Discrepancies between clinical and autopsy findings in patients who had an acute stroke

Physiological and pathological role of local and immigrating colonic stem cells

The latest avenue of research is revealing the existence of and role for the colonic stem cells in the physiological renewal of the mucosa and in pathological circumstanc- es where they have both positive and negative effects. In the case of human colon, different levels of stem cell compartments exist. First, the crypt epithelial stem cells, which have a role in the normal crypt epithelial cell dynamics and in colorectal carcinogenesis. Close to the crypts, the second layer of stern cells can be found; the local subepithelial stem cell niche, including the pericryptic subepithelial myofibroblasts that regulate the epithelial cell differentiation and have a crucial role in cancer progression and chronic inflammation-related fibrosis. The third level of stem cell compartment is the immigrating bone-marrow-derived stem cells, which have an important role in wound healing after severe mucosal inflammation, but are also involved in cancer invasion. This paper focuses on stem cell biology in the context of physiological and pathological processes in the human colon.

Clinical significance of granuloma in Crohn's disease

AIM: Granuloma is considered the hallmark of microscopic diagnosis in Crohn's disease (CD), but granulomas can be detected in only 21-60% of CD patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of granulomas by multiple endoscopic biopsies in patients with CD and to examine whether group of patients with or without granuloma exhibit a different clinical course. METHODS: Fifty-six patients with newly diagnosed CD were included in the study. Jejunoscopy, enteroclysis and ileo-colonoscopy were performed in all patients. At least two biopsy specimens from each examined gastrointestinal segment were examined microscopically searching granuloma. The clinical course was followed in all patients, and extraintestinal manifestations as well as details of any immunosuppressive therapy and surgical intervention were noted. rESULTS: Granuloma was found in 44.6% of the cases (25 patients). Patients with granuloma had higher activity parameters at the time of the biopsies. Extraintestinal manifestations were observed and surgical interventions were performed more often in the granuloma group. The need of immunosuppressive therapy was significantly more frequent in the patients with granuloma. Granuloma formation is mote often seen in younger patients, and mainly in the severe, active penetrating disease. CONCLUSION: The significantly higher frequency of surgical interventions and immunosuppressive therapy suggests that granuloma formation is associated with a more severe disease course during the first years of CD.

red mud, the by-product of aluminum production, has been regarded as a problematic residue all over the world. Its storage involves risks as evidenced by the Ajka red mud spill,an accident in Hungary where the slurry broke free, flooding the surrounding areas. As an immediate remediation measure more than 5 cm thick red mud layer was removed from the flooded soil surface. The removed red mud and soil mixture（rMSM） was transferred into the reservoirs for storage. In this paper the application of rMSM is evaluated in a field study aiming at re-utilizing waste, decreasing cost of waste disposal and providing a value-added product. The purpose was to investigate the applicability of rMSM as surface layer component of landfill cover systems. The field study was carried out in two steps： in lysimeters and in field plots. The rMSM was mixed at ratios ranging between 0 and 50% w/w with low quality subsoil（LQS） originally used as surface layer of an interim landfill cover. The characteristics of the LQS ＋ rMSM mixtures compared to the subsoil（LQS） and the rMSM were determined by physical–chemical, biological and ecotoxicological methods. The addition of rMSM to the subsoil（LQS） at up to 20% did not result any ecotoxic effect, but it increased the water holding capacity. In addition, the microbial substrate utilization became about triple of subsoil（LQS） after 10 months. According to our results the rMSM mixed into subsoil（LQS） at20% w/w dose may be applied as surface layer of landfill cover systems.

In an industrial facility,many electrical consumers can affect the quality of ***,the freedom from interference sources of these devices and equipment can be crucial for quality and uninterrupted electricity *** welding equipment is also a possible source of *** electrical harmonic injections created by welding equipment into the electrical network can affect the operation of other consumers connected to the given distribution points and cause unjustified overheating and shutdowns of some network *** aim of the research is to analyse the current harmonic injection of welding equipment of different types and modes of operation connected to the internal distribution network of the industrial *** effectiveness of the active harmonic filter built into the welding equipment was also examined in the *** results showed that the built-in active harmonic filter of the DC045 laser welding equipment was ineffective because the total harmonic distortion(THD)was about three times the 8%allowed by IEEE 519−2022 *** current harmonic injection of MIG 320 and MM403 type welding equipment was more than five times the permissible value of 5%.The current harmonic distortion of the PLAS140 type plasma-jet cutter equipment was below the 5% value allowed in the standard,thus it complied with *** on the measurement results,it can be concluded that the use of protection against harmonics is also necessary for welding ***,proposals were made in the paper to reduce the effect of harmonics.

Serrated polyps have been an area of intense focus for gastroenterologists over the past several years. Contrary to what was thought before,a growing body of literature indicates that these polyps can be precursors of colorectal cancer(CrC).Most of these lesions, particularly those in the proximal colon,have so far been under-recognized and missed during colonoscopy,qualifying these lesions to be the main cause of interval *** is estimated that 10%-20%of CrCs evolve through this alternative,serrated pathway, with a distinct genetic and epigenetic *** DNA methylation plays a central role in the development of this CrC *** characteristic molecular background is reflected in a unique pathological and clinical manifestation different from cancers arising via the traditional *** this review we would like to highlight morphological,molecular and clinical features of this emerging pathway that are essential for gastroenterologists and may influence their everyday practice.
