Alleviative effects of cannabis flower on migraine and headache

Objective: Few studies to date have measured the real-time effects of consumption of common and commercially available cannabis products for the treatment of headache and migraine under naturalistic conditions. This study examines, for the first time, the effectiveness of using dried cannabis flower, the most widely used type of cannabis product in the United States, in actual time for treatment of headache-and migraine-related pain and the associations between different product characteristics and changes in symptom intensity following cannabis ***: Between 06/10/2016 and 02/12/2019, 699 people used the Releaf Application to record realtime details of their cannabis use, including product characteristics and symptom intensity levels prior to and following self-administration;data included 1910 session-level attempts to treat headache-(1328 sessions) or migraine-related pain(582 sessions). changes in headache-or migraine-related pain intensity were measured on a 0–10 scale prior to, and immediately, following cannabis ***: Ninety-four percent of users experienced symptom relief within a two-hour observation window. The average symptom intensity reduction was 3.3 points on a 0–10 scale(standard deviation = 2.28,cohen's d = 1.58), with males experiencing greater relief than females(P ce greater relief than older users(P = 0.08). Study of the Influence of Angiostatin Intravitreal Injection on Vascular Leakage in Retina and Iris of the Experimental Diabetic Rats

Purpose: To examine the effect of an intravitreal injection of angiostatin on vascular leakage in retina and iris of the diabetes and study its possible mechanism. Methods: Experimental diabetes was induced in 24 rats by an intravenous injection of streptozotocin (STZ) during 48 adult rats. Three groups were randomization distributed of them. There were 8 of both normal and diabetic rats in each group. STZ-diabetic rats and age-matched normal rats received an intravitreal injection of 5 μl of sterile PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) into the right eye, and the left eye was non-injected in the group A; Angiostatin was injected into the vitreous of the right eye (7.5 μg / 5 μl / eye), and the left eye received the same volume of sterile PBS as the control in the group B and c. The vascular permeability of retina and iris was measured using the Evans blue method at 2 days following the injection in the group A and B. Expression of VEGF in retina was evaluated using western blot analysis 24 hours following the injection in the group c. Results: Diabetic rats showed significant increases of vascular permeability in the retina ( P cted eyes showed significant decreases in vascular permeability in the retina ( P comparing with the PBS-injected eyes in STZ-diabetic rats. In contrast, intravitreal injection of the same dose of angiostatin into the age-matched normal rats did not result in any significant reduction in vascular permeability in the retina and iris, when compared with the contralateral eye with PBS injection ( P > 0.05). Angiostatin injection significantly reduced VEGF level in the retinas of STZ-diabetic rats but did not affect retinal VEGF level in normal rats. conclusions: Angiostatin significantly reduce pathological vascular permeability in the retina and iris of STZ-diabetic rats but not in normal rats. Sugarcane bagasse amendment mitigates nutrient leaching from a mineral soil under tropical conditions

Large quantities of organic by-products are generated by the sugarcane industry during sugar extraction *** by-products may be used as soil amendments to improve soil quality,as nutrient leaching is common in mineral soils of Florida in USA due to their sandy texture and frequent rain events.A soil column study was designed to evaluate the effects of bagasse application at 85 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse,170 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse,and 170 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse+nitrogen(N)on the leaching potential of carbon(c),N,phosphorus(P),and potassium(K).Bagasse was incorporated within the topsoil(0-15 cm)in outdoor soil columns exposed to natural conditions,with periodical irrigation during the *** approximately 57 weeks,the distributions of c,N,P,and K were evaluated at three soil depths(i.e.,0-15,15-30,and 30-53 cm)within the soil *** organic c(TOc),N,and P in leachates decreased significantly from the soils amended with bagasse compared with the control with no bagasse and no *** on K content changes in the columns,bagasse could also be utilized as a potential source of K for ***,application of bagasse as a soil amendment might be an effective way to sustainably reutilize organic by-products while reducing concerns regarding major nutrients entering groundwater *** results of this study could assist in developing nutrient management plans of using sugarcane bagasse as a potential soil amendment in mineral soils.

