Classification of Urban Parks and their Regional Characteristics in Dhaka City, Bangladesh

Unplanned urbanization has caused serious ecological imbalances in Dhaka city. This study investigates the efficiency and utilization of urban green space especially parks of Dhaka city. The case study site covers urban parks of Dhaka metropolitan area of Bangladesh. Two aspects （physical and social） were applied for this study. For physical aspect, methods were used RS （Remote Sensing） and GIS （Geographic Information System） of three periods of images （Dhaka city）. And for social aspect, methods were used questionnaire survey, observation, photographs, sketch and previous information about parks. After calculating all data result was showed by maps using GIS. For the changing pattern of green space of periods 1972, 1989 and 2010, result showed that the variation of the green space changes rate was high and gradually green space deceased and build up area increased in Dhaka city. Again according to physical size, parks of Dhaka city were classified into four types： Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large parks. Small parks of Dhaka city were situated beside the residential area and were used as daily purpose. Medium parks were located beside commercial area and its use was for daily and weekly. Large parks were placed at city center and only one extra large park was found outer range of city area. In large parks, people mainly visited monthly or occasionally. Moreover, the spatial-temporal changes of images showed the present status of green space of the city. The consequence of the study reveals that the utilization of park was controlled by various factors in Dhaka city.

Optimizing a Long-Lived Transaction with Verification Function

We have considered a method called Enhanced Rollback Migration Protocol, which potentially has the effects of compressing the period of compensations in a long-lived transaction, since before. In general, a compensation transaction can recover an irregular status of a long-lived transaction into the original status without holding unnecessary resources by making its consistency tentatively loose. However, it has also been pointed out that there is a difficulty of maintaining the isolation between a pair of transactions when executed in parallel. In particular, this could be more prominent under modernized scalable cloud environments. Thus, there is a proposal for concurrency control for the service level. However, there is still another risk that more computer resources will be consumed than actually necessary and an unnecessary stagnation of the processing will be caused if concurrency control is naively applied without careful consideration. Therefore, we need to implement a functionality which can optimize the processing of a long-lived transaction by selecting a suitable method between concurrency control and compensation transactions. In this paper, we propose a method in which optimistic concurrency control is applied for long-lived transactions. Furthermore, a pair of verification phases is carried out. At the beginning from a safe point, an attempt of verification is done. Then if the difficulty of isolation on a long-lived transaction executed under a competitive situation is estimated, concurrency control for the service level is applied. Alternatively, a long-lived transaction without any concurrency control is executed. At the next reachable safe point, another attempt of verification is performed. Then if a failure of serialization is detected, a set of compensation transactions is invoked to recover the original long-lived transaction by returning to the first safe point. The design of large disk array architectures leads to interesting combinatorial problems. Minimizing the number of disk operations when writing to consecutive disks leads to the concept of “cluttered orderings” which were introduced for the complete graph by Cohen et al. (2001). Mueller et al. (2005) adapted the concept of wrapped Δ-labellings to the complete bipartite case. In this paper, we give some sequence in order to generate wrapped Δ-labellings as cluttered orderings for the complete bipartite graph. New sequence we give is different from the sequences Mueller et al. gave, though the same graphs in which these sequences are labeled.

Concordance of ulcerative colitis in monozygotic twin sisters

The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease is multifacto rial and appears to combine both genetic and environmental factors. We experienced here a rare occurrence of woman monozygotic twins with ulcerative colitis (UC). A 45-year-old woman (the elder monozygotic twin) was admitted to our hospital because of bloody diarrhea occurring over 10 times per day, abdominal pain and fever. She was diagnosed as UC at the age of 22, and repeated the relapse and remission. She was diagnosed as relapse of UC and total colitis type. Her younger monozygotic twin sister also suffered from UC at the age of 22. Human leukocyte antigen was examined serologically with DNA type in both patients. DRB1*1502, which was previously shown to be dominant in Japanese patients with UC, was not observed in this case. Although the concordance in monozygotic twin in UC is reported to be 6.3-18.8%, the concordant case like this is relatively rare. We report this rare case of UC and the previously reported cases are also discussed.

Nurses' and students' perception of risk from medical practices

Objectives: To determine the risk perceptions of a series of medical practices in non-expert (un-dergraduates) and expert (nurses) ***: Four hundred and forty-seven nurses and 246 undergraduate students participated in this study. They all answered questionnaires about the risk dimensions and acceptance for medical practices. Results: An exploratory factor analysis on participants' answers to various dimensions of risk yielded a two-factor structure for risk perception in both samples: for nurses, the factors were"Unknown"and"Dread,"while for students, they were"Dread"and"Lack of Independence."For both nurses and stu-dents, the factor scores of Dread negatively related to individual risk acceptance of medical practices. Furthermore, nurses tended to be more accepting of practices that they knew well (i.e., low Unknown scale scores). For students, the subscale scores of the Lack of Independence factor negatively related to individual risk acceptance only for health examination practices. Nurses conceived risks more correctly and concretely compared to students. This was especially pronounced for practices related to medication use. Conclusions: Although both nurses and students conceived various risk contents from medical practices, their conceptions still differed. Knowledge of these differences in the structure of risk perception and conceived risk contents of various medical practices between nurses and students could be utilized to improve risk communication in clinical practice.

Polysilane/C60-based solar cells were fabricated and investigated. Two-types of devices with bulk heterojunction and heterojunction structures were examined and characterized. Addition of silicon-based polymer to the organic solar cells improved the conversion efficiency by wide optical absorption and high carrier mobility. Microstructures of the solar cells were investigated by using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Energy levels in the present solar cells were discussed.

Panglao is a small island in the central part of the Philippines and well-known for its world-class beaches and coral reefs. These attract millions of tourists each year thus providing business opportunities and employment, a significant source of revenue for the local economy. Moreover, this island lies in a region with high biodiversity. However, the escalating activity is so alarming that the negative effect to the local environment is very much prevalent but not easily perceivable. Analysis and measurement of physico-chemical parameters of the groundwater revealed high levels of human-induced contaminants. This subterranean pollution was attributable to the leakage of septic tanks, artificial application of disinfectants as well as infiltration of saltwater from the ocean due to over-extraction of groundwater in order to meet the increasing demand for water. The community within the area was oblivious because human impacts to the environment appear to be virtually absent. These findings clearly suggest the concealed vulnerability of the groundwater resources from human activities. Higher standard for the coastal development plan, strong implementation of environmental policy and immediate government action is deemed necessary.
