We experimentally demonstrate the focusing of visible light with ultra-thin,planar metasurfaces made of concentrically perforated,30-nm-thick gold films.The perforated nano-voids—Babinet-inverted(complementary)nano-antennas—create discrete phase shifts and form a desired wavefront of cross-polarized,scattered light.The signal-to-noise ratio in our complementary nano-antenna design is at least one order of magnitude higher than in previous metallic nano-antenna designs.We first study our proof-of-concept‘metalens’with extremely strong focusing ability:focusing at a distance of only 2.5 mm is achieved experimentally with a 4-mm-diameter lens for light at a wavelength of 676 nm.We then extend our work with one of these‘metalenses’and achieve a wavelength-controllable focal length.Optical characterization of the lens confirms that switching the incident wavelength from 676 to 476 nm changes the focal length from 7 to 10 mm,which opens up new opportunities for tuning and spatially separating light at different wavelengths within small,micrometer-scale areas.All the proposed designs can be embedded on-chip or at the end of an optical fiber.The designs also all work for two orthogonal,linear polarizations of incident light.

Aim:Therapeutic agents suppressing bone remodeling have been clinically approved to delay metastatic progression and skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastasis.However,therapeutic agents including zoledronic acid(ZA)are insufficient to regress established bone metastasis.Therefore,new treatment strategies are desired,and unraveling the status of cancer cells during bone metastatic progression will help develop therapeutic strategies.Methods:We developed a unique multiplexed reporter system for bioluminescent imaging(MRs-BLI)using three luciferase reporter genes.This system allows for the noninvasive and quantitative monitoring of tumor growth and activities of nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)and hypoxia-inducible factor(HIF),which are the key transcriptional factors in response to inflammation and hypoxia,respectively.PC-3/MRs-BLI,a human prostate cancer cell line that stably retains the MRs-BLI reporter genes,was applied to the caudal-artery injection model of bone metastasis to observe the status of cancer cells during bone metastasis development and ZA treatment(sults:MRs-BLI reveals key events during the bone metastasis development:NF-κB and HIF are activated in cancer cells after migration to the bone marrow and are transiently reduced,followed by rapid activation before proliferation begins.ZA treatment suppresses the growth of metastasized cancer cells by suppressing NF-κB and HIF activities that may be indirectly induced by osteoclast activation.Conclusion:By visualizing the NF-κB and HIF activities of PC-3/MRs-BLI in bone,MRs-BLI has enabled new discoveries regarding the regulation of bone metastases.Further analysis of the progression of bone metastases using MRs-BLI may provide important information for developing new therapeutic strategies.

Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)characterized by structural diversity,face-to-face stacking and open channels exhibit unique advantages as photothermal materials but have rarely been applied in solar-driven water evaporation due to complicated framework design,tedious synthesis,and low solar-to-vapor efficiency.Herein,we report a materials design strategy to produce efficient and robust photothermal COF by anchoring nonemissive radicals to the pore surface by a[2+2]cycloaddition–retroelectrocyclization reaction.

Field observations of debris-flow initiation processes on sediment deposits in a previous deep-seated landslide site

Although information regarding the initiation processes of debris flows is important for the development of mitigation measures,field data regarding these processes are scarce.We conducted field observations of debris-flow initiation processes in the upper Ichinosawa catchment of the Ohya landslide,central Japan.On 19 June 2012,our videocamera monitoring systems recorded the moment of debris-flow initiation on channel deposits(nine surges) and talus slopes(eight surges).The initiation mechanisms of these surges were classified into three types by analyzing the video images: erosion by the surface flow,movement of deposits as a mass,and upward development of the fluid area.The first type was associated with the progress of surface flow from the upper stream on unsaturated channel deposits.The second type was likely caused by an increase in the pore water pressure associated with the rising in the groundwater level in channel deposits;a continuous water supply from the upper stream by the surface flow might have induced this saturation.The third type was associated with changes in the downstream topography caused by erosion.The flow velocity of most surges was less than 3 m s^(-1) and they usually stopped within 100 m from the initiation point.surges with abundant pore fluid had a higher flow velocity(about 3- 5 m s^(-1)) and could travel for alonger duration.Our observations indicate that the surface flow plays an important role in the initiation of debris flows on channel deposits and talus slopes.

