Global demand for electricity is growing significantly in developing *** energy accounts for barely 3%of total energy consumption in *** of renewable energy,***,are increasingly being acknowledged as viable supply-side choices for *** article presents a grid-connected microgrid design based on meteorological data for a local community situated in Mohammadpur,*** study presents a feasible design of a system that gives the lowest cost of energy production and emissions that is evaluated using software named Hybrid Optimization Multiple Energy Resources(HOMER Pro).Comparison and assessment of the net present cost,cost of energy,operating cost and environmental emission for five different feasible microgrids are analysed concerning real-time ***,a suitable case is sorted out and proposed for the local community for *** proposed case offers a$0.0442/kWh cost of energy,which is~32%cheaper than the current rate with a 57.5%renewable fraction and a payback period of 16.86 *** of this local community will have access to considerably more clean energy at a lower price by this study;also this design could sell the excess energy to the grid to avoid frequent electricity outages.

Water and sediment quality parameters in the Chalan Beel, the largest wetland of Bangladesh

A study was conducted to investigate the status of the water and sediment quality in the Chalan Beel——a major fresh water fish reservoir of the country for a period of one year from July 2007 to June 2008. The mean values of water quality parameters(depth: 214.73±152.22 cm, temperature 27.68±4.26℃, transparency 123±82 cm, p H 9.7±0.47, total alkalinity 137±42 mg/L, conductivity 307±147 μs/cm, total dissolved solids 183±89 mg/L, ammonia-N 0.27±0.39 mg/L, nitrate-N 0.09±0.07 mg/L, phosphate-P 2.01±2.53 mg/L) and sediment quality parameters(p H 7.21±0.35, organic matter 2.59±0.52%, total nitrogen 0.09±0.04%, available phosphorus 5.4±3.6 Meq./100 g and exchangeable potassium 0.43±0.14 Meq./100 g) were within the range recommended for most of the inland fishes of Bangladesh. Although the water and sediment quality parameters except ammonia and phosphate are in the suitable range, the overall results suggest that better management techniques should be practiced in order to overcome the declining trend of associated aquatic life(fauna and flora) of this important fresh water body of Bangladesh.

Achieving Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks Using Dynamic Channel Polling and Packet Concatenation

There has been a significant interest of researchers to combine different schemes focused on optimizing energy performance while developing aMAC protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs).In this paper,we propose to integrate two cross-layer schemes:dynamic channel polling and packet concatenation using a recent asynchronous MAC protocol“Adaptive&Dynamic Polling MAC”(ADPMAC).ADP-MAC dynamically selects the polling interval distribution based on characterization of incoming traffic patterns using Coefficient of variation(CV).Packet Concatenation(PC)refers to combining the individually generated data packets into a single super packet and sending it at the polling ***,the Block Acknowledgement(BA)scheme has been developed for ADP-MAC to work in conjunction with the packet *** proposed schemes have been implemented in Tiny-OS for Mica2 platform and Avrora emulator has been used for conducting *** results have revealed that the performance both in terms of energy&packet loss improves when ADP-MAC is used in conjunction with the additional features of PC&***,the proposed scheme has been compared with a stateof-art packet concatenation primitive PiP(Packet-in-Packet).It has been observed that ADP-MAC supersedes the performance of PiP in terms of PDR(Packet Delivery Ratio)due to better management of synchronization between source and sink.

Genetic,Developmental and Temporal Variability in Nitrate Accumulation and Nitrate Reductase Activity in Medicinal Herb Andrographis paniculata

There is a growing concern over the presence of high concentrations of nitrate in orally consumed herbal remedies. Since nitrate accumulation in the plant body can vary with spatial location in plant and plant development and temporally with photoperiod, understanding the relations between these factors and nitrate contents in the consumed herbs are vital for the development of agrotechnical strategies for nitrate avoidance. Therefore, the distribution profiles of nitrate content and nitrate reductase （NR） activity were analyzed in 14 accessions of Andrographis paniculata （Burm.f.） Wall. ex Nees., a medicinal plant widely used as a component of many herbal teas and medicinal infusions. Significant variation in nitrate accumulation in the plant was observed between the accessions, and most contained nitrate levels beyond the safety limit recommended according to the European Commission＇s Scientific Committee on Food. Nitrate content increased with plant development and leaf age, and that in leaf segment was higher in the middle of the leaf than at its tip or base; the nitrate concentration in plant organ followed the order of petiole 〉 leaf 〉 stem, and it was lower at mid-day than in the early morning or evening. Gradients of NR activity were negatively correlated with nitrate content in all studied temporal and spatial profiles. Identification of the characteristic spatial and developmental profiles of nitrate accumulation and NR activity in A. paniculata can guide the development of harvest strategies, aiming at minimizing nitrate contents in the consumed herbal tissue.

