Aim:To study the mechanisms by which N-demethyl-clarithromycin(NDC)induces human cervical cancer HeLa cell apoptosis in ***:The viabilityof N-demethyl-clarithromycin-induced HeLa cells was measured by MTT *** cells with condensed nuclei were visualized by phase *** DNA fragmentation was assayed by agarose *** of mitochondrial transmembrane potential wasanalyzed by a FACScan ***-3,poly-(ADP-ribose)polymerase(PARP),caspase-activated DNase(ICAD),Bcl-2,Bax,p53,and SIRT1 proteinexpression and the release of cytochrome c were detected by Western blot ***:N-demethyl-clarithromycin,an anti-inflammatory substance,inhibitedHeLa cell growth in a dose-and time-dependent manner.N-demethyl-clarithro-mycin induced HeLa cell death through the apoptotic *** pan-caspaseinhibitor(z-VAD-fmk),caspase-3 inhibitor(z-DEVD-fmk)and the caspase-9 inhibi-tor(z-LEHD-fmk)partially enhanced cell viability induced by N-demethyl-clarithromycin,but the caspase-8 inhibitor(z-IETD-fmk)had almost no ***-3 was activated then followed by the degradation of caspase-3 substrates,the inhibitor of ICAD and PARE Simultaneously,mitochondrial transmembranepotential was markedly reduced and the release of cytochrome c in the cytosolwas increased.N-demethyl-clarithromycin upregulated the expression ratio ofmitochondrial Bax/Bcl-2,and significantly increased the expression of the *** also downregulated anti-apoptotic protein SIRT1 ***:N-demethyl-clarithromycin induced apoptosis in HeLa cells via themitochondrial pathway.

The central post is one of the critical components for the low aspect ratio tokamak, which endures not only a tremendous ohmic heating because it carries a rather high current, but also a large neutron heating and irradiation owing to the plasma operation. The DS copper alloy Glidcop AL-25[8] was chosen as the conductor material for its adequate mechanical properties and physics properties. The central post has a cylindrical structure with lots of cooling channels. The length of the central post for the next generation of nuclear fusion spherical tokamaks will be more than 10 m or 20 m. The structural stability is very crucial. When the applied load is larger than the structure critical buckling load, the device will lose its stability and collapse. In order to calculate the critical buckling load, a 1/6-segment finite element model was used and the force acting on the central post was simulated. The results showed that the vertical compressive stresses mainly affect the stability of the central post. The linear buckling analysis results with finite element method based on small deformation theory were given in this paper. The relation curves and functions for buckling factor, depending on the different lengths and the radius of the central post, the diameter of cooling channel and the maximum allowable current density, were also shown.

AIM: To summarize the empirical research on assessing quality of life (QOL) in patients with gastric carcinoma. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted in MedLine from 1966 to February 2004. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were identified. QOL was used as an outcome measure in virtually all identified studies, such as those examining the effects of gastric cancer and various medical or surgical treatments in the patients. QOL was assessed mainly with generic measures; the social dimensions of QOL were largely neglected. The lack of gastric cancer-specific QOL measures hampers QOL research up to now. The gastric cancer-specific EORTCQLQ-STO22 and the FACT-Ga are important additions to the arsenal of disease-specific QOL measures. In most of the studies, the label QOL is used for questionnaires, which only assess symptoms or performance status, or are physician-reported rather than patient-reported outcomes. CONCLUSION: QOL in patients with gastric cancer deserves more systematic studies, especially as one of the outcome measures in randomized clinical trials. Results of studies that include QOL in patients with gastric cancer should be applied in clinical care, which aims at improving QOL of these patients.

Numerical Modelling and Simulation of Chemical Reactions in a Nano-Pulse Discharged Bubble for Water Treatment

A zero-dimensional model to simulate a nano-pulse-discharged bubble in water was developed. The model consists of gas and liquid phases corresponding to the inside and outside of the bubble, respectively. The diffusions of chemical species from the gas to the liquid phase through the bubble interface was also investigated. The initial gas is Ar, but includes a little H20 and 02 in the bubble. The time evolution of the OH concentration in the liquid phase was mainly investigated as an important species for water treatment. It was shown that OH was generated in the bubble and then diffused into the liquid. With the application of a continuous nano-pulse discharge, more OH radicals were generated as the frequency increased at a low voltage for a given power consumption.

