3-Bromopyruvate(3BP) is a new, promising anticancer alkylating agent with several notable functions. In addition to inhibiting key glycolysis enzymes including hexokinase II and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), 3BP also selectively inhibits mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, angiogenesis, and energy production in cancer cells. Moreover, 3BP induces hydrogen peroxide generation in cancer cells(oxidative stress effect) and competes with the LDH substrates pyruvate and lactate. There is only one published human clinical study showing that 3BP was effective in treating fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. LDH is a good measure for tumor evaluation and predicts the outcome of treatment better than the presence of a residual tumor mass. According to the Warburg effect, LDH is responsible for lactate synthesis, which facilitates cancer cell survival, progression, aggressiveness, metastasis, and angiogenesis. Lactate produced through LDH activity fuels aerobic cell populations inside tumors via metabolic symbiosis. In melanoma, the most deadly skin cancer, 3BP induced necrotic cell death in sensitive cells, whereas high glutathione(GSH) content made other melanoma cells resistant to 3BP. Concurrent use of a GSH depletor with 3BP killed resistant melanoma cells. Survival of melanoma patients was inversely associated with high serum LDH levels, which was reported to be highly predictive of melanoma treatment in randomized clinical trials. Here, we report a 28-year-old man presented with stage IV metastatic melanoma affecting the back, left pleura, and lung. The disease caused total destruction of the left lung and a high serum LDH level(4,283 U/L). After ethics committee approval and written patient consent, the patient received 3BP intravenous infusions(1-2.2 mg/kg), but the anticancer effect was minimal as indicated by a high serum LDH level. 英语是世界上最常用的语言,如今,英语在全球的教育和商业中扮演着重要角色。这种全球意义使英语受到阿拉伯人和中国人的特别关注。尽管已经进行了许多关于阿拉伯学生在本国或者英语国家学习英语时遇到的困难的研究,但他们在向中国这样的非英语国家的英语学习问题仍鲜有人涉及。本研究就是针对在华阿拉伯研究生英语口语学习中存在的问题进行研究,以期为阿拉伯研究生在中国乃至其他非英语国家学习英语口语提供帮助。本研究调查了在华阿拉伯研究生的英语学习行为,测试了阿拉伯研究生对英语口语学习策略的反应。本研究根据牛津大学(Oxford)1990年的《语言学习策略清单》(SILL)设计问卷并收集了数据该《策略清单》主要包括六类策略,如记忆、认知、补偿、元认知、情感和社交语言学习策略,通过描述性统计数据进行分析。居住在中国不同城市的170名在华阿拉伯研究生(81名女性和89名男性)参加了该问卷调查。根据参与者的回答平均值,Oxford 1990将参与者分为三类:学习语言策略的低,中或高用户。按照这一标准,在华阿拉伯研究生平均回答值为3.18,可以被视为学习策略的中级用户。数据还表明在华阿拉伯研究生使用记忆策略的频率最低。因此,语言教师可能需要使用不同方法增加英语词汇量,以此来刺激学生记忆。此外,在华阿拉伯研究生使用情感策略的平均值为2.81,这表明了在教学过程中课堂氛围对学习效果影响很大。此外,元认知策略在阿拉伯研究生中被是最常用的,平均得分3.65。本研究结果可以为在非英语母语国家的学生学习英语指明相应的策略和方法,从而促进了人们之间的沟通交流,使得阿拉伯世界和其他国家联系更加紧密,互通友谊。

The Gulf of Aqaba (GOA) is unique as it contains significant percentage of the world’s natural marine biodiversity. This unique environment is potentially vulnerable to pollution particularly at its northern tip. One of the major activities affecting the environment of the gulf is the man-made desalination plants that abstract sea water and dispose desalinated brine. In this context, the paper discusses the impact of the abstract and disposal activities on the GOA environment. A 3D hydrodynamic model was developed to cover the GOA. Relevant data were collected for 3D hydrodynamic modeling construction. Delft-3D model developed by Deltares was applied in this study. The 3D model reliability was confirmed since the model results have revealed the existence of a structure of primary eddies along the axis of the Gulf which was previously reported by different researchers. Further numerical simulations were carried out by incorporating various alternatives of seawater abstraction and desalinated brine disposal off the north and north east coast of the GOA. The developed GOA hydrodynamic model, at the present stage, is preliminary where the results provide qualitative assessment on the potential impacts on the water circulation. Accordingly, this study is considered a pace ahead for a better model development and validation in the future studies.

Predictors of Vascular Calcification in Hemodialysis Patients

Background: The prevalence of both cardiovascular mortality and vascular calcification is much higher in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) than in the general population so early detection and intervention of VC may prevent or delay the progression and achieve improved patient outcomes. Objectives: To detect different predictors of vascular calcification in haemodialysis patients. Methods: This was a cross sectional observational study that included 85 patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) on regular dialysis 47 males and 38 females ranged between 18 and 80 years old selected from Nephrology Unit, Internal Medicine Department, Menoufia University Hospital from April 2019 to May 2020. Serum calcium, phosphorus, alkhaline phosphatase, intact PTH, serum Matrix GLA protein, vitamin D and non-contrast CT for calcium scoring of femoral arteries were performed. Results: There was a significant correlation between age of the patient by years (p value 0.0001), serum calcium (p value 0.0001), phosphate (0.0001), calcium phosphate products (p value 0.0001) and alkhaline phosphatase (0.0001), and vascular calcification score detected by non-contrast CT on femoral arteries and negative correlation between serum Matrix GLA protein p value 0.0001) and the detected calcification score;the lower the MGP level the higher calcification score while there was no correlation between body mass index (BMI) (p value 0.021) intact PTH (p value 0.117), serum vitamin D level (p value 0.643), serum albumin (p value 0.643), serum haemoglobin (p value 0.257) and duration of dialysis (p value 0.260) and the detected score. Serum phosphate and calcium phosphorus product are independent risk factors for vascular calcification severity in haemodialysis patients. 小熊猫栖息于喜马拉雅与横断山脉,是亚洲濒危物种。中国的小熊猫谱系已登记圈养小熊猫个体968只,现有存活个体355只(2013年),然而,现有谱系中存在部分信息不明确的问题。为此,我们选择19对小熊猫特异性引物对41只圈养小熊猫进行微卫星扩增,并分析其亲缘关系。将获取的亲子鉴定结果,结合种群原始记录信息,利用Pedigraph软件构建福州圈养小熊猫的种群遗传谱系图。结果表明:在母子关系确实的情况下,19个基因座位的联合父权排除概率为0.99999968;利用6个已知双亲的后代检验19个基因座位的可信度,后代与双亲的基因型完全符合孟德尔遗传定律,表明19个基因座位能有效确认小熊猫的亲权关系。应用19个微卫星标记成功地为15个后代找到了生物学父亲。尽管一些雌性个体在繁殖期有多重交配的行为,亲子鉴定的结果显示同一窝小熊猫均来自单一父权。基因型比对结果表明7对双胞胎均属于异卵双生子。福州种群的后代中除#920和#921外,其余均源于#487或#898两只雄性,表明不同个体参与繁殖的机会不均等。因此,利用现代繁殖技术,加强濒危野动物种群管理,科学制定繁殖计划具有积极的现实意义。
