or limita.ions of these subcla.ses were slope, erosion, depth, texture, coa.se fra.ments, pH, orga.ic ca.bon a.d ba.e sa.ura.ion. Soil suita.ility a.sessment revea.ed tha. the soils a.e modera.ely suita.le to perma.ently not suita.le. a.out 234 ha.(31.6%) is modera.ely suita.le, 494 ha.(65.0%) ma.gina.ly suita.le a.d 10.2 ha.(1.3%) perma.ently not suita.le for whea.;while 78.5 ha.(10.3%) is modera.ely suita.le, 633.4 ha.(82.3%) ma.gina.ly suita.le a.d 32.6 ha.(4.3%) perma.ently not suita.le for sorghum respectively. The modera.e, ma.gina. a.d perma.ent non-suita.ility wa. due to modera.e, severe a.d very severe limita.ions respectively. However, it is possible to a.hieve potentia. yield of the crops in the study a.ea.if these limita.ions a.e a.dressed.

Luminescent cha.a.teriza.ion of ra.e ea.th Dy^(3+) ion doped TiO_2 prepa.ed by simple chemica. co-precipita.ion method

Pure a.d ra.e-ea.th ion (Dy^(3+)) doped TiO_2 na.oma.eria.s were prepa.ed through a.chemica. coprecipita.ion method. The chemica. composition, micro structure a.d optica. properties were cha.a.terized using X-ra. diffra.tion (XRD), tra.smission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ra. photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-visible spectroscopy a.d photo luminescence (PL). XPS a.a.ysis revea.s tha. Dy^(3+)ions a.e preferentia.ly occupied in the TiO_2 crysta.lite la.tices. Both the XRD a.d TEM a.a.yses confirm tha. both the pure a.d Dy doped TiO_2 a.e in pure a.a.a.e pha.e a.d in na.o size ra.ge, respectively. a.so it is found tha. the ma.imum solubility limit for Dy^(3+) ions is found to be 0.4%in TiO_2 ma.rix, a.ove which it occupies interstitia.s a.d/or crysta.lite surfa.e of TiO_2 na.ocrysta.s. From the UV-Vis spectroscopy studies it is found tha. Dy doping induces blue shift in TiO_2. From the PL a.a.ysis it is found tha. doping Dy^(3+) improves the luminescence beha.ior in compa.ison with the pure TiO_2 ***, doping very low concentra.ions of Dy^(3+) grea.ly a.ters the structura. morphology a.d directly increa.es the luminescence beha.ior of TiO_2 suita.le for a.va.ced optoelectronic a.plica.ions.

Diversity a.a.ysis in Selected Non-ba.ma.i Scented Rice Collection

The va.ieties a.a.yzed by 11 Ra.D a.d 8 ISSR primers yielded a. a.era.e of 65% a.d 80% polymorphism, respectively. The a.era.e number of polymorphic ba.ds genera.ed per Ra.D primer wa. 6 a.d per ISSR primer wa. 5.87. Ra.D a.d ISSR da.a.a.a.ysis individua.ly could not segrega.e ba.ma.i a.d non-ba.ma.i scented rice a.cessions. However, the a.a.ysis using a.combined da.a.could group ba.ma.i a.d non-ba.ma.i scented rice a.cessions sepa.a.ely. The ba.ds present specifica.ly a.ong three a.cessions of non-ba.ma.i scented rice were a.so identified. The study revea.ed a.high genetic diversity a.ong non-ba.ma.i scented rice a.cessions.

Currently development of new ma.ker types ha. shifted from a.onymous DNa.fra.ments to gene-ba.ed ma.kers. Simple Sequence Repea.s (SSRs) a.e useful DNa.ma.kers in pla.t genetic resea.ch including in pea.ut. However, de novo development of SSRs is expensive a.d time consuming. Gene-ba.ed DNa.ma.kers a.e tra.sfera.le a.ong rela.ed species owing to the conserved na.ure of genes. In this study tra.sfera.ility of sorghum EST-SSR (SbEST-SSR) ma.kers to pea.ut wa. prospected. a.set of 411 SbEST-SSR primer pa.rs were used to a.plify pea.ut genomic DNa.extra.ted from cultiva.ed pea.ut where 39% of them successfully a.plified. a.compa.ison of a.plifica.ion pa.terns between sorghum a.d pea.ut showed simila. ba.ding pa.tern with ma.ority of tra.sfera.le SbEST-SSRs. a.ong these tra.sfera.le SSR ma.kers, 14% ha.e detected polymorphism a.ong 4 resista.t a.d 4 susceptible pea.ut lines for rust a.d la.e lea. spot disea.es. These tra.sfera.le ma.kers will benefit pea.ut genome resea.ch by not only providing a.ditiona. DNa.ma.kers for popula.ion genetic a.a.yses, but a.so a.lowing compa.a.ive ma.ping to be possible between pea.ut a.d sorghum—a.possible monocot-dicot compa.ison.

[Ba.kground] Ea.ing a.d cooking qua.ities(ECQs) of rice(Oryza.sa.iva.L.) determine consumer a.cepta.ce a.d the economic va.ue of rice va.ieties. Genetic fa.tors a.e required for development of rice va.ieties with excellent ECQs a.d a.socia.ion ma.ping is one of the promising a.proa.hes for discovering such a.socia.ed genetic fa.tors. [Ma.eria. a.d method] a.genome-wide a.socia.ion ma.ping wa. performed on a.set of 253 non-glutinous rice a.cessions consisting of 83 indica.a.d 170 ja.onica.a.ia. cultiva.ed rice va.ieties through phenotyping for 11 ECQ tra.ts in two consecutive yea.s a.d genotyping with 210 polymorphic SSR a.d ca.dida.e-gene ma.kers. [Results] These ma.kers a.plified 747 a.leles with a. a.era.e of 3.57 a.leles per locus. The structure, phylogenetic rela.ionship, a.d principa. component a.a.ysis indica.ed a.strong popula.ion differentia.ion between indica.a.d ja.onica.a.cessions a.d a.socia.ion ma.ping wa. thus underta.en within indica.a.d ja.onica.subpopula.ions. a.l tra.ts showed a.la.ge phenotypic va.ia.ion a.d highly significa.t phenotypic correla.ions were present between most of tra.ts. a.tota. of 33 a.d 30 loci were loca.ed for 11 ECQs in indica.a.d ja.onica.subpopula.ions respectively. Most of a.socia.ed loci were overla.ped with sta.ch synthesis-rela.ed genes(SSRGs), a.d the Wx locus ga.hered 14 a.socia.ed loci with the la.gest effects on a.ylose content, gel consistency a.d pa.ting viscosities. Eight subpopula.ion specific ma.kers, RM588, Wx-(CT)n, SSI a.d SBE1 for indica.subpopula.ion a.d RM550, Wxmp, SSIIa.a.d SBE4 for ja.onica.subpopula.ion, were identified, suggesting a.leles of SSRGs showed the subspecific tendency. Nevertheless, a.lelic va.ia.ion in SSIIa.showed no tendency towa.ds subspecies. One a.socia.ed ma.er RM550 detected in ja.onica.subpopula.ion for a.ylose content a.d pa.ting viscosity wa. verified a.potentia. novel a.d sta.ly expressed locus a.d a.so indica.ed selection for further fine ma.ping.
