Carbon stock estimation by dual-polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and forest inventory data in a Mediterranean forest landscape

Forest ecosystems play a crucial role in mitigating global climate change by forming massive carbon sinks. Their carbon stocks and stock changes need to be quantified for carbon budget balancing and international reporting schemes. However, direct sampling and biomass weighing may not always be possible for quantification studies conducted in large forests. In these cases, indirect methods that use forest inventory information combined with remote sensing data can be beneficial. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images offer numerous opportunities to researchers as freely distributed remote sensing data. This study aims to estimate the amount of total carbon stock (TCS) in forested lands of the Kizildag Forest Enterprise. To this end, the actual storage capacities of five carbon pools, i.e. above- and below-ground, deadwood, litter, and soil, were calculated using the indirect method based on ground measurements of 264 forest inventory plots. They were then associated with the backscattered values from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data in a Geographical Information System (GIS). Finally, TCS was separately modelled and mapped. The best regression model was developed using the HH polarization of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 with an adjusted R^(2) of 0.78 (p < 0.05). According to the model, the estimated TCS was about 2 Mt for the entire forest, with an average carbon storage of 133 t ha^(−1). The map showed that the distribution of TCS was heterogenic across the study area. Carbon hotspots were mostly composed of pure stands of Anatolian black pine and mixed, over-mature stands of Lebanese cedar and Taurus fir. It was concluded that the total carbon stocks of forest ecosystems could be estimated using appropriate SAR images at acceptable accuracy levels for forestry purposes. The use of additional ancillary data may provide more delicate and reliable estimations in the future. Remote-sensing data play an important role in extracting information with the help of various sensors having different spectral,spatial and temporal resolutions.Therefore,data fusion,which merges images of different spatial and spectral resolutions,plays an important role in information extraction.This research investigates quality-assessment methods of multisensor(synthetic aperture radar[SAR]and optical)data fusion.In the analysis,three SAR data-sets from different sensors(RADARSAT-1,ALOS-PALSAR and ENVISAT-ASAR)and optical data from SPOT-2 were used.Although the PALSAR and the RADARSAT-1 images have the same resolutions and polarisations,images are gathered in different frequencies(L and C bands,respectively).The ASAR sensor also has C-band radar,but with lower(25 m)resolution.Since the frequency is a key factor for penetration depth,it is thought that the use of different SAR data might give interesting results as an output.This study describes a comparative study of multisensor fusion methods,namely the intensity-hue-saturation,Ehlers,and Brovey techniques,by using different statistical analysis techniques,namely the bias of mean,correlation coefficient,standard deviation difference and universal image quality index methods.The results reveal that Ehlers’method is superior to the others in terms of spectral and statistical fidelity.

We introduce a programmable eight-port interferometer with the recently proposed error-tolerant architecture capable of performing a broad class of transformations.The interferometer has been fabricated with femtosecond laser writing,and it is the largest programmable interferometer of this kind to date.We have demonstrated its advantageous error tolerance by showing an operation in a broad wavelength range from 920 to 980 nm,which is particularly relevant for quantum photonics due to efficient photon sources existing in this wavelength range.Our work highlights the importance of developing novel architectures of programmable photonics for information processing.

Modeling aggregate size distribution of eroded sediment resulting from rain-splash and raindrop impacted flow processes

Soil susceptibility to detachment and transport sub-processes of erosion is generally controled by the aggregate breakdown mechanism.Measuring particle size and aggregation to the estimate erodibility potential of soils is important under erosive rainfall conditions.The Aggregate Size Distribution（ASD）is one of the most important determinants of soil structure along with soil organic matter content for describing the efficiency of applied,sustainable management strategies.This study aimed to compare the performances of three different aggregate size distribution models to predict the characteristic aggregate size parameter(median diameter,D50)for eroded sediment from interrill erosion processes of RainSplash Transport（RST）and Raindrop Impacted Flow Transport（RIFT）.The ASDs of 1143 collected sediment samples from the RST and RIFT processes were measured and modeled by the Log-normal,Fractal,and Weibull approaches.The D50value,as a characteristic parameter for aggregate size distributions,derived from the cumulative ASD curve was compared for soils from different land use types and different slope and rainfall intensity conditions.The performance of each model was evaluated using the Mean Square Error（MSE）and Coefficient of Determination（R2）.The Weibull approach was the most accurate model showing the best fit with the lowest MSE values（0.0002≤MSE≤0.0048）and having the greatest R2values（0.936≤R2≤0.998）when compared with the Log-normal and Fractal models.Herewith,for semi-arid land use and soil,specific shape and scale parameters for the Weibull distribution,the respective ASDs were successfully re-generated for modeling the eroded sediment of the simulated RST and RIFT interill processes.