Incorporation of near-real-time hospital occupancy data to improve hospitalization forecast accuracy during the cOVID19 pandemic

Public health decision makers rely on hospitalization forecasts to inform cOVID-19 pandemic planning and resource *** forecasts are most relevant when they are accurate,made available quickly,and updated *** rapidly adapted an agent-based model(ABM)to provide weekly 30-day hospitalization forecasts(i.e.,demand for intensive care unit[IcU]beds and non-IcU beds)by state and region in North carolina for public health decision *** ABM was based on a synthetic population of North carolina residents and included movement of agents(i.e.,patients)among North carolina hospitals,nursing homes,and the *** assigned SARScoV-2 infection to agents using county-level compartmental models and determined agents’cOVID-19 severity and probability of hospitalization using synthetic population characteristics(e.g.,age,comorbidities).We generated weekly 30-day hospitalization forecasts during MayeDecember 2020 and evaluated the impact of major model updates on statewide forecast accuracy under a SARS-coV-2 effective reproduction number range of *** the 21 forecasts included in the assessment,the average mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)was 7.8%for non-IcU beds and 23.6%for IcU *** the major model updates,integration of near-real-time hospital occupancy data into the model had the largest impact on improving forecast accuracy,reducing the average MAPE for non-IcU beds from 6.6%to 3.9%and for IcU beds from 33.4%to 6.5%.Our results suggest that future pandemic hospitalization forecasting efforts should prioritize early inclusion of hospital occupancy data to maximize accuracy.

INTRODUcTION Over the past few decades,traumatic brain injuries(TBIs)have become one of the leading causes of death and the leading cause of injury-related death in the USA.[1,2]It is estimated that 1.70 million people are subject to TBIs each year.[2]Males are more likely to sustain TBIs(59%);the most common age groups are 0–5 years,15–19 years,and>65 years.[2]Approximately 1.36 million people present to the emergency department(ED),275,000 are admitted to the hospital,and 52,000 people die from TBIs.[2]The leading causes of TBIs are falling(35.2%),motor vehicle collisions(MVcs,17.3%),struck by/against an object(16.5%),and assault(10.0%).[2]These statistics combine to make TBIs the leading cause of injury-related death in the USA at 30.5%.[2]It has been estimated that,with specifi c guidelines from the Brain Trauma Foundation,up to 50.0%of the 52,000 TBIrelated deaths may be prevented.[3]

Long term follow-up of a family with GUcY2D dominant cone dystrophy

AIM: To describe long term follow-up in a family with GUcY2D dominant cone dystrophy. METHODS: Optical coherence tomography scans and fundus autofluorescence images were obtained. Flash and pattern electroretinograms(ERGs) and occipital pattern reversal visual evoked potentials were recorded. RESULTS: Two members of the same family(father and son) were identified to have the heterozygous R838 c mutation in the GUcY2D gene. The father presented at the age of 45 with bilateral bull’s eye maculopathy and temporal disc pallor. Over 13 y of serial follow up visits, the bull’s eye maculopathy progressed gradually into macular atrophy. Electrophysiological tests were significantly degraded suggesting poor macular function. Spectraldomain optical coherence tomography(SD-OcT) scans showed progressive loss and disruption of the ellipsoid layer at the foveal level. His son presented at the age of 16 with bilateral granular retinal pigment epithelial changes in both maculae. Electrophysiological testing was initially borderline normal but has gradually deteriorated to show reduced cone ERGs and macula function. SD-OcT demonstrated gradual macular thinning and atrophy bilaterally. Unlike his father, there was no disruption of the ellipsoid ***: Both family members exhibited gradual changes in their fundi, electrophysiological testing and multimodal imaging. changes were milder than those observed in other mutations of the same gene.

Histopathological characteristics and causes of kidney graft failure in the current era of immunosuppression

BAcKGROUND The histopathological findings on the failing kidney allograft in the modern era is not well studied. In this study, we present our experience working with kidney transplant recipients with graft failure within one year of the *** To report the histopathological characteristics of failed kidney allografts in the current era of immunosuppression based on the time after transplant, cause of the end-stage renal disease and induction immunosuppressive *** In a single-center observational study, we characterized the histopathological findings of allograft biopsies in kidney transplant recipients with graft failure within one year after the *** We identified 329 patients with graft failure that met the selection criteria between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2016. The three most common biopsy findings were interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy(IFTA, 53%), acute rejection (AR, 43%) and transplant glomerulopathy(TG, 33%). Similarly, the three most common causes of graft failure based on the primary diagnosis were AR(40%),TG(17%), and IFTA(13%). Most grafts failed within two years of post-transplant(36%). Subsequently, approximately 10%-15% of grafts failed every two years: >2-4 years(16%), > 4-6 years(13%), > 6-8 years(11%), > 8-10 years(9%) and > 10 years(16%). AR was the most common cause of graft failure in the first six years(48%), whereas TG was the most prevalent cause of graft failure after 6 years(32%) of *** In the current era of immunosuppression, AR is still the most common cause of early graft failure, while TG is the most prevalent cause of late graft failure.
