Effective stewardship of data is a critical precursor to making data FAIR.The goal of this paper is to bring an overview of current state of the art of data management and data stewardship planning solutions(DMP).We begin by arguing why data management is an important vehicle supporting adoption and implementation of the FAIR principles,we describe the background,context and historical development,as well as major driving forces,being research initiatives and funders.Then we provide an overview of the current leading DMP tools in the form of a table presenting the key characteristics.Next,we elaborate on emerging common standards for DMPs,especially the topic of machine-actionable DMPs.As sound DMP is not only a precursor of FAIR data stewardship,but also an integral part of it,we discuss its positioning in the emerging FAIR tools ecosystem.Capacity building and training activities are an important ingredient in the whole effort.Although not being the primary goal of this paper,we touch also the topic of research workforce support,as tools can be just as much effective as their users are competent to use them properly.We conclude by discussing the relations of DMP to FAIR principles,as there are other important connections than just being a precursor.

Predictors of dominance rank and agonistic interactions in captive Livingstone's fruit bats

Male dominance hierarchies have been studied in many animals but rarely in bats(Chiroptera).The dominance rank of social animals may dictate access to resources and mates;therefore,it has important implications for an individual's fitness and is crucial for successful captive man-agement.Between January and December 2018,at both Bristoi Zoo Gardens(Bristol,UK)and Jersey Zoo(Jersey,British Isles),we observed 19 male Livingstone's fruit bats Pteropus livingstonii using focal follows for 345 h overall,noting the outcome of all agonistic interactions.We recorded instigators of interactions,along with winners and losers,and analyzed these data using the R-package"EloRating"to create Elo-rating temporal plots of dominance ranks.We used generalized linear mixed models and multiple linear regression to analyze interaction data and test hypotheses regarding predictors of dominance rank,frequency of agonistic interaction,and choice of interaction partner.Age was positively correlated with dominance rank up to around year 9,when an asymptote was attained.Highly ranked bats instigated the most agonistic interac-tions,and largely directed these interactions at bats with much lower rankings than themselves.Hierarchies were extremely stable throughout the data collection period at both sites.We conclude that Livingstone's fruit bats have a stable linear dominance hierarchy,with high-ranking,typ-ically older males instigating the most interactions with lowest ranking males to secure dominance rank.This study adds to the limited discourse on Pteropus social behaviors,indicating that some bat species may have social systems similar in complexity to some nonhuman primates.

Despite advances in forecasting and emergency preparedness, weather related disasters continue to cost many lives, to displace populations and to cause wide-spread damage. Therefore, High Impact Weather Project (HIWeather), a 10-year research project (https://public.***.int/en/resources/buHetin/hiweather-10-yearresearch- project), was established in 2016 by WM0 (World Meteorology Organization) WWRP (World Weather Research Program: https://www.***.int/pages/prog/arep/wwrp/new/wwrp_new_en. html). HIWeather aimed at achieving dramatic improvements in the effectiveness of weather-related hazard warnings, following recent advancement in numerical weather prediction at km-scale and in disaster risk reduction. The implementation plan was developed under the concept of warning chain, which comprises all components and the connections between to a successful weather-hazards warning: observations, weather forecast, hazard forecast, impact forecast, the generation of warnings and decision making (Fig. 1). A successful warning relies on information produced by the meteorological and related physical sciences, thus its effectiveness of delivery depends on applications of social, behavioral and economic sciences. The workshop of WM0 High Impact Weather Project was held in Beijing during 20-22 November of 2018, attracted a diverse and interdisciplinary group of over 70 scientists from 25 countries in the broad field of physical and social science, during which all elements of the warning chain were discussed critically.

VETA:Visual eye-tracking analytics for the exploration of gaze patterns and behaviours

Eye tracking is growing in popularity for multiple application areas,yet analysing and exploring the large volume of complex data remains difficult for most users.We present a comprehensive eye tracking visual analytics system to enable the exploration and presentation of eye-tracking data across time and space in an efficient manner.The application allows the user to gain an overview of general patterns and perform deep visual analysis of local gaze exploration.The ability to link directly to the video of the underlying scene allows the visualisation insights to be verified on the fly.The system was motivated by the need to analyse eye-tracking data collected from an‘in the wild’study with energy network operators and has been further evaluated via interviews with 14 eye-tracking experts in multiple domains.Results suggest that,thanks to state-of-the-art visualisation techniques and by providing context with videos,our system could enable an improved analysis of eye-tracking data through interactive exploration,facilitating comparison between different participants or conditions,thus enhancing the presentation of complex data analysis to non-experts.This research paper provides four contributions:(1)analysis of a motivational use case demonstrating the need for rich visual-analytics workflow tools for eye-tracking data;(2)a highly dynamic system to visually explore and present complex eye-tracking data;(3)insights from our applied use case evaluation and interviews with experienced users demonstrating the potential for the system and visual analytics for the wider eye-tracking community.

