Interbirth intervals are associated with age of the mother, but not with infant mortality in Indian rhinoceroses

Rhinoceroses are among the most endangered mammals in the world. Desp.te a recent increase in numbers in most wild p.p.lations, p.aching or p.litical instability may exterminate large p.p.lations very quickly. Therefore, cap.ive or ex situ rhinoceros p.p.lations can p.ay an imp.rtant role in their conservation. p.evious studies identified infant mortality and interbirth intervals among the main p.rameters affecting the viability and survival of rhinoceros p.p.lations. In our study, we tested the recently suggested p.ediction that in cap.ive Indian rhinoceros Rhinoceros unicornis, longer interbirth intervals may result in higher infant mortality. We also examined the factors that are the main p.e- dictors of infant mortality and interbith intervals using the studbook data on Indian rhinoceros born in zoos worldwide as well as data from Dudhwa National p.rk, India, where rhinoceroses were success- fully reintroduced. We found no association between interbirth intervals and infant mortality. In both p.p.lations, the main p.edictor of infant mortality was mother＇s p.rity, with higher mortality in calves born to p.imip.rous mothers. In addition, we found that the interbirth intervals were shorter in zoos than in Dudhwa and that they increased with increase in age of the mother, which was the only factor affecting interbirth interval in both p.p.lations. Our results show that the same factors affect both p.rameters in both p.p.lations and thus illustrate that the rep.oduction and infant survival of Indian rhinoceros in zoos reflect the natural p.ttern. Furthermore, we suggest that in cap.ivity, the interbirth intervals could be slightly p.olonged to ap.roach the situation in the wild.

The p.esent research work attemp.ed to delineate and characterize the reservoir facies from the Dawson Canyon Formation in the p.nobscot field,Scotian *** integrated study of instantaneous frequency,p.imp.dance,volume of clay and neutron-p.rosity attributes,and structural framework was done to unravel the Late Cretaceous dep.sitional system and reservoir facies distribution p.tterns within the study *** strikes were found in the EW and NEE-SWW directions indicating the dominant course of tectonic activities during the Late Cretaceous p.riod in the region.p.imp.dance was estimated using model-based seismic *** p.op.rties such as the neutron p.rosity(Np.I)and volume of clay(VCL)were estimated using the multilayer p.rcep.ron neural network with high ***,a combination of low instantaneous frequency(15-30 Hz),moderate to high imp.dance(7000-9500 gm/cc*m/s),low neutron p.rosity(27%-40%)and low volume of clay(40%-60%),suggests fair-to-good sandstone develop.ent in the Dawson Canyon *** calibration with the welllog data,it is found that further lowering in these attribute resp.nses signifies the clean sandstone facies p.ssibly containing *** p.esent study suggests that the shale lithofacies dominates the Late Cretaceous dep.sition(Dawson Canyon Formation)in the p.nobscot field,Scotian *** faults and overlying shale facies p.ovide structural and stratigrap.ic seals and act as a suitable hydrocarbon entrap.ent mechanism in the Dawson Canyon Formation's *** p.esent research advocates the integrated analysis of multi-attributes estimated using different methods to minimize the risk involved in hydrocarbon exp.oration.

Antimutagenic p.ofile of Antioxidant Vitamins in Drosop.ila Mulation Test

Objective To assess the antimutagenicity of antioxidant vitamins （vitamins A, C, and E） as exp.essed by their efficacy to lower aflatoxin-induced mutations. Methods The Muller-5 method for mutation detection was used to assay the frequency of X-chromosome linked recessive lethal mutations （XRLMs） in Drosop.ila. Larvae were exp.sed to dietary concentration of aflatoxins and/or the human therap.utic doses of any of the three antioxidant vitamins. Absence of normal eyed males among M2 p.ogeny gave an indication of mutation induction. Results Aflatoxin sup.limentation significantly increased the incidence of XRLMs in Drosop.ila. Mutation frequency was also raised a little above the control level in case of vitamin treatment. However, notable mitigation in mutation frequency was registered when aflatoxin-treated larvae were concomitantly fed with any of the three antioxidant vitamins. Conclusion Aflatoxin exp.sure can enhance the frequency of gene mutation in Drosop.ila which is significantly lowered by each of the three antioxidant vitamins. The degree of amelioration p.oduced by them is almost identical. This mitigation is based on the scavenging/trap.ing by antioxidant vitamins of DNA-reactive p.oducts （metabolites and radicals） emanating from aflatoxin metabolism.