Coronary Artery Bypass with Myxedema

Introduction Hypothyroidism increases the risk of cardiovascular complications in patients scheduled for coronary artery bypass grafting. Atrial fibrillation is one of its cardiac complications. Case Report Our 45-year-old male patient was admitted to the Emergency Medicine Clinic of our hospital with chest pain that started in the left arm and extended to the chin 2 days ago. It was noted that the patient had hypothyroidism, but did not have any medication for the disease. On physical examination, dry and pale skin, sparse coarse hair, non-pitting edema were diagnosed with acute coronary artery disease. No signs of ischemia were observed on the ECG at the time of admission, but bradycardic sinus rhythm was recorded. The patient was started to be followed up with the diagnosis of NON-ST myocardial infarction. Nitroglycerin 0.25 - 2 mcgr/h and morphine 2 mg were administered intravenously to the patient whose anginal complaints continued after admission. Anginal complaint continued was operated in 1:1 mode by attaching an intraaortic balloon pump (Maquet Sensation 7Fr 40 cc, Datascope CS300 console) via the left femoral artery. Surgery procedure: The patient was performed with median sternotomi (aortic, two-stage cannulation). While the patient was cooled to 32 degrees and given blood cardioplegia (St. Thomas II) and applied topical cold. After distal anastomoses were performed with saphenous vein graft. Total cross-clamp time was 60 min. Epinephrine was given for bradycardia sinus rhythm. No cardiovascular complications were encountered while being followed in the intensive care unit. The patient was discharged on the 6th postoperative day. Conlucion: Our case, who was taken to emergency CABG operation with myxedema, was discharged without any cardiovascular, respiratory or metabolic complications both in the perioperative and postoperative periods. In this case, the major stress caused by cardiovascular surgery was successfully overcome by both the cardiovascular surgery team and the anesthesiology team.

针对传统数据挖掘方法中对于估计设备状态假设条件过多的问题,提出了基于马氏田口法(mahalanobis-taguchi system,MTS)的设备状态特征变量识别与优选方法。将马氏距离作为描述空间的单位量,基于正常样本建立特征变量基准空间;通过特征变量正常样本与异常样本马氏距离的对比对基准空间的有效性进行验证;利用正交表和信噪比分析对特征变量进行优选,剔除对状态识别结果影响不显著的特征变量;以微型数控铣床主轴上的滚动轴承为例搭建实验平台,证明通过该方法所选特征变量对滚轴运行状态具有较强的表征能力。

Morphological and Physico-Chemical Characteristics and Classification of Vertisol Developed on Deltaic Plain

The name of Vertisol is derived from Latin “vertere” meaning to invert. This case restricts development of soil horizons in profile. These soils have the capacity to swell and shrink, inducing cracks in the upper parts of the soil and distinctive soil structure throughout the soil. The formation of these specific features are caused by a heavy texture, a dominance of swelling clay in the fine fraction and marked changes in moisture content. The swell-shrink behavior is attributed to the wetting and drying of the soil mass. In this study, morphology, physico-chemical characteristics and classification of vertisols that were formed on alluvial delta plains, were investigated. Those soils formed on the Bafra Plain found in the K?z?l?rmak Delta and located in the central Black Sea region of Turkey. All studied Vertisols are characterised by a dark colour in surface soil, a heavy clayey texture, hardpan formation under top soil (high bulk density a high compaction) and very high COLE values. In addition, they have deep wide-opened desiccation cracks at the surface, slickensides at the middle part of the profiles and a poor differentiation of their horizons. Physico-chemically, the studied soils are slightly basic to very basic, non-saline and poor in organic matter, which is slightly higher in the surface horizon. In addition, cation exchange capacity, sum of exchangeable bases and base saturation of soils are very high. On the basis of morphological and physicochemical analysis, soil profiles were classified as Sodic Haplustert, Typic Calciaquert, Sodic Calciustert according to Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 1975 and 1999) and as Sodic Vertisol and Calcic Vertisol according to FAO/ISRIC (2006) classification systems.

Osteitis Condensans Ilii:Case Report

Back pain is one of the most frequent complaints during the last period of pregnancy. In a small group of patients the persistent pain during the postpartum period may be secondary to osteitis condensans ilii (OCI), and rarely can occur suddenly in the elderly. OKI is a rare benign pathology, low back or buttock pain should be suspected in patients coming from. Although the exact etiology is unknown, the most accepted hypothesis, get on the sacroiliac joint, depending on the mechanical stress, changes may develop in the iliac bone. In practice, It is important to recognise this disease as it can be potentially confused with similar causes of axial low back pain such as seronegative spondyloarthropathy, metastatic disease, or sacroilitis. Here two woman patients with low back pain and buttock pain secondary to unilateral an uncommon benign condition called osteitis condensans ilii is presented. This report emphasis the salient features and the differential diagnosis in diagnosing and managing this rare pathology.
