Liquefaction proneness of stratified sand-silt layers based on cyclic triaxial tests

Most studies on liquefaction have addressed homogeneous soil strata using sand or sand with fine content without considering soil *** this study,cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on the stratified sand specimens embedded with the silt layers to investigate the liquefaction failures and void-redistribution at confining stress of 100 kPa under stress-controlled *** loosening of underlying sand mass and hindrance to pore-water flow caused localized bulging at the sand-silt *** is observed that at a silt thickness of 0.2H(H is the height of the specimen),nearly 187 load cycles were required to attain liquefaction,which was the highest among all the silt thicknesses with a single silt ***,0.2H is assumed as the optimum silt thickness(t_(opt)).The silt was placed at the top,middle and bottom of the specimen to understand the effect of silt layer *** to the increase in depth of the silt layer from the top position(capped soil state)to the bottom,the cycles to reach liquefaction(N_(cyc,L))increased 2.18 ***,when the number of silt layers increased from single to triple,there was an increase of about 880%in N_(cyc,L).The micro-characterization analysis of the soil specimens indicated silty materials transported in upper sections of the specimen due to the dissipated pore *** main parameters,including thickness(t),location(z),cyclic stress ratio(CSR),number of silt layers(n)and modified relative density(D_(r,m)),performed significantly in governing the lique-faction *** this,a multilinear regression model is developed based on critical parameters for prediction of N_(cyc,L).Furthermore,the developed constitutive model has been validated using the data from the present study and earlier findings.

Synthesis and characterization of rare earth metal doped tungsten trioxide photocatalyst for degradation of Rhodamine B dye

Nowadays,it is concern for researchers that due to high recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers in tungsten trioxide(WO_(3)) nanoparticles,the future applications are limited in the field of *** we attempt to synthesize tungsten trioxide nanoparticles with different doping concentrations of lanthanum i.e.2 wt%,4 wt%,6 wt% and 8 wt%.The synthesized samples were characterized by using various characterization techniques:X-ray diffraction(XRD),Raman spectroscopy,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),photoluminescence spectra(PL),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),energy dispersive X-ray(EDX) and UV-Vis ***_(3) retains its monoclinic structure even after doping which was confirmed by XRD *** helps to descry functional groups present in the *** size of nanoparticles was calculated by using *** confirms the absence of any impurity in the synthesized *** spectroscopy confirms the presence of a large number of imperfections induced in the lattice of WO_(3).The rate of recombination was analyzed by photoluminescence(PL) spectroscopy and is minimum in 4 wt% doping of *** optical bandgap was calculated using UV-Vis spectroscopy and becomes narrow along with the doping ***,it is found that doping of La in WO_(3) has considerably ameliorate the photocatalytic activity by reducing rate of recombination due to the trapping of electrons by defects introduced in the *** decolorization of Rhodamine B(RhB) dye was performed and the values of c/c_0 and rate constant(k) confirm that the 4 wt% doping shows maximum degradation *** kinetic study for photodegradation of Rhodamine B was done by using various kinetic models and results show that the reaction follows first order kinetics very ***,optimum doping of lanthanum increases the decolorization ability of WO_(3) towards RhB dye.

Parkinson’s disease(PD)is an age-related neurodegenerative ailment that affects dopamine-producing neurons in a specific area of the brain called the substantia nigra of the ventral *** is clinically characterized by movement disorder and marked with unusual synaptic protein alpha-synuclein accumulation in the *** date,only a few Food and Drug Administration(FDA)approved drugs are available on the market for the treatment of ***,these drugs show parasympathomimetic related adverse events and remarkably higher toxicity;hence,it is important to find more efficacious molecules to treat *** our study,We chosen 22 natural compounds as inhibitors that potentially block the alpha-synuclein clump-the pathological hallmark of PD-and provide new avenues for its *** of these molecules exhibited good pharmacokinetic behaviors,making them decisively favorable drug candidates to cure *** docking studies were performed to investigate the binding interactions between natural compounds and alpha-synuclein as anti-Parkinson drug *** the examined compounds,curcumin and piperine emerged as promising phytochemicals with the highest binding affinity,key residual stable bindings and showed a good inhibitory ***,the present study indicates that curcumin and piperine hold the potential to be developed as treatment options against *** validations are needed for insights into their mechanism of action and potential clinical application.

Antioxidant phenolic compounds from seeds of Hordeum vulgare *** diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Objective:To examine the effects of hydroalcoholic extract and fractions of Hordeum vulgare Linn.(***,Da Mai)on streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic nephropathy in Sprague-Dawley rat ***:The study involved preliminary phytochemical screening of extract and fractions,estimation of secondary metabolites,chromatographic studies using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC),antioxidant potential using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH),nitric oxide radical scavenging and reducing power methods along with the determination of potential against diabetic nephropathy in STZ-induced rat ***:The phytochemical evaluation of the hydroalcoholic extract of *** and fractions revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents such as alkaloids,saponins,tannins,flavonoids,and *** chromatographic analysis indicated the peak complementing marker compound epicatechin and significant antioxidant activity in the extract and aqueous ***-induced rats showed abnormal levels of serum albumin,creatinine,total cholesterol,blood urea nitrogen(BUN),and triglycerides,and urine albumin and creatinine,which returned to normal after 8 weeks of treatment with hydroalcoholic extract(400 mg/kg)and aqueous fraction(50 mg/kg)of ***:Hydroalcoholic extract(400 mg/kg)and aqueous fraction(50 mg/kg)of *** have significant antioxidant potential and positive effects on diabetic *** fractionation and optimization increase the concentration of polyphenols in aqueous extract,causing a decrease in the dose required for effects against diabetic nephropathy.

