Determination of symptoms associated with hiesho among young females using hie rating surveys

Objective： Hie （cold sensation） is one of the most well-known health complaints in Japan and elsewhere in East Asia. Those who suffer from severe hie are considered to have hiesho （cold disorder）. This study was conducted to determine symptoms associated with hie in young females using a survey consisting of the hie scale and hie diary. Methods： Two hundred and seventy-one participants were included for the analysis. Survey forms were distributed to the participants. Diagnosis of hiesho was determined by using the hie scale. A discriminant score of over -0.38 was considered hiesho. The Short Form-8 Health Survey Standard Version （SF-8） was used to measure health-related quality of life （QOL）. The participants were also asked to respond to the questionnaire evaluating 14 physical and emotional symptoms, utilizing a six-level Likert scale item. Results： The 1st factor （hie factor） was correlated with hie （r= 0.546）, dry mouth （r= 0.332）, lower- extremity edema （r = 0.450）, headrushes （r=0.470）, shoulder stiffness （r = 0.311 ）, headrushes with chills （r = 0.726）, and fatigue （r= 0.359）. Cronbach＇s α of the 1st factor was 0.748, which indicated reliability between the items. When hie factor was the dependent variable, standardized partial regression coefficient was β=-0.387 for physical component score （P 〈 0.001） and β=-0.243 for mental component score （P 〈 0.001 ）. Conclusion： This study indicated that hiesho symptoms among young female adults were associated with bodily pain and general health perceptions of the SF-8 QOL survey.

New anti-proliferative agent,MK615,from Japanese apricot “Prunus mume” induces striking autophagy in colon cancer cells in vitro

AIM: To investigate the anti-neoplastic effects of MK615, an extract from the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against colon cancer cells. METHODS: Three colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, were cultured with MK615. Growth inhibition was evaluated by cell proliferation assay and killing activity was determined by lactate dehydrogenase assay. Induction of apoptosis was evaluated by annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry. Morphological changes were studied by light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8. RESULTS: MK615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner. Annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry showed that MK615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively. Light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8 revealed that MK615 induced massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines. CONCLUSION: MK615 has an anti-neoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by induction of apoptosis and autophagy.

Lysophosphatidic acid transactivates both c-Met and epidermal growth factor receptor, and induces cyclooxygenase-2 expression in human colon cancer LoVo cells

AIM： To examine whether lysophosphatidic acid （LPA） induces phosphorylation of c-Met and epidermal growth factor receptor （EGFR）, both of which have been proposed as prognostic markers of colorectal cancer, and whether LPA induces cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2） expression in human colon cancer cells. METHODS： Using a human colon cancer cell line, LoVo cells, we performed immunoprecipitation analysis, followed by Western blot analysis. We also examined whether LPA induced COX-2 expression, by Western blot analysis. RESULTS： Immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that 10 μmol/L LPA induced tyrosine phosphorylation of c-Met and EGFR in LoVo cells within a few minutes. We found that c-Met tyrosine phosphorylation induced by LPA was not attenuated by pertussis toxin or a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor, in marked contrast to the results for EGFR. In addition, 0.2-40 IJmol/L LPA induced COX-2 expression in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION： Our results suggest that LPA acts upstream of various receptor tyrosine kinases （RTKs） and COX-2, and thus may act as a potent stimulator of colorectal cancer. 2005 The WJG Press and Elsevier Inc. Effect of polyvinyl butyrate nanoparticles incorporated with immune suppressing vitamins on alteration of population of intestinal immune cells

The nanoparticles(NPs) from polyvinyl butyrate(PVBu) which can work as an orally applicable donor of butyrate for intestine were prepared. Immunotolerance inducing molecules such as vitamin D3and all-trans retinoic acid(ATRA) were incorporated into PVBu NPs. The alteration in populations and numbers of DC103+dendritic cells(DC) and regulatory T(Treg) cells in intestinal immune tissues were examined after oral administration of NPs. It was found that NPs reduced the population of CD103+DC and Treg cells in Peyer’s patched in lower part of the intestine and inversely increased the population of CD103+DC in mesenteric lymph node(MLN), while the population of Treg cells in MLN was unchanged. These observations indicate that NPs may enhance the immunotolerance at MLN and lamina propria toward luminal antigens, indicating the promising features of PVBu NPs as therapeutics of allergy and autoimmune diseases.

