Synthesis and Characterization of Gadolinium Oxide-Hematite Magnetic Ceramic Nanostructures

Mixed-oxide nanostructures of the type xGd2O3-(1-x)α-Fe2O3 (x=0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) were synthesized by mechanochemical activation for ball milling times of 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 hours. The systems were subsequently analyzed by Mӧssbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), magnetic measurements and optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The magnetic hyperfine field was studied as function of ball milling time for all sextets involved and found to be consistent with the formation of a limited solid solution in the systems investigated. The end-product was the gadolinium perovskite, represented by a doublet whose abundance was derived as function of the milling time. The XRPD patterns recorded for the equimolar composition were dominated by the diffraction peaks of GdFeO3 after 12 hours of milling. The hysteresis loops were recorded at 300 and 5 K in an applied magnetic field of 5 T and were interpreted as a superposition of paramagnetic behavior of gadolinium oxide and weak ferromagnetic behavior of hematite and gadolinium perovskite. The Morin transition of hematite was inferred from zero-field-cooling-field-cooling (ZFC-FC) curves measured with a magnetic field of 200 Oe in the 5-300 K temperature range and was found to depend on the ball milling time. Optical diffuse reflectance spectra showed that the compounds were semiconductors with an optical band gap of 2.1 eV.

The Encouraging Novel Amelogenesis Models and Ex vivo cell Lines （ENAMEL） Development workshop was held on 23 june 2017 at the Bethesda headquarters of the National institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research （NIDCR）. Discussion topics included model organisms, stem cells/cell lines, and tissues/3D cell culture/organoids. Scientists from a number of disciplines, representing institutions from across the United States, gathered to discuss advances in our understanding of enamel, as well as future directions for the field.

The production of in vitro meat by cell culture has been suggested by some scientists as one solution to address the major challenges facing our society. Firstly, consumers would like the meat industry to reduce potential discomfort of animals on modern farms, or even to avoid killing animals to eat them. Secondly, citizens would like meat producers to reduce potential environmental deterioration by livestock and finally, there is a need to reduce world hunger by increasing protein resources while the global population is predicted to grow rapidly. According to its promoters, artificial meat has a potential to make eating animals unnecessary, to reduce carbon footprint of meat production and to satisfy all the nutritional needs and desires of consumers and citizens. To check these assumptions, a total of 817 educated people（mainly scientists and students） were interviewed worldwide by internet in addition to 865 French educated people. We also interviewed 208 persons（mainly scientists） after an oral presentation regarding artificial meat. Results of the three surveys were similar, but differed between males and females. More than half of the respondents believed that ＂artificial meat＂ was feasible and realistic. However, there was no majority to think that artificial meat will be healthy and tasty, except respondents who were in favour of artificial meat. A large majority of the respondents believed that the meat industry is facing important problems related to the protection of the environment, animal welfare or inefficient meat production to feed humanity. However, respondents did not believe that artificial meat will be the solution to solve the mentioned problems with the meat industry, especially respondents who were against artificial meat. The vast majority of consumers wished to continue to eat meat even they would accept to consume less meat in a context of increasing food needs. Only a minority of respondents（from 5 to 11%） would recommend or accept to eat

The uplift history of south-eastern Tibet is crucial to understanding processes driving the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas. Underpinning existing palaeoaltimetric studies has been regional mapping based in large part on biostratigraphy that assumes a Neogene modernization of the highly diverse, but threatened, Asian biota. Here, with new radiometric dating and newly collected plant-fossil archives, we quantify the surface height of part of the south-eastern margin of Tibet in the latest Eocene(～34 Ma) to be ～3 km and rising, possibly attaining its present elevation(3.9 km) in the early Oligocene. We also find that the Eocene–Oligocene transition in south-eastern Tibet witnessed leaf-size diminution and a floral composition change from sub-tropical/warm temperate to cool temperate, likely reflective of both uplift and secular climate change, and that, by the latest Eocene, floral modernization on Tibet had already taken place, implying modernization was deeply rooted in the Palaeogene.

Patient, Provider and System Factors Impacting on the Diagnosis and Management of Lung Cancer Care in Australia

Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia, with only modest improvements in survival. This study aims to identify factors impacting on diagnosis and management of lung cancer with particular reference to Australian primary care. Methods: A sequential mixed method modified approach employing interview and a two-phased survey technique. Following telephonic interviews with 31 health professionals (individuals representing general practitioners, specialized physicians, nurses and allied health practitioners), interview data was analysed using qualitative thematic analysis, and surveys using descriptive statistics. Emergent themes were organised under patient, provider and system factors. Interviews ceased upon saturation of data. Results: Multiple patient, provider and systems issues were seen to contribute to adverse health outcomes. There is a strong relationship between smoking and outcomes, and factors related to higher smoking rates such as a lower socioeconomic status. For smokers, guilt and/or denial was considered a reason for delay in the decision to seek medical care for cough or shortness of breath. Aboriginal people under-report morbidity related to smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;other patients fail to recognise the significance of their symptoms. Discussion: Despite the poor prognosis of lung cancer diagnosis, increased awareness of presentation and treatment options can address disparities in health outcomes.
