Risk factors for the development of colorectal carcinoma:A case control study from South India

AIM:To study the association of colorectal carcinoma(CRC) with diet,smoking,alcohol,physical activity,body mass index,family history and ***: All consecutive patients with CRC confirmed by histopathology diagnosis were included. Age(±5 years) and gender matched controls were selected among the patients admitted in surgery ward for various conditions without any co-existing malignancy. Food frequency questionnaire(FFQ) was developed and validated after pretesting by investigator trained in data col ection techniques. Cases and controls were interviewed ensuring privacy,in similar interview setting,with same duration of time for both cases and controls without any leading question. Biological variables like family history of CRC in first degree relatives,history of diabetes mellitus; behavioral factors like tobacco use both smoking and smokeless form,alcohol consumption and physical activity were recorded. Dietary details were recorded using a FFQ consisting 29 food items with seven categories. Analysis was done using appropriate statistical ***: Ninety-four histopathologically confirmed cases of CRC and equal number of age and gender matched controls treated over a period of two years were studied. Age distribution,mean age,male to female ratio,education level and socioeconomic status were similar in cases and controls. Intake of food items was categorized into tertile due to skewed distribution of subjects as per recommended cut off for consumption of food item. On univariate analysis red meat [OR=7.4(2.935-18.732)],egg [OR=5.1(2.26-11.36)],fish,fried food and oil consumption were found to be risk factors for CRC. On multivariate analysis red meat consumption of more than 2-3 times a month(OR=5.4; 95%CI:1.55-19.05) and egg consumption of more than 2-3 times a week(OR = 3.67; 95%CI:1.23-9.35) were found to be independent risk factors for the development of ***: Egg and red meat consumption found to be independent risk factors for C

cerebrovascular disease of genetic origin characterized by abnormally dilated capillaries and a wide spectrum of symptoms,including headaches,seizures,neurological deficits,and intracerebral *** unpredictable clinical course and the current lack of therapies make the identification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers an imperative research challenge.1 Herein,we provide evidence that galectin-3(Gal-3),a major tissue and circulating biomarker of oxidative stress and inflammation,is significantly up-regulated both in CCM patients and ***,wholetranscriptome sequencing,qRT-PCR,and Western blotting studies demonstrated a significant up-regulation of Gal-3 expression levels both in surgical CCM specimens and in blood samples of CCM patients.

In this paper, the problem of robust absolute stability of Lurie system with probabilistic time-varying delay and normbounded parametric uncertainty is considered. The time delay variation range is divided into two sub-intervals. By considering the probability distribution of the time-varying delay between the two sub-intervals and the knowledge of the delay variation range, a novel linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) based stability condition is derived by defining a Lyapunov Krasovskii functional. It is illustrated with the help of numerical examples that the derived stability criteria can lead to less conservative results as compared to the results obtained by the traditional method of using the delay variation range information only.

Effect of Frey's procedure on islet cell function in patients with chronic calcific pancreatitis

Background: Frey’s procedure involves both drainage and resection of the pancreas in subjects with chronic calcific pancreatitis(CCP). The procedure may affect the pancreatic endocrine function after surgery. The present study was to evaluate the effect of Frey’s procedure on both beta and alpha cell function in CCP ***: Thirty CCP patients who underwent Frey’s procedure were included. According to the glycemic status, patients were divided into the diabetes mellitus(DM), prediabetes, and normal glucose tolerance(NGT) groups. Islet cell function was assessed before and 3 months after ***: At baseline, there was a significant difference in beta cell function among the three groups [NGT group 1.71(1.64–2.07) vs prediabetes group1.50(0.83–1.61) vs DM group 0.33(0.12–0.55), P < 0.0001], but the insulin resistance was not different among them. Post glucose hyperglucagonemia representing alphacell dysfunction during oral glucose tolerance test was present in all of them, but showed no significant difference [NGT group 0.15(0.06–0.31) vs prediabetes group 0.32(0.05–0.70) vs DM group 0.07(0.02–0.18), P = 0.20]. Frey’s procedure did not change beta cell function and insulin resistance. However, alphacell dysfunction deteriorated after surgery [0.10(0.03–0.27) vs 0.33(0.09–0.68), P = 0.004].Conclusions: Although Frey’s procedure does not affect the beta cell function and insulin resistance in CCP patients, the alpha-cell dysfunction deteriorates after surgery.

Development and validation of multicentre study on novel Artificial Intelligence-based Cardiovascular Risk Score(AICVD)

Objective Cardiovascular diseases(CVD)are one of the most prevalent diseases in India amounting for nearly 30%of total deaths.A dearth of research on CVD risk scores in Indian population,limited performance of conventional risk scores and inability to reproduce the initial accuracies in randomised clinical trials has led to this study on large-scale patient *** objective is to develop an Artificial Intelligence-based Risk Score(AICVD)to predict CVD event(eg,acute myocardial infarction/acute coronary syndrome)in the next 10 years and compare the model with the Framingham Heart Risk Score(FHRS)and *** Our study included 31599 participants aged 18–91 years from 2009 to 2018 in six Apollo Hospitals in India.A multistep risk factors selection process using Spearman correlation coefficient and propensity score matching yielded 21 risk factors.A deep learning hazards model was built on risk factors to predict event occurrence(classification)and time to event(hazards model)using multilayered neural ***,the model was validated with independent retrospective cohorts of participants from India and the Netherlands and compared with FHRS and *** The deep learning hazards model had a good performance(area under the curve(AUC)0.853).Validation and comparative results showed AUCs between 0.84 and 0.92 with better positive likelihood ratio(AICVD−6.16 to FHRS−2.24 and QRisk3−1.16)and accuracy(AICVD−80.15%to FHRS 59.71%and QRisk351.57%).In the Netherlands cohort,AICVD also outperformed the Framingham Heart Risk Model(AUC−0.737 vs 0.707).Conclusions This study concludes that the novel AI-based CVD Risk Score has a higher predictive performance for cardiac events than conventional risk scores in Indian population.

Objective:To investigate the relation between fruit seeds,plants residuals and appendicitis. Methods:Among cases that underwent appendectomy,the appendicitis cases having fruit seeds and undigested plant residuals in their etiology were examined ***, histopathological features,age,sex,and parameters of morbidity and mortality were used. Results:Fruit seed was found in one case(0.05%) with presence of pus in appendix lumen, undigested plant residuals in 7 cases(0.35%).It was determined that there were appendix inflammation in 2 of the plant residuals cases,while there were obstruction and lymphoid hyperplasia in the appendix lumen of 5 *** mortality was ***:The ratio of acute appendicitis caused by plants is minimal among all appendectomised patients, but avoidence of eating undigested fruit seeds and chewing plants well may help to prevent appendicitis.

A New Algorithm of Self Organization in Wireless Sensor Network

Self organization is one of the most important characteristics in an Ad-hoc Sensor Network. Thousands of Sensors are deployed in a geographical area randomly without considering the location factor. After deployment, sensors are to self organize themselves to form a network of their own. How well the network is formed determines the life of the whole network as well as the quality of data transmission. Self organization based on clustering has proven to be very useful in this regard. Since hierarchical clustering reduces energy consumption by routing data from one node to another. In this paper, we discuss a new algorithm for self organization of sensors deployed in a geographical area. The algorithm forms clusters of sensors by ordering them using a unique triangulation method. This algorithm not only considers all sensors but also groups them so that their inherent clustering property is preserved.