Metagenomic analysis reveals changes of the Drosophila suzukii microbiota in the newly colonized regions

The spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzula＇i （Matsumura）（Diptera： Drosophilidae） is a highly polyphagous pest of a wide variety of wild or cultivated berry and stone fruit. Originating from Southeast Asia, it has recently invaded a wide range of regions in Europe and North America. It is well known that insect microbiotas may significantly influence several aspects of the host biology and play an important role in invasive species introduction into new areas. However, in spite of the great economic im- portance of D. suzukii, a limited attention has been given so far to its microbiota. In this study, we present the first in-depth characterization of gut bacterial diversity from field （native and invasive range） and lab-reared populations of this insect. The gut bacterial communities of field insects were dominated, regardless of their origin, by 2 families of the phylum Proteobacteria： Acetobacteraceae and Enterobacteriaceae, while Firmicutes, mainly represented by the family Staphylococcaceae, prevailed in lab-reared population. Locality was the most significant factor in shaping the microbiota of wild flies. More- over, a negative correlation between diversity and abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and the time elapsed since the establishment of D. suzukii in a new region was observed. Altogether our results indicate that habitat, food resources as well as the colonization phase of a new region contribute to shape the bacterial communities of the invasive species which, in turn, by evolving more quickly, could influence host adaptation in a new environment.

Recent reports warned that planting leguminous trees under monocultures elevates nitrous oxide(N2O)emissions through N-rich litter *** hypothesized that planting trees on sandy soil can avoid the legume-derived boost of N2O emissions through limiting water availability for N2O *** of planting legumes on methane(CH4)uptakes were also examined.N2O emissions and CH4uptakes were compared among five tropical tree plantation stands including three leguminous stands(Acacia auriculiformis,Acacia mangium,and Xylia xylocarpa)and two non-leguminous stands(Eucalyptus camaldulensis,and Hope a odorata).Due to lower water contents of the soil,the N2O fluxes in our study site were at the lower end of the tropical rain *** we hypothesized,no clear differences in N2O emissions were obs erved between leguminous and non-leguminous ***4uptake rates in the present study were lower than those of other tropical ***4uptakes in leguminous stands did not differ from those in non-leguminous ***,we demonstrated that planting leguminous trees on sandy soils has a potential to enable us to manage leguminous monoculture tree plantations without boosting N2O emissions or reducing CH4uptakes.

Analysis of ABC (D) stratification for screening patients with gastric cancer

AIM:To evaluate the value of ABC(D) stratification [combination of serum pepsinogen and Helicobacter pylori(***) antibody]of patients with gastric ***:Ninety-five consecutive patients with gastric cancer were enrolled into the *** serum pepsinogenⅠ(PGⅠ) /pepsinogenⅡ(PGⅡ) and *** antibody levels were *** were classified into five groups of ABC(D) stratification according to their serological *** findings of atrophic gastritis and histological differentiation were also analyzed in relation to the ABC(D) ***:The mean patient age was(67.9±8.9) *** patients(3.2%) were classified into group A,7 patients(7.4%) into group A',27 patients(28.4%) into group B,54 patients(56.8%) into group C,and 4patients(4.2%) into group D,*** were only three cases in group A when the patients taking acid proton pump inhibitors and those who had undergone eradication therapy for ***(group A') were *** three cases had mucosal atrophy in the grey zone according to the diagnostic manual of ABC(D) ***,the mean age of the patients with well differentiated adenocarcinoma was significantly higher than that of the patients with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma(P<0.05) .There were no differences in the pattern of atrophy in the endoscopies between the well differentiated and poorly differentiated ***:ABC(D) stratification is a good method for screening patients with gastric *** is needed for grey zone cases to check the extent of mucosal atrophy.