Novel synthesis with an atomized microemulsion technique and characterization of nano-calcium carbonate(CaCO_3)/poly(methyl methacrylate) core-shell nanoparticles

The synthesis of hard-core/soft-shell calcium carbonate （CaCO3）/poly（methyl methacrylate）（PMMA） hybrid structured nanoparticles （〈100nm） by an atomized microemulsion polymerization process is reported. The polymer chains were anchored onto the surface of nano-CaCO3 through use of a cou- pling agent, triethoxyvinyl silane （TEVS）. Ammonium persulfate （APS）, sodium dodecyl sulfate （SDS） and n-pentanol were used as the initiator, surfactant and cosurfactant, respectively. The polymeriza- tion mechanism of the core-shell latex particles is discussed. The encapsulation of nano-CaCO3 by PMMA was confirmed using a transmission electron microscope （TEM）. The grafting percentage of the core-shell particles was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis （TGA）. The nano-CaCO3/PMMA core-shell par- ticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）. The FTIR results revealed the existence of a strong interaction at the interface of the nano-CaCO3 particle and the PMMA, which implies that the polymer chains were successfully grafted onto the surface of the nano-CaCO3 particles through the link of the coupling agent, In addition, the TGA and DSC results indicated an enhancement of the thermal stability of the core-shell materials compared with that of the pure nano-PMMA, The nano-CaCO3/PMMA particles were blended into a polypropylene （PP） matrix by melt processing. It can also be observed using scanning electron microscopy （SEM） that the PMMA chains grafted onto the CaCO3 nanoparticles interfere with the aggregation of CaCO3 in the polymer matrix （PP matrix） and thus improve the compatibility of the CaCO3 nanoparticles with the PP matrix.

This paper reports the state of art in a variety of pressure and the detailed study of various matrix based pressure sensors. The performances of the bridges, buildings, etc. are threatened by earthquakes, material degradations, and other environmental effects. Structural health monitoring （SHM） is crucial to protect the people and also for assets planning. This study is a contribution in developing the knowledge about self-sensing smart materials and structures for the construction industry. It deals with the study of self-sensing as well as mechanical and electrical properties of different matrices based on pressure sensors. The relationships among the compression, tensile strain, and crack length with electrical resistance change are also reviewed.

Advanced microemulsion synthesis and characterization of wollastonite （CaSiO3）fpolystyrene one-dimensional nanorods with core-shell structures

In this work, one-dimensional core-shell nanorods （CSNRs; 185-250nm wide and 1-1.5μm long） consisting of triethoxyvinylsilane-modified wollastonite （CaSiO3） nanorods （MWNRs） as a core and polystyrene as a shell with uniform size were successfully synthesized using an advanced microemulsion technique. The effect of varying the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide （producing CSNRSCTAB） or sodium dodecyl sulphate （producing CSNRSSDS） upon the size and morphology of the CSNRs was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy （FE-SEM）. X-ray diffractometry and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer revealed the existence of a strong interaction between the MWNRs and polystyrene, which implies that the polymer chains were successfully grafted onto the surface of the MWNRs. The CSNRs were blended with polypropylene by melt processing, and the effect of the CSNRs upon the morphological properties of the polypropylene matrix was investigated by FE-SEM and atomic force microscopy. It was observed that the polystyrene chains that grafted onto the CaSiO3 nanorods interfered with the aggregation of CaSiO3 nanorods in the polypropylene matrix and thus improved the compatibility of the CaSiO3 nanorods with the polypropylene matrix. Furthermore, the compatibility of CaSiO3 nanorods with polypropylene of CSNRsDs/polypropylene was superior to that of CSNRCTAB/polypropylene.

Rib stability: A way forward for safe coal extraction in India

Ensuring rib stability during pillar extraction is of prime importance in bord and pillar(B&P) method of underground coal mining with caving. Rib stability has been assessed here by way of assessing factor of safety(FOS), a ratio of the strength of rib to stress on it. Earlier formulations for rib stability when applied to case studies gave very low FOS value suggesting significant ground control problems, which were contrary to the field observations. This has necessitated the need to revisit the concept of rib stability. The stress coming on the rib is estimated with the use of numerical modeling technique using the FLAC^(3D) software. The methodology of assessing rib-stability with the help of suggested rib-strength formulation has been validated at eight Indian coal mines. The outcome of this study finds relevance and importance in ensuring underground coal liquidation with improved safety and conservation.

Effect of age on reproductive attributes of an aphidophagous ladybird, Cheilomenes sexmaculata

The effect of both male and female age was investigated on certain reproductive attributes, viz. mating incidence, mating duration, fecundity, percent egg viability, ratio of reproductive and non-reproductive periods and reproductive rate, of an aphidophagous ladybird, Cheilomenes sexmaculata （Fabricius）. Females started mating at the age of 8 hours post-emergence （PE） and males at the age of 2 days PE. Mating in the laboratory was a maledominated phenomenon. The mating duration and reproductive rate of 10-day-old females when mated with males of varying ages increased up to the male age of 60 days, and thereafter decreased, whereas, fecundity, egg viability and ratio of reproductive and non-reproductive periods increased up to the male age of 50 days, and thereafter declined. However, when females of varying ages were mated with 10-day-old males, fecundity and reproductive rate increased up to 40 days of female age, respectively, then decreased. The ratio of reproductive and non-reproductive periods increased with increasing age of females. Mating age for optimal reproductive output was 10-50-day-old males and NE to 40-day-old females. Reproductive cessation in males was recorded after 50 days PE, whereas in females at the age of 40 days PE. Higher mating durations lead to elevated reproductive rates. Delay in the reproductive phase was positively correlated with longevity. The results of this study may aid mass multiplication of this ladybird by identifying and promoting usage of adults of optimal age, Our results also enhance our understanding of the effect of age on reproductive attributes in ladybirds.
