The.ne.t e.vironme.t may limit the.ability of ne.t-bound birds to he.r sounds from the.outside.*** vocal le.rning spe.ie.,such as humans and songbirds,it is vital for young animals to he.r the.voice. of conspe.ific animals e.rly in *** songbirds,ne.t structure.varie. conside.ably across spe.ie.,and the.re.ulting impact on sound transmission may have.conse.ue.ce. for vocal le.rning in *** this study,we.te.te. the.hypothe.is that the.ne.t e.vironme.t atte.uate. song of Savannah Sparrows(Passe.culus sandwiche.sis),grassland songbirds that build ne.ts on the.ground unde. cove. of de.se.*** re.orde. live.Savannah Sparrows singing at variable.distance. from 21 *** re.orde. songs using one.microphone.inside.the.ne.t(the.typical position of a ne.tling)and anothe. place. 1 m dire.tly above.the.ne.t(a typical position of an adult).We.found a substantial re.uction in signal-to-noise.ratio,whe.e.songs re.orde. inside.the.ne.t we.e.an ave.age.of 11 dB lowe. than songs re.orde. dire.tly above.the.*** e.timate.that the.atte.uation impose. by the.ne.t re.uce. the.maximum acoustic e.vironme.t from 117.7 m(for re.ordings above.the.ne.t),to 78.6 m(for re.ordings within the.ne.t),which is analogous to liste.ing from a position 39.1 m farthe. away from the.*** re.e.rch e.timate. that song transmits up to 100 m in this spe.ie.,so any adult male.within 100 m of a young bird was pre.iously conside.e. a pote.tial vocal *** re.ucing the.ne.tling acoustic e.vironme.t from 100 m to 78.6 m,the.numbe. of male.tutors available.to ne.tlings is re.uce. by an ave.age.of 27%.Give. the.growing e.ide.ce.that song le.rning be.ins ve.y e.rly in life.future.re.e.rch on vocal de.e.opme.t should account for how the.structural prope.tie. of the.natal e.vironme.t affe.t the.songs that ne.tlings he.r.
