Synthesis and Ultrasonic Characterization of Cu/PVP Nanoparticles-Polymer Suspensions

A polymer colloidal solution having dispersed nanoparticles of Cu metal has been developed using a novel chemical method. Colloidal solutions of representative concentrations of 0.2 to 2.0 wt% Cu-nanoparticles con-tents in the primary solutions were prepared to study the modified ultrasonic attenuation and ultrasonic velocity in polyvinyl alcohol (PVP) polymer molecules on incorporating the Cu-nanoparticles. The synthesized copper metal nanoparticles dispersed in the polymer solutions were characterized by UV-Visible absorption spectros-copy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanofluid sample showed a symmetrical peak at 592 nm due to the surface plasmon resonance of the copper nanoparticles. XRD results confirmed that copper nanoparticles were crystalline in the colloidal solution. The TEM micrograph revealed spherical copper nanoparticles having diameter in the range 10 - 40 nm. A characteristic behaviour of the ultra-sonic velocity and the attenuation are observed at the particular temperature/particle concentration. It reveals that the colloidal suspension occurs in divided groups in the small micelles. The results are discussed in correlation with the thermophysical properties predicting the enhanced thermal conductivity of the samples.

Aim: The prognosis for patients with advanced Gallbladder carcinoma is poor. Due to unresectability and relatively ineffective chemotherapy available, a need exists for effective chemotherapeutic regimen. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety profile of 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin and paclitaxel in patients with advanced Gallbladder cancer. Material and Methods: From January 2002 to July 2004, 40 patients of advanced carcinoma Gallbladder received 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin and paclitaxel. On day 1, paclitaxel was given (150 mg/m2), cisplatin was given on day 2 (50 mg/m2) and 5-fluorouracil was given from day 1 to day 3 (500 mg/m2). This cycle was repeated every three weeks and patient assessment was done. Results: Forty patients were enrolled in this study. Thirty-five were assessed for response. Five patients were lost in follow up. There were thirty females and ten males. A median of three cycles of treatment (range one to seven) was administered. Two patients achieved complete response and eleven had partial responses giving an overall response rate of 32.5% in the intention-to-treat population (95% confidence interval 11.1% to 46.5%). The median response duration was 5.3 months. The median time to progression and overall survival was 4.1 months and 11.2 months, respectively. The most common grade 3 adverse effects were neutropenia (30%), nausea (20%), vomiting (15%), diarrhea (10%), stomatitis (5%), and peripheral neuropathy (5%). Only one case had febrile neutropenia. There was no treatment related death. Conclusions: The combination of 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin and paclitaxel has promising anti-tumor activity and is well tolerated in patients with advanced and metastatic Gallbladder cancer.

The design of space-efficient support hardware for built-in self-testing is of great significance in very large scale integration circuits and systems, particularly in view of the paradigm shift in recent times from system-on-board to system-on-chip technology. The subject paper proposes a new approach to designing aliasing-free or zero-aliasing space compaction hardware targeting specifically embedded cores-based system-on-chips for single stuck-line faults extending well-known concept from conventional switching theory, viz. that of compatibility relation as used in the minimization of incomplete sequential machines. For a pair of response outputs of the circuit under test, the method introduces the notion of fault detection compatibility and conditional fault detection compatibility (conditional upon some other response output pair being simultaneously fault detection compatible) with respect to two-input XOR/XNOR logic. The process is illustrated with design details of space compressors for the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems or ISCAS 85 combinational and ISCAS 89 full-scan sequential benchmark circuits using simulation programs ATALANTA and FSIM, attesting to the usefulness of the technique for its relative simplicity, resultant low area overhead and full fault coverage for single stuck-line faults, thus making it suitable in commercial design environments.

Impact of Elevated CO<sub>2</sub>on Wheat Growth and Yield under Free Air CO<sub>2</sub>Enrichment

Impact of elevated CO2 (free air CO2 enrichment) was studied on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var Kundan) growth, yield and proteome. Elevated CO2 significantly impacted both underground (+24%) and aboveground (+15%) biomass. Grain weight/plant and harvest index were increased by 35% and 11.4%, respectively under high CO2. On the other hand, seed protein content was decreased by 19% under CO2 enrichment while seed starch and soluble sugar contents were increased by 8% and 23%, respectively. Wheat leaf proteomics revealed that 50 proteins were showing differential expression. Twenty proteins were more abundant while 30 were less abundant. Thirty two proteins were identified by MALDI TOF TOF. More abundant proteins were related to defense, photosynthesis, energy metabolism etc. While less abundant proteins were related to glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. Wheat grain proteomics revealed that out of 49 differentially abundant proteins, 24 were more in abundance and 25 were less in abundance in wheat grains under eCO2 condition. Thirty three proteins were identified and functionally characterized. They were found to be involved mainly in carbon metabolism, storage, defence and proteolysis. Gluten proteins are the major component of wheat storage proteins. Our results showed that both high and low molecular weight glutenins were more in eCO2 wheat seeds while there was no change in gliadin evels. This might alter wheat dough strength. Concentration of grain Cr and As was increased at eCO2 while that of Fe, Cu, Zn and Se were found to be decreased. Dynamics of carbon utilization and metabolic abilities of soil microbes under eCO2 were significantly altered. Our study showed that altered wheat seed composition is cause for concern vis-à-vis nutrition and health and for industries which may have implications for agriculturally dominated country like India.