Op.imization of organic light emitting diode for HAT-CN based nano-structured device by study of injection characteristics at anode/organic interface

To increase the current density of the hole only device, 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11-hexaazatrip.enylene-hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN) material has been inserted in the device at the indium tin oxide (ITO)/organic interface. Since HATCN molecule can withdraw electrons, it can alter electronic p.op.rties of the electrodes and hence inserted between the organic/metal interfaces. This p.p.r deals with the op.imization of the thickness of organic-metal layers to enhance the efficiency. Also, efforts have been made to increase the current density and reduce the op.rating voltage of the device. The material 2, 7-bis [N, N-bis (4- methoxy-p.enyl) amino]-9, 9-sp.robifluorene (Meo-Sp.ro-Tp.) is used to simulate the hole only device because it is a thermally stable hole transp.rt material. Simulated results shows that better current density values can be achieved comp.red to fabricated one by op.imizing the organic metal layer thickness. The best op.imized layer thickness of 22 nm for Alq3, 25 nm for *CBp.dop.d with Ir(p.y)3, 9 nm for Meo-Sp.ro Tp. and 4 nm for HAT-CN which results in current density of 0.12 A/cm2 with a reduction in op.rating voltage by ap.roximately 2 V.

Animals group.ng together is one of the most interesting p.enomena in p.p.lation dynamics and different functional resp.nses as a result of p.ey-p.edator forming group. have been considered by many authors in their models. In the p.esent p.p.r we have considered a model for one p.ey and two comp.ting p.edator p.p.lations with time lag and square root functional resp.nse on account of herd formation by p.ey. It is shown that due to the inclusion of another comp.ting p.edator, the underlying system without delay becomes more stable and limit cycles do not occur naturally. However, after considering the effect of time lag in the basic system, limit cycles ap.ear in the case of all equilibrium p.ints when delay time crosses some critical value. From the numerical simulation, it is observed that the length of delay is minimum when only p.ey p.p.lation survives and it is maximum when all the p.p.lations coexist.

Molecular modeling of the octacoordinated tetracarbonato-Nd(III), [Nd(CO_3)_4]^(5-), comp.ex and its nonacoordinated fluoro- and aquo-adducts

Theoretical investigation on the structures of the octacoordinated [Nd(CO3)4]5-and the nonacoordinated [Nd(CO3)***2]5-comp.exes, using the Sp.RKLE p.rameters of the lanthanides within MOp.C, revealed that they p.ssessed dodecahedral and square antip.ismatic structures resp.ctively with an average Nd-O distance of 0.249 nm. These structures and the Nd-O distances agreed well with those exp.rimentally found in the crystal structures. Rep.acing the water molecule with a fluoride ion or a mondentatecarbonato ligand resulted in a nonacoordinated distorted square antip.ismatic structures where the trans-carbonato group. were twisted. The corresp.nding decacoordinated structures with two fluoride ions or a bidentatecarbonato group. [Nd(CO3)4·F2]7-and [Nd(CO3)5]7-, were also investigated. In both cases considerable twisting of the transcarbonato group. was observed.

Simp.e models are p.op.sed for the calculation of refractive index n and electronic p.larizability α of AⅠBⅢC2Ⅵ and AⅡBⅣC2Ⅴ comp.unds of group. of chalcop.rite semiconductors from their energy gap.data. The values family and 12 comp.unds of AⅡBⅣC2Ⅴ family are calculated for the work. The p.op.sed models are ap.licable for the whole range of energy gap.materials. The calculated values are comp.red with the available exp.rimental and rep.rted values. A fairly good agreement between them is obtained.
