3D Fluorescence Characterization of Synthetic Organic Dyes—Effect of pH

The fingerprint character and high sensitivity of 3D UV-vis fluorescence spectra offer special advantages for identification of dyes in a museum or forensic setting. However, the extraction process is likely to affect the pH of the medium and, in some cases, may alter the dye itself. We report a study of 65 dyes extracted from wool fibers that are part of the Schweppe Collection of Important Synthetic Dyes. The 3D fluorescence spectra of the dye extracts at pH 1 and pH 14 are compared with the same dyes from the Schweppe solution library, run under the same conditions, as well as with the 3D fluorescence spectra of the dyes taken directly from the solution library without pH control. This analysis leads to guidelines for the use of such spectra in identifying unknown dye samples.

Perioperative Dental Injuries: A Retrospective Analysis of Documented Injuries at Penn State Hershey Medical Center

Background: Dental injury is the most common cause of malpractice claims against anesthesiologists in the United States. This study analyzed the incidence, risk factors, and consequences of dental injury directly attributed to anesthetic care at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Methods: Data was collected from retrospective chart review of available dental injury records, incident reports, and filed dental claims from january 2008 to june 2014. Results: Forty seven dental injuries were documented amongst 247,323 general anesthetics representing an overall incidence of 0.019%. Seventy percent of injuries occurred in patients with documented pre-existing prosthodontics or poor dentition and largely involved maxillary teeth (68%). Dental fracture (40%) and avulsion (40%) were the most common types of injury. Direct laryngoscopy was used in 60% of cases reporting dental injury;more than one attempt at securing the airway was required in 36% of cases. Total costs related to the injuries were $24347.65. Conclusions: Dental injury is often attributed to the actions of the anesthesiologist. The injury may be unnoticed until after surgery, what makes it difficult to identify the time and mechanism of injury. Our results suggest that the number of attempts at securing an airway is a risk factor for dental injury. Proper preoperative documentation of poor dentition, discussion with the patient about the increased risk of dental injury and detailed documentation of dental injury when it occurs is advised.

Adsorptive separation of light hydrocarbons by porous solids provides an energy-efficient alternative to state-of-the-art cryogenic ***,an optimal balance between the cost,performance and stability of the sorbent material is yet to be achieved for industrial ***,we report the efficient separation of C2 and C3 hydrocarbons by a faujasite zeolite(Na-X,Si/Al=1.23).A tandem configuration of two fixed-beds packed with Na-X affords complete dynamic separation of the ternary mixture of C_(2)H_(2)/C_(2)H_(4)/C_(2)H_(6)(1/49.5/49.5;v/v/v)under ambient ***-swing desorption on the latter fixed-bed gives ethylene(>99.50%,1.80 mmol g^(-1))and ethane(>99.99%,1.41 mmol g^(-1)).In situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction revealed the binding sites for C_(2)H_(2)and C_(2)H_(4)in *** study highlights the potential application of commercial zeolites for challenging industrial separations.

Understanding the factors that facilitate the emergence of cooperation among organisms is central to the study of social evolution. Spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta frequently cooperate to mob lions Panthera leo, approaching the lions as a tightknit group while vocalizing loudly in an attempt to overwhelm them and drive them away. Whereas cooperative mobbing behavior has been well documented in birds and some mammals, to our knowledge it has never been described during interactions between 2 apex predators. Using a 27-year dataset, we characterize lion-hyena encoun- ters, assess rates of mobbing behavior observed during these interactions, and inquire whether mobbing results in successful acquisition of food. Lions and hyenas interacted most often at fresh kills, especially as prey size and the number of hyenas present increased. Possession of food at the beginning of an interaction positively affected retention of that food by each predator species. The presence of male lions increased the probability of an interspecific interaction but decreased the likelihood of hyenas obtaining or retaining possession of the food. Hyena mobbing rates were highest at fresh kills, but lower when adult male lions were present. The occurrence of mobbing was predicted by an increase in the number of hyenas present. Whether or not mobbing resulted in acquisition of food from lions was predicted by an increase in the number of mobs formed by the hyenas present, suggesting that cooperation among hyenas enhances their fitness.

Neck dissection does not add to morbidity or mortality of laryngectomy

Objectives:To examine the national rates of complications,readmission,reoperation,death and length of hospital stay after *** explore the risks of neck dissection with laryngectomy using ***:The American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Program(ACS-NSQIP)database was reviewed *** database was analyzed for patients undergoing laryngectomy with and without neck ***,perioperative complication,reoperation,readmission,and death variables were ***:754 patients who underwent total laryngectomy during this time were *** analysis showed average age was 63 years old,566(75.1%)were white,and 598(79.3%)were *** these patients,520(69.0%)included a neck dissection while 234(31.0%)did *** comparing patients who received a neck dissection to those who did not,there were no significant differences in median length of hospital stay(12.5 days w/vs.13.3 days w/o,P=0.99),rates of complication(40%w/vs.35%w/o,P=0.23),reoperation(13.5%w/vs.14%w/o,P=0.81),readmission(14%w/vs.18%w/o,P=0.27),and death(1.3%w/vs.1.3%w/o,P>0.99).Furthermore,neck dissection did not increase the risk of complication(P=0.23),readmission(P=0.27),reoperation(P=0.81),death(P=0.94),or lengthened hospital stay(P=0.38).Conclusions:Concurrent neck dissection does not increase postoperative morbidity or mortality in patients undergoing total *** results may help physicians make decisions regarding concurrent neck dissection with total laryngectomy.

有机酸积累和毒害是稻田秸秆还田中受到广泛关注的问题。本文以水稻与小麦秸秆为材料,采用淹水培养研究了甲酸、乙酸、丙酸及丁酸在土壤中的积累及其与秸秆碳氮比、氮肥添加量的关系。结果表明,在不施用氮肥的情况下,随秸秆用量的增加,秸秆处理的有机酸积累均显著增多。与稻秸处理相比,麦秸处理的有机酸(尤其是丙酸)积累量显著较高,土壤溶液中NH4+浓度显著较低。加入尿素明显减少有机酸积累,促进CH4排放,但对CO2的排放无显著影响;氮素的影响在麦秸处理中表现的尤为明显。上述结果说明麦秸的高碳氮比增加了无机氮的生物固定,抑制有机酸向CH4转化,从而导致麦秸处理有机酸积累量高于稻秸处理。施用氮肥是减少麦秸还田后有机酸积累的有效措施之一,但此措施将可能促进CH4的排放。