Construction of on-line supercritical fluid extraction with reverse phase liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of capsaicin

A novel on-line system composed of supercritical fluid extraction(sFE), dilution line and reverse phase liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry(RPLC/Ms) was constructed for on-line extraction and reverse phase separation of some fat-soluble components in foods. Three columns including a trap column,concentration column and analytical column were used for trapping the fat-soluble components, on-line enrichment and reverse phase separation, respectively. Capsaicinoids were on-line extracted by a CO_2 supercritical fluid, then concentrated and separated by using the C_(18) columns, finally detected by mass spectrometry(Ms). Capsaicin eluted at 10.1 min and limit of detection(LOD, s/N=3) for the standard solution is 0.55pg. The linearity was calculated with a value of coefficient of determination(R^2)≥0.998 in the range of 1.1–8.5 ng. Concentrations of capsaicin in the green, yellow, and red bell peppers were determined to be 60.33 ng/g, 31.79 ng/g, 35.38ng/g, respectively.

We report the discovery of an extremely metal-poor（EMP） giant,LAMOsT J110901.22＋075441.8, which exhibits a large excess of r-process elements with [Eu/Fe] ～＋1.16. The star is one of the newly discovered EMP stars identified from the LAMOsT low-resolution spectroscopic survey and a highresolution follow-up observation with the subaru Telescope. stellar parameters and elemental abundances have been determined from the subaru spectrum. Accurate abundances for a total of 23 elements including 11 neutron-capture elements from sr through Dy have been derived for LAMOsT J110901.22＋075441.8. The abundance pattern of LAMOsT J110901.22＋075441.8 in the range of C through Zn is in line with the ＂normal＂ population of EMP halo stars, except that it shows a notable underabundance in carbon. The heavy element abundance pattern of LAMOsT J110901.22＋075441.8 is in agreement with other well studied cool r-II metal-poor giants such as Cs 22892-052 and Cs 31082-001. The abundances of elements in the range from Ba through Dy match the scaled solar r-process pattern well.LAMOsT J110901.22＋075441.8 provides the first detailed measurements of neutroncapture elements among r-II stars at such low metallicity with [Fe/H]-3.4, and exhibits similar behavior as other r-II stars in the abundance ratio of Zr/Eu as well as sr/Eu and Ba/Eu.

Tobacco is an essential cash crop in Zimbabwe and a strategic livelihood option for hundreds of thousands of rural households. However, the crop is linked to negative environmental, economic, and social impacts. The existing studies on tobacco cultivation in Zimbabwe present contradictory findings on the determinants and impacts of adoption, leaving unanswered questions about the crop’s sustainability impact in the country. This article investigates the determinants of smallholder farmers’ decisions to grow tobacco and the associated impacts of adoption. Random and purposive sampling were used to select 273 household surveys, including tobacco and non-tobacco smallholder farmers, and 56 expert interviews to answer the research questions. We employed regression models alongside expert interviews and document analysis to identify the determinants influencing the decision-making process of smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe regarding tobacco cultivation. Additionally, our investigation aimed to elucidate the perceived impacts associated with the adoption of this agricultural practice. The regression analysis indicated that the farmer’s age, education level, farming experience, family size, household income, and perceived high farm profitability are significant drivers of tobacco adoption. We also discovered divergent and convergent perceptions of the critical impacts of tobacco cultivation. The study highlights the need for proactive multi-stakeholder collaboration and sustainable financial arrangements to address the negative impacts of tobacco production. As the primary stakeholder responsible for regulating and promoting agricultural activities, the Zimbabwean government should provide meaningful financial support, increase access to credit, and ensure better market facilities for alternative crops to reduce the over-dependence on tobacco.

Determination of aniline derivatives in water samples after preconcentration with oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes as solid-phase extraction disk

A sensitive and selective preconcentration method using solid-phase extraction （sPE） disk made from oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes （OMWCNTs）, has been developed for the determination of aniline derivatives, such as 2-nitroaniline （2-NA）, 4- nitroaniline （4-NA）, and 2,4-dichloroaniline （2,4-DCA） in water samples. Anilines were extracted onto OMWCNT disk and then determined by high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） with UV detector. several parameters on the recovery of the analytes were investigated. The experimental results showed that it was possible to obtain quantitative analysis when the solution pH was 8 using 200 mL of validation solution containing 2 ug of anilines and 10 mL of acetonitrile/ethanol （8/2, v/v） as an eluent. Relative standard deviations for five determinations were 7.5% （2-NA）, 6.5% （4-NA） and 3.8% （2,4-DCA） under optimum conditions. The linear range of calibration curves were 0.5 ng.mL 1 to 15 ng.mL-1 for each analyte with good correlation coefficients. The detection limits （3s/N） of 2-NA, 4-NA and 31 pg.mL -1 and 26 pg.mL-1 was successfully applied to 2,4-DCA were 30pg.mL -1, respectively. Our method the determination of aniline compounds in fiver water sample with high precision and accuracy.