Rutile （TiO2） is heavily used in pigments mid colormlts, mid the most abundmlt source of rutile is ilmeinte. Upon oxidation of ilmeinte, mtile cml be formed wiffl modest energy consumption; furfflermore, after leaching, only a few byproducts are formed. Unfortunate- ly, one drawback is file necessarily long oxidative process of typically used mefflods. In fflis study, we show fflat a fluidized bed reactor cml be used to oxidize ilmeinte ore to rapidly form ruffle mid pseudobrookite （Fe2TiOs） phases. Ilmeinte was oxidized wiffl 5vo1% 02 in Ar at temperatures of 1173 K or 1223 K mid subsequently leached using a diluted H2SO4 solution to dissolve file pseudobrookite phase. The effects of acid concentration, temperature, mid cooling rate after oxidation were investigated. We show fflat file ilmeinte was rapidly oxidized to form rutile mid pseudobrookite phases at 1173 mid 1223 K in a 5vo1% O2/95vo1% Ar environment wifflin 40 min. The fmal maximum mtile yield was 84.2mo1% after leaching in （1 ＋ 1） H2SO4 solution at 393 K for 12 h.

Observation of Inception of Sheet Cavitation from Free Nuclei

Prediction of inception of sheet cavitation on solid walls has been recognized to be very difficult, since it is significantly affected by the boundary layer flow characteristics, the population of free nuclei, the nuclei held in the wall roughness, the amount of dissolved air in liquid and so on. It has not sufficiently been made clear how the inception is affected by the conditions of water qualities and background flow characteristics. In this study, high speed observation of inception of sheet cavity from free nuclei is conducted for a two-dimensional convergent-divergent nozzle flow, where the sheet cavity forms just downstream of the nozzle throat. The effects of the amount of dissolved air and the free stream velocity on the inception process of sheet cavitation is examined. In addition, the bubble nuclei density, which is well known to be important factor for cavitation inception, is passively controlled by the filter installed in the tunnel. From the observations, it is confirmed that the nuclei number density significantly affects the formation of sheet cavity rather than the other two parameters. In conditions with large nuclei number density, the sheet cavity does not form, and bubbly cavitation appears instead. In the case with small nuclei number density, the sheet cavity forms from a single flowing nucleus and develops streamwisely and spanwisely. In the conditions with medium nuclei number density, the sheet cavity also forms but is shorter/narrower streamwisely/spanwisely, due to interaction of other nuclei flowing near the formed sheet cavity.

Significant Deviations in the Configurations of Homologous Tandem Repeats in Prokaryotic Genomes

We explored the possibilities of whole-genome duplication （WGD） in prokaryotic species, where we performed statistical analyses of the configurations of the central angles between homologous tandem repeats （TRs） on the circular chromosomes. At first, we detected TRs on their chromosomes and identified equivalent tandem repeat pairs （ETRPs）; here, an ETRP is defined as a pair of tandem repeats sequentially similar to each other. Then we carried out statistical analyses of the central angle distributions of the detected ETRPs on each circular chromosome by way of comparisons between the detected distributions and those generated by null models. In the analyses, we estimated a P value by a simulation using the Kullback-Leibler divergence as a distance measure between two distributions. As a result, the central angle distributions for 8 out of the 203 prokaryotic species showed statistically significant deviations （P〈0.05）. In particular, we found out the characteristic feature of one round of WGD in Photorhabdus luminescens genome and that of two rounds of WGD in Escherichia coli K12.

Purpose–Level 3 automated driving,which has been defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers,may cause driver drowsiness or lack of situation awareness,which can make it difficult for the driver to recognize where he/she ***,the purpose of this study was to conduct an experimental study with a driving simulator to investigate whether automated driving affects the driver’s own localization compared to manual ***/methodology/approach–Seventeen drivers were divided into the automated operation group and manual operation *** in each group were instructed to travel along the expressway and proceed to the specified *** automated operation group was forced to select a course after receiving a Request to Intervene(RtI)from an automated driving ***–A driver who used the automated operation system tended to not take over the driving operation correctly when a lane change is immediately required after the ***/value–This is a fundamental research that examined how the automated driving operation affects the driver's own *** experimental results suggest that it is not enough to simply issue an RtI,and it is necessary to tell the driver what kind of circumstances he/she is in and what they should do next through the *** conclusion can be taken into consideration for engineers who design automatic driving vehicles.