H pylori seroprevalence in patients with lung cancer

AIM: To assess H pylori seroprevalence in lung cancer and determine whether there is a potential association between lung cancer and H pylori infection. METHODS: The study was conducted on forty consecutive patients with lung cancer, confirmed by pathology (32 men, 8 women; mean age 55.50 ± 11.91 years, range 16-77 years). Forty healthy subjects (25 men, 15 women; mean age 43.08 ± 12.60 years, range 20-79 years) from the patients’ family members were matched to each case subject on the basis of age and socioeconomic status. H pylori infection was detected with a commercially available immunoglobulin G (IgG) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Trinity kit, Biotech co., USA), previously validated in adults (86% sensitivity, 96% specificity) against a gold standard of culture and histology. RESULTS: H pylori seropositivity was present in 52.5% of patients with lung cancer in comparison to 45.0% of healthy control subjects. Although H pylori seropositivity was more frequent in lung cancer patients than in controls, the difference did not reach statistical significance (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 0.56-3.25; P = 0.65). In addition, there was no significant difference between cases and controls in terms of gastrointestinal symptoms. CONCLUSION: The earlier described association between H pylori infection and lung cancer was not supported in this study. Further studies with larger sample sizes should be undertaken to assess the frequency of H pylori infection in patients with lung cancer and their potential association.

Hepatic Histoplasmosis: An Update

Histoplasma capsulatum is the most common cause of en-demic mycosis in developing countries. It is a self-limited and asymptomatic disease in immunocompetent individu-als but remains a frequent cause of opportunistic infection in patients with compromised immune status. Liver in-volvement as a part of disseminated histoplasmosis is well known. However, liver infection as a primary manifestation of histoplasmosis without evidence of primary lung involve-ment is rare. In conclusion, clinicians should be aware of isolated histoplasmosis affecting the hepatobiliary system, and careful evaluation is warranted to confirm the diagno-sis. Given the appropriate clinical context, histoplasmosis should be considered in both immunocompetent and immu-nocompromised patients, regardless of pulmonary symp-toms, in non endemic as well as endemic areas.

Immune mechanisms and immuno -therapy in sepsis:where do we stand ?

Sepsis and septic shock have continued to produce significant morbidity and mortality, in recent times, in acutely injured patients as well as patients in the intensive care units despite advances in antibiotic therapy and in the cardi ovascular and pulmonary support for these patients. This emphasizes the need to gain a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of the pathogenesis of sepsis syndrome in the critically ill or injured patients. The present knowled ge of the mechanisms of septic pathogenesis clearly indicates involvement of mod ulations in the functions of the cells of body's immune defense system, namely, monocytes/macrophages, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and lymphocytes. Most of su ch knowledge has been derived from laboratory experiments in animal models of se ptic injury, or from studies of immune-system cells, in vitro. Clinical stud ies have also supported the role of immune perturbations. Yet, to date, very few the rapeutic approaches are available to effectively counter the sepsis-related immu ne disturbances. Functional modulations in the immune system cells, in the injured/septic hos ts, can exert not only adaptive/beneficial effects but also profoundly adverse effects on the non-immune-system cells such as endothelial, epithelial, neurona l, endocrine, neuro-endocrine, smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscl e cells. The primary functional modulation in the immune-system cells after inju ry or with critical illness is activation of such cells via molecules from pat hogens, for example, lipopolysaccharide from gram negative organisms, lipoteic hoic acid/peptidoglycan from gram positive organisms, or zymosan from fungi. Suc h pathogenic molecules activate monocytes and tissue macrophages to result in th e expression and release of cytokine mediators (TNFα, IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, and IL- 10), as well as certain lipid mediators (PGE2, LTB4, PAF).
