A substantial amount of Earth’s water is inadequate for human consumption while local demand is outstripping traditional supplies in many world regions;thereby,brackish and seawater treatment has become a *** investigation suggested a complete design of an RO-based desalination filter with a multilayer biomimetic *** study demonstrated a comprehensive method for experimentally fabricating a proprietary biomaterial-based multilayer nano-porous *** analysis revealed that Silk Nano-Fibril(SNF)and Hydroxyapatite(HAP)extracted from Bombyx Mori silkworm cocoons may be utilized to manufacture highly methodical multilayer membranes by incorporating protein-self-assembly and ***’s aquaporin layer containing lipid-bilayers has rapid water permeability and high efficacy at eliminating salt ions and *** 4µm thick SNF/HAP membrane showed a considerable decrease in salinity,with a salt rejection of 93.33%.The proposed membrane had a saline water permeability of 6.58 LMH/bar,almost 61.09%higher than conventional TFC *** barrier and spiral-wrapped filter architecture of the membrane enable low fouling and self-cleaning *** schematic filter design and biomimetic fabrication of the SNF/HAP membrane have formulated a conceptual framework that might direct to the broad-scale,low-cost RO water purification filters,increasing the efficiency of water desalination and boosting the effectiveness of water treatment technologies to reduce potable water scarcity.

Social Business in Bangladesh: A Study on Grameen Danone Shokti+ Yogurt

Social business is becoming popular worldwide as a sustainable and innovative solution to tackling pressing social problems. The Grameen Danone Food Ltd. (GDFL) Shokti+ yogurt business was chosen as a social business case study. The study described GDFL Shokti+ yogurt production, pricing, and distribution process, elucidated consumers’ perception of the Shokti+ yogurt, identified the major problems faced by the consumers, and proposed probable solutions to popularize the yogurt among the consumers. The study’s objectives were achieved using descriptive statistics based on a quantitative survey of 60 consumers. The study found that Shokti+ yogurt is distributed primarily through four channels: modern model, urban trade, rural trade, and direct trade. The study revealed that non-poor households consume more Shokti+ yogurt than poor households. The findings showed that about 78% and 95% of respondents were satisfied with the yogurt quality and availability, respectively. About 17% of respondents perceived that Shokti+ yogurt is superior to regular yogurt. However, about 58% of respondents claimed that the price is higher than the amount and quality offered. Excessive liquidity, increased price, and lack of trust in the nutritional quality of yogurt were some major problems identified by the consumers. The study proposed certain recommendations such as maintaining the consistency of the yogurt, increasing the amount of yogurt sold, making the yogurt more affordable for poor consumers, and raising awareness about its nutritional benefits for popularizing Shokti+ yogurt in Bangladesh.

Design and Optimization of Photonic Crystal Fiber for Liquid Sensing Applications

This paper proposes a hexagonal photonic crystal fiber （H-PCF） structure with high relative sensitivity for liquid sensing; in which both core and cladding are microstructures. Numerical investigation is carried out by employing the full vectorial finite element method （FEM）. The analysis has been done in four stages of the proposed structure. The investigation shows that the proposed structure achieves higher relative sensitivity by increasing the diameter of the innermost ring air holes in the cladding. Moreover, placing a single channel instead of using a group of tiny channels increases the relative sensitivity effectively. Investigating the effects of different parameters, the optimized structure shows significantly higher relative sensitivity with a low confinement loss.

Electromigration is a main challenge in the pursuit of power electronics, because physical limit to increase current density in power electronics is electromigration (EM), whereas much higher electrical current and voltage are required for power electronics packaging. So the effect of EM is an important issue in applications where high current densities are used, such as in microelectronics and related structures (e.g., Power ICs). Since the structure size of integrated circuits (ICs) decreases and the practical significance of this effect increases, the result is EM failure. On the other hand, in the next generation power electronics technology electrical current density is expected to exceed 107 A/cm2 which is another challenge. This review work has been carried out to identify the mechanism of EM damage in power electronics (e.g., pure metallization and solder joints) and also how to control this kind of damage.

Background: Atrial fibrillation commonly occurs following cardiac surgery, particularly after coronary artery bypass grafting. Magnesium, known for its stabilizing effect on cell membranes, has shown promise in preventing postoperative atrial fibrillation. This study aimed to assess the impact of intravenous magnesium infusion in preventing atrial fibrillation after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, where maintaining stable cell membranes is crucial in averting this complication. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, from March 2020 to February 2022. Sixty-six patients who underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting were enrolled and divided into two groups. Group A (n = 33) received intravenous magnesium sulfate (10 mmol/2.47gm) for three days after surgery, while Group B (n = 33) did not receive magnesium sulfate. Postoperative atrial fibrillation occurrence in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within three days after surgery was evaluated using convenient sampling. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS version 26.0, utilizing independent Student’s t-test for continuous data and Chi-square and Fisher’s exact test for categorical data. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: No significant differences in age or gender were observed between the two groups. Group B exhibited significantly lower magnesium levels than Group A on the 0th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd days post-surgery. Additionally, Group B experienced a higher incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation, longer ICU stays, and two mortalities. The study did not detect any adverse effects associated with magnesium infusion. Conclusion: It has been demonstrated that administering magnesium intravenously after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting can lower the chances of developing atrial fibrillation. Pattern of Presentation of Iatrogenic Biliary Injury Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Background: Cholecystectomy is one of the most now common abdominal surgeries performed every day. The incidence of bile duct injury (BDI) following open cholecystectomy is only 0.1% - 0.2%. After the introduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the incidence has gone up to 0.4% - 0.7%. The present study is a prospective analysis of all patients with bile duct injury who were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital during or at a variable period following cholecystectomy. Methods: To determine the pattern of presentation of iatrogenic biliary injury following cholecystectomy in the department of surgery of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, a total of 30 patients were purposively selected from May 2018 to November 2018. Patient particulars, records of physical and clinical evaluation, and operative details were collected by individual researchers. Data analysis was done by SPSS for windows version 21. Results: BDI was found very common among the age group 21 - 30 yrs (36%) and female dominant (60%). Majority of the patients presented with abdominal pain (96%), intra-abdominal collection (88%), biliary peritonitis (68%), cholangitis (60%), and obstructive jaundice (40%), and biliary fistula (40%). Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (84%) was the principal cause of biliary injury in our study. 48% of patients experienced clinical features within 7 days post-cholecystectomy. Per-operative diagnosis was done in only 12% of cases. 44% of patients in this study were recognized as Bismuth grade-3, followed by 36%, grade-2 patients. Management outcomes included wound infection (41.66%), minor bile leak (25%), peritonitis (8.33%), and renal impairment (8.33%). Conclusion: The effect of BDI is an extremely distressful clinical condition for the patients and their family members, hence proper care and management protocol should be followed.