Introduction Clostridioides difficile infection(CDI)is a common gastrointestinal illness worldwide,with increased prevalence and worse outcomes in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)[1].Fecal microbiota transplant(FMT)is an effective treatment for recurrent CDIs(RCDIs)with minimal serious adverse events(SAEs)reported[2].While immunosuppressive medications increase susceptibility to infections,studies have shown that FMT does not increase SAE risk in immunocompromised patients(including IBD patients on immunosuppressive therapy)[3].

Incorporation of near-real-time hospital occupancy data to improve hospitalization forecast accuracy during the COVID19 pandemic

Public health decision makers rely on hospitalization forecasts to inform COVID-19 pandemic planning and resource allocation.Hospitalization forecasts are most relevant when they are accurate,made available quickly,and updated frequently.We rapidly adapted an agent-based model(ABM)to provide weekly 30-day hospitalization forecasts(i.e.,demand for intensive care unit[ICU]beds and non-ICU beds)by state and region in North Carolina for public health decision makers.The ABM was based on a synthetic population of North Carolina residents and included movement of agents(i.e.,patients)among North Carolina hospitals,nursing homes,and the community.We assigned SARSCoV-2 infection to agents using county-level compartmental models and determined agents’COVID-19 severity and probability of hospitalization using synthetic population characteristics(e.g.,age,comorbidities).We generated weekly 30-day hospitalization forecasts during MayeDecember 2020 and evaluated the impact of major model updates on statewide forecast accuracy under a SARS-CoV-2 effective reproduction number range of 1.0e1.2.Of the 21 forecasts included in the assessment,the average mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)was 7.8%for non-ICU beds and 23.6%for ICU beds.Among the major model updates,integration of near-real-time hospital occupancy data into the model had the largest impact on improving forecast accuracy,reducing the average MAPE for non-ICU beds from 6.6%to 3.9%and for ICU beds from 33.4%to 6.5%.Our results suggest that future pandemic hospitalization forecasting efforts should prioritize early inclusion of hospital occupancy data to maximize accuracy.

Human dNK cell function is differentially regulated by extrinsic cellular engagement and intrinsic activating receptors in first and second trimester pregnancy

Decidual natural killer （dNK） cells express an array of activation receptors to regulate placental immunity and development during early pregnancy. We investigated the functional character of human dNK cells during the first and second trimester of gestation and the interaction between dNK and trophoblast cells. Although the frequency of CD56＋CD16-dNK among the total CD45＋ leukocytes did not change over this period, the expression of the activating receptors, NKp80 and NKG2D, was greatly upregulated. We observed a significantly higher number of extravillous trophoblast cells in proximity to the dNK cells in the first trimester in comparison with the second trimester decidua. NKG2D expression by first trimester dNK cells was decreased when co-cultured with the HTR-8 trophoblast cell line. In the second trimester, functional markers of dNK activation, i.e., angiogenic factor production （e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor, interleukin-8, interferon-gamma）, remained stable despite an increase in NKp80 or NKG2D surface expression. Furthermore, the degranulation capacity of dNK cells, as assessed by CD107a, was decreased in the second trimester. We suggest that in the first trimester, trophoblast-dNK interactions generate a population of dNK cells with a suppressed activating phenotype. In the second trimester, the loss of trophoblast-dNK interactions led to the inhibition of dNK cell function, although their activating receptor expression was increased. We speculate that during pregnancy, two mechanisms operate to modulate the dNK cell activation：suppression of activating receptor levels in the first trimester by trophoblasts and disengagement of receptor-ligand coupling in the second trimester.

Impact of postoperative intravenous fluid administration on complications following elective hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery

Background: The impact of perioperative intravenous fluid administration on surgical outcomes has been documented in literature, but not specifically studied in the context of hepato-pancreato-biliary(HPB) surgery. This study aimed to investigate the impact of postoperative intravenous fluid administration on intensive care unit(ICU), in this subgroup of patients. Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort of 241 HPB patients was assessed, focusing on intravenous fluid administration in ICU, during the first 24 h. Intravenous fluid variables were compared to hospital stay and postoperative complications. Data were assessed using Spearman's correlation test for bivariate correlations and logistic regression for multivariate analysis. Results: The median volume of intravenous fluid administered in the first 24 h postoperatively was 4380 mL, of which 2200 mL was crystalloid, 1500 mL colloid and 680 mL "other" fluid. Patients with one or more complications had a higher median total intravenous fluid input(4790 vs. 4300 mL), higher colloid volume(20 0 0 vs. 150 0 mL), lower urine output(1595 vs. 1900 mL) and greater overall fluid balance( + 3040 vs. + 2553 mL) than those without complications. There were correlations between total intravenous fluid volume administered( r = 0.278, P < 0.001), intravenous colloid input( r = 0.278, P < 0.001), urine output( r =-0.295, P < 0.001), positive fluid balance( r = 0.344, P < 0.001) and length of hospital stay. Logistic regression model was constructed to predict the occurrence of one or more complications; total intravenous fluid volume and overall fluid balance were both independent significant predictors(OR = 2.463, P = 0.007; OR = 1.001, P = 0.011; respectively). Conclusions: Administration of high volumes of intravenous fluids in the first 24 hours post-HPB surgery, along with higher positive fluid balance is associated with a higher rate of complications and longer hospital stay.
